Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

1. I live in Oklahoma so there is alot of tornadic activity. Thankfully I have very smart pets. My cats and my dog already run into the bathroom and jump inside the tub whenever the sirens go off, even on saturdays when it's just a test. And being so severe weather prone, i've already made ready everything i'd need to grab. Got a first aid kit, water and snack bars that sit in a small box by the bathroom. I've always made a point to keep things close to the door, so I can grab them when I need to so first comes my grandmother's ashes, my photo albums, laptop and then my dolls. I usually have at least five minutes to grab everything and it only takes a second to do so, so I'm pretty set. However, if they were in another room and it was close, i'd have to leave them or toss them under my mattress for the duration. It's good to be prepared.

2. If I knew it was coming and had warning, then I wouldn't leave them behind even if you paid me. Pets and dolls are the two things I can't replace that I own. Sure I have lots of special books and figures and things that I've gotten but my pets and my dolls are the most important to me. Then my laptop, if I had time/room.

If it was a sudden thing, like a tornado, I'd try and grab them. Weather or not I could carry an MSD, two 1/6th dolls, and my cat carried filled with my two cats, is a whole 'nother question. But I would try.

3. Oh man, I've thought of this before!! D:

I mean.... I have a little dog now, so it's hard to say that I'd grab just one and run.

I don't even like thinking about it. @_@

But if I had time to act on it, like a warning with time to evacuate, I would. In case of fire.... I really should grab my AS Cinderella. She was my first resin baby. :(

4. I'd try to, I really would.
However, I have to make sure everyone else (My family and my dog) are safe.
I'll try to keep them close to me though.
I'd be sad to lose my dolls, but I'd be DEVASTATED if I lost a family member/pet.

5. This is such an interesting thread! I also have never even thought about this before...
I'm actually going to assume my family members could all escape on their own two feet without help, or assume it's just me in the disaster...(cuz obviously family first)
If so then would I save my dolls?
I don't like taking my dolls out unless they are clothed and not nude... I think personally I would grab whatever precious thing is out in the open and catches my eye. So if my doll was fully clothed and out in the open, I would definitely save him/her.

...could you just imagine me in a house fire (god forbid!) trying to clothe my dolls before running outside with them? HAHA

No doubt my mom would be running out with her giant pricey Soom Sabik...

6. Well, first things I'm worried about are my cats and dogs. They'd have to be ok.

If I had time after that, I'd be getting my purse (with all my identification stuff and some cash in it) and laptop for my important files....

If I really, really had time... then I'd grab my hard copies of my rps (because I have about ten year's worth in a 4 inch binder) and my doll.... and my ren fair garb...

7. This says it all for me.

Even in terms of objects, if there were a disaster and I had the chance to save just a couple of items, I think family heirlooms would have to come first - a doll I could (potentially) find again, something that belonged to a great-grandparent I would never be able to replace.

8. Personally I would worry about the living before I worried about the nonliving. I'd help my family or roommate if they were somehow impeded by anything (like a fire), and then worry about the animals like my lovebird and rabbit. Now if it were a disaster like a hurricane where I'd conceivably have more time to pack, I'd pretty much grab anything dear to me and find a way to make it fit with the essentials.

9. we had a bunch of tornados in a row a few weeks ago, the fist tornado that came just me and my younger brother were home with my granny
the first thing i did was i gathered my live-stock (dogs and cats) into the basement, unfortunately the kitties were uncooperative and went back upstairs. ug. so i left the animal and grandma harvesting up to my brother.
then i just went and quicly threw my dolls into sturdy boxes, as quite a few arnt mine and it would reaallllyyy suck if they got lost or damaged and i had to replace them for other people D:
and then my brother got mad at me for trying to save my (and other peoples) dolls over lives. but hey, if i was doing the life-saving, he woulda just sat around doing nothing. its called team-work... i cant do everything : /
the tornados never touched ground anyways... *shrugs*

10. I'd get the living out first, then the laptop, and my doll. Most everything else can be replaced (clothes, appliances, figures), or is too big to get out (my favorite chair, my pinball and arcade stuff). Fortunately I live in Maine though, not much disaster to be had.

