Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

    1. This is a very good thing for me to think about. I'm going away to college in August, and I'll be living on a campus that's on it's own island off the bay. So, the threat of hurricanes and the like will constantly be there. Luckily, I only have 2 dolls, so saving them and my laptop wouldn't be hard since those 3 can fit in one bag. I would then help my room mates to get out as well, and then we'd evacuate.

Of course, this is in the best case scenario. If there was an immediate danger, I would just run. Material things don't mean nearly as much to me as my life. If it was a fire, I might have enough mind to grab the laptop, but not much else.

EDIT: My brother had a good point. First in foremost, the things you need to SURVIVE the disaster are a must, and keep them ready. The next thing is to make a list of the things that you CANNOT REPLACE, like the living things and heirlooms and such, and from that list take the things that have the most meaning. That souvenir Mickey Mouse from the 5th time you went to Disney Land isn't NEARLY as important as a photo album full of ancient family photos.

    2. huh, i'm surprised at how many people said laptop first, and then dolls. (nothing wrong with that of course, i just didn't expect it)..

as for me, if i had any time at all to grab something, after my bird was safe...my dolls would be the very first things i would grab. as far as possessions, they mean the most to me. i don't have any family photos or heirlooms or anything like that. i care far more about my dolls than my cameras or my computer, etc...so yes. as long as my bird was out and safe, my dolls would be the next top priority to me.

    3. In an emergency I'd grab my laptop, my leeke mihael because I love him to pieces and my souldoll celina because she's limited. I'm assuming it's a fire and I have to grab and run, if I had time to prepare then all my dolls would come with me.

    4. I think there is a huge difference between the types of disaster.
For example - if you come home and find it's on fire, there's not much you can do.
But if you get a warning that hurricane or something is coming, you have a plenty of time to get all the precious, valuable and important things to safe place.

    5. Once I was certain my husband and pets were safe, then I'd start grabbing for my laptop and my dolls if I had time to think about it (and I might not even think about it. I've not been in that situation where I had to make a quick decision.)

      As a child I had a period where I was afraid of natural disasters, so sometimes I'd try to pack my stuff up and put it in a line to prioritize what stuff was the most important. XD;

    6. My family lives in a cultivated desert, so we get fires every year. We've received mandatory evacuation orders more than once... I'm starting to think about keeping a bag of old clothes under my bed for next time XD

But honestly, my two dolls are low on my list of priorities. In the past, the time the authorities gave us was just barely long enough to pull the essentials together -- even when we started packing an hour beforehand. Also, the dolls would take up valuable space in the car. If they were already packed and ready to go, I would take them, but as much as it pains me to admit it, I probably wouldn't D:

    7. everyone in my house hold is able bodied so their good, I'd grab my cat, and the dolls, camera, and my laptop&Tablet along with anything else I can't think of right now

    8. If I knew disaster was coming the dolls would be in the list of things to go. In particular since my first doll was an engagement gift from my fiancee and would therefore hold a very important place in my heart. The others would be very important as well, for the characters they represent and the time and care invested in them.

If there is no time, a fire, ect. Then I would grab my cats. There was a fire in the building where I live and I grabbed my kitties and was out the door in moments. We have a plan for emergencies for the cats but I am afraid they would take president over the dolls. As horrible as it is to say, the dolls are not limited edition sculpts and can be replaced. The fluffy things that rely on me for their lives can not. And they will always come first.

    9. If it was immediate danger, I would only worry about my dog and cat. But if it was something more like the fire in Boulder last summer, then I would grab the dolls along with the paintings, photos, computer and lockbox.

Truth is that many people in Boulder were at work when the fires started and could not get home to rescue even their pets. :atremblin If you have more than say $2,000 invested in bjd, you might think about insurance.

    10. It all depends on how much time I have. Humans and pets would be first followed by my computer/hard drive because I have loads of pics I don't want to lose. Pics of memories, family, etc. After I've done all of that, I'll get the dolls. If I can't get the dolls, at least I'll have pics of them/the hard drive. The only thing insurance can do is give you money in place of what you lost. That's all nice and everything but I have a habit of liking/collecting rare, out of print, limited time stuff that I wouldn't be able to find again.

    11. If family and pets were safe, then yes. But if it was a time where I needed to help them, then no. I can buy another doll, but I can't buy a life back.

    12. If it was an emergency, then no, forget the doll. Real people and pets first! However, if I had a few seconds to grab something, it would likely be my laptop.

If it were a situation in which I had time to prepare, then yeah, he'd come with me. I don't have so much I hold dear that there wouldn't be room for him.

    13. My priorities are family, pets, irreplaceable things, laptop and then my dolls.

I'd rather have the people and animals I care for than my dolls. Things like family heirlooms would come afterwards since it's not like I can go pick up that ring grandma's had for 85 years, right? My laptop because of all the photos etc I have stored on it - also things I can't replace. Dolls after that because while I'd hate to lose them, the other things are more important to me, and I can replace my dolls if I needed to.

    14. Thatd depend on the circumstances I guess. In any case, I'd make sure my family and pets were safe first. We have two birds, fish and a horse as well as cats and dogs, so I guess that'd be a hard thing to take care of. (We'd probably have to leave the fish... :'( sounds cruel I know but its hard to move a 300L tank in a hurry.)
After that was taken care of, certainly I'd grab the doll. He'd be under the house insurance by then and I could feasibly replace him. It'd go; laptop, important paperwork/documents/wallet, cellphone, then doll/sentimentally valued objects. If its a fire, I may not grab the doll at all, just the REALLY important stuff. We don't get tornadoes here, but we had a flood warning last week...however the flood would have to be the entire ocean to reach our house. In reality it'd just be a bushfire that we'd have to evacuate for and in that case, I'd definitely have the doll last on the list.

    15. Victoria Victrix made the best point I've seen, and one I've thought of myself.

I usually have everything in my room, and I have one of these folding hampers there, too.
In the case of a fire I'd be sweeping my dolls, laptop and pearls from my grandma into the hamper.. maybe my master design book too, since I run my business off it. Those are all my valuables, really. I'd be grabbing my snake above all else, but those cover it for materialistic things.

    16. first priority is my cat. no discussion.

second is my computer and external hdd with all my photos.

      third would be dolls, but probably only a few of them, since i have too many... ^^;;;

    17. hmmm, this thread really got me thinking. Of course, like everyone else has said so far, my cat is top priority on the 'to get out asap' list. then I think the next, much less important things on my list would be my portable hard drive since it has a lot of important files and all of my artwork documented on it. Then possibly my dolls, since after all they are the most expensive thing I own. Though honestly in an emergency I would be more concerned with grabbing anything with sentimental value that cannot be replaced, like things I inherited from family members that have passed away, than my dolls.

    18. In situations like this of course I have to prioritize what should be first and what should not even be on the list.Safety of family and myself will definitely come first in any situation. Then my money and identification card, anything which involves law >_>" I have more than 10 in my home right now so it's definitely impossible for me to grab every single one of them and run if the situation is so dangerous.
If the fire isn't big, then of course put it out first!! get every disaster off, that's the best way of everything.-_-;.....
I believe with money I can get another one again, even if it wouldn't be the same since this new kid does not share the same old memories like the rest of my boys did. That is if I am still alive. As long as my family are safe and myself.I can still earn and get back into the hobby again. However if my closest ones are gone, they will never be back again....
      That's the main point :X.............

    19. If I didn't have time to gather valuables together, then I would definitely leave them behind. Making sure both my family's lives and my own are safe is more important. Besides, if that did happen, after we get back on our feet, then I could always make new dolls. again. geez, these type of questions always reminds me how materialistic I am. XD lol. There would be SOOOO much stuff I would want to take with me in case of an emergency.

    20. When disaster struck recently, i was quite vamazed how fast one can pack umpteen tinies and two carrierbags of dolls.