11. Well, living in Oklahoma, all the necessities are always close to shelter - ie: laptop, important documents, etc. And of course the fleshy parts have their safety insured first, but my children are well trained. When they have to hide in the tub, each are with their own doll, so mine in there with us is not out of the ordinary. >.<

12. If I had time to think and plan, I'd probably take two or three favorites. If I was put on the spot, they'd probably be the last thing on my mind.

13. Grab whichever human children are closest (loads of kids in my family ಠ_ಠ too many brothers and sisters to keep count of, but fortunately most of them are old enough to get out on their own so I'd only be really worried about the little ones)
Throw my rat on my shoulder.
All the dolls in a bag.
I'm all set to go to into the basement, ma!

But if it was an IMMEDIATE emergency, I'd go for the kids... And leave the resin babies alone. As awful and sad a thought that is to me, it's true; they aren't living...
But that's realistically... My impulsive side says DOLLS OR NOTHING D:<
I'm seeing a lot of people saying they'd take their computers and game systems too... I don't really understand that, personally. We can get computers and games domestically, and there are loads of them exactly the same floating around. Dolls are special, unique, harder to obtain... I mean if your computer has really important stuff, your life's work and all that rot, sure... That's why I keep all my important files and programs on flashdrives that I keep on my person. But hey, to each his own.

14. I would try to get my dolls but as everyone before me has said lives first!

15. Honestly you guys, I don't think anyone was EVER suggesting letting someone die in order to rescue a doll. o_O;;; I mean it's good to confirm it ONCE: no, we'd all definitely like to save our family/roommates/pets first. It would seem to go without saying, even. But it's been mentioned more than once on every single one of 31 pages.
Does no one else here think it's weird that these threads ALWAYS go straight to death and rape and child abuse and everything? This is a doll forum.

16. *chuckles at what NK-chan said*
Honestly, because I don't have a doll yet, my dog would come first. She's my first baby, and I'd make sure she was safe. My mom would usually be up there in my priorities, but then it depends on the time of the day when disaster strikes. During the day, she'd be at work. In the evening, I'd make sure she was safe.
I live in the basement, so most disasters would probably start there. It honestly wouldn't be too much to sweep a few of my prized possessions into a duffelbag and scoop my potential dolls into my arms and dash either through my window, or up the stairs. Usually, when I'm awake, my dog is outside. My mom's cat is already an outdoor cat, so I wouldn't worry too much about her. The only other things I might grab would be some of my figures, a few of my games, and my PS2 if I can grab it quick enough. Having a fire extiguisher nearby would be a must, that way I might be able to rid myself of the danger if it's not too big. Otherwise, I'm out of there asap.

17. Something to think about if there is enough time to grab things OTHER than what is living...there are collapsible laundry hampers that fold flat. If you keep one next to your dolls you could literally sweep all or most of them into that and pitch them out a window in seconds. Sure they might be a little damaged, but at least you would still HAVE them.

18. If I had the time, then yes I would. But myself, my family, and my pets come first. Then my purse/money/phone, laptop, and my baby blanket if I could. Then dolls. But we don't really have natural disasters where I live, so it's very, very likely that we'd be evacuating due to fire, and in that case? I'd be able to take very little.

19. My area had an unexpected (although minor) earthquake recently, and it's made me think about this issue. My priority goes to my family and my own safety as well as my two cats. If I had time I would secure my dolls in the house and leave them behind. Not enough room in my arms to carry around 10+ SD-sized dolls and they wouldn't help me survive.

20. I don't know guys. Used to be, if I needed to I could pack everything I needed in an evening and be ready to leave...But now that I own a house and have filled it full of stuff- I can't say the dolls would make it. I own A LOT of stuff. Like, I'm a totally STUFF person. I guess it would depend on what room I'm in as to what I would grab-If I happened to be in the craft room or the hallway-yah, dollies are comin. But if I'm in the computer room, I'm grabbing the electronics. If I'm in the bedroom, my antiques and OOAK sculptures. I'd be devastated at losing anything. Including my house (which I obviously can't take with me.)
