Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

    1. This is an interesting subject! Just the other day the fire alarm went off in my building. At the moment, I happened to be sitting with my boyfriend, my laptop, and a couple of the resin crew.

Anyway the first thing that went through my mind is, this is probably a false alarm, but as I don't want to end up dead we should probably evacuate. Second thing was, should I take my doll? and I can tell you, if i had not been 99.99% convinced it was a false alarm, I would have grabbed Minoru in a heart beat. He was sitting right next to me and is easily one of the most valuable (and hardest to replace) things I own. As it was, I decided to gamble on the 0.01% and just took my laptop which was already in my hands anyway and I would essentially be unemployed without as all of my work is done on that computer. Being unemployed after your apartment just burned down is not a great spot to be in. Anyway the two of us shuffled outside and were almost immediately greeted by our neighbor saying that they had accidentally hit the switch with their hose. So all was well, not dead, and didn't loose any of the resin crew. Yay!

It's probably worth mentioning that all that thinking about what I should bring with me happened in about three seconds, it's not like I was just doping about for five minutes, wondering what valuables to bring whilst the apartment was burning down around me.

Now if it were the type of emergency evacuation where you have a little time to pack, say even twenty minutes. I can tell you that the entire resin crew would be coming with me. All my "family heirlooms" and pictures etc are back home with my mom so the only thing really of value (both emotional AND monetary) in my house are the dolls. Pack your bags kids, we're goin' on a trip!

On another note, I'm am sort of lolling at all the posts who specify that their family and pets come before dolls, as if anyone would go straight for their doll and only think of their family as an afterthought. "Thank goodness my doll is safe! Wait, what? OMYGOSH MY FAMILIES STILL IN THERE!" I think people+pets>dolls kind of goes without saying. At least I hope so! :P

    2. I was just thinking about smoke damage. After a fire anything that can, absorbs the smell of the smoke. Doll clothes could be ruined even if it was not burnt. There are companies that come in and clean things up, but the smell of smoke will not come out of cloth unless you can bleach it.

I better follow my own advice and get insurance.

    3. At least one of them will have to come with me......

    4. I had a nightmare on just this subject a few weeks ago. I dreamt my house was on fire and was having a total panic about getting my pets to safety (my family could take care of themselves obviously because they weren't even in this dream!!!) then I went back and was trying to stuff my laptop and all my resin brats into a wheelie bag and climb out of the window. It was very stressful!

In reality, I think I would be so stressed I would just run

    5. I have dealt with this question just recently, actually. At the moment the town (and sadly surrounding towns) where I live is flooding. The lower part of the town, where the city is, is pretty well flooded and the worse flooded places have been evacuated.
As soon as I heard that there could be possible flooding, I made a mental check list of things that I have to take if we get evacuated. The list was: Cat food, Cat litter, Cat and dolls.

    6. I may sound very silly, as I do not live in a place that get's easily flooded or is cursed with hurricanes (I live in Germany) but I have a packed 'emergency case' at my home, where I pack all the things that are important for surviving and valuable to me. Of course these things are taken out of it very often, but I'm very strict with packing them back in right after I do not need them at the time.
      It's under my bed.
My dolls are not in, but the boxes stand right next to it. So yes, if I have this one minute to rush in my room, pack my dolls in the case and leave the house I would definitely take them with me.
Of course, loved ones always come first. Always.

    7. LOL exactly! who would not think about family first? XD

I´m lucky with my place where i live :) i live in the ground floor and the two things i´m carring with me all the time are my psp and my doll xD so... just run xD
but i think it can be more hard if you have more than 3 dolls xDDD

    8. To be honest- none of my dolls are LE (at this point). In a planned evacuation (hurricane, etc- unlikely in this area), they'd come if I had space, but in an emergency? They're not even in the top tier grouping, to be honest- they're insured (under renter's) with my other collectible items, and replaceable- they wouldn't be worth risking life or limb for. Ignoring the living-critters (since that's the obvious priorities), things like important papers, photo albums, and irreplacable items (the few collectibles I have that are truly irreplacable (dead artists, actual artwork, etc) would be higher on the priority list.

    9. If it were an emergency get out now situation... i'd try to get all of my pets rushed outside (cats dogs and fishies) , then if i had time i'd get my dolls.
Our family plan is actually to put the fish in the car so they don't get knocked over in a panic, and since all of our pets are trained to return to the property and stay close to home, we'd just get them outside instead of wasting precious minutes trying to get them into pet taxis, once everyone was outside we'd round them up and make sure they were secured to travel wherever we were going.

If i had time to pack, i'd secure my dolls and their belongings, my computer, and i'd make sure that every pet was in their travel taxi. (even the fish have a travel taxi bowl :XD), then whatever other things i'd see to need.

as a closing note, i realize that the way i'd handle the pet situation might seem...irresponsible or wrong, but i live in a rural area with a lot of space for the pets to hide safely, and we wouldn't leave anywhere without every last one of them. so please don't take offense to it as we really do care for them a lot.

    10. I actually have a little (size like 10" X 8" X 7") hard cloth zipper case with my most important belongings in it, that in case of an emergency I just pick it up and go. (Some photographs, chips from my cameras and childhood toys and jewlery I do not wear everyday). But my dolls are not in the case, as I keep them out all the time... if my family and dog were safe, I bet I would grab a doll or two on the way out... But like it has been said over and over... you never really know what you would do until it happens.

    11. First I'd make sure my pets got out safely, then if possible I'd rush to the doll room and just start chucking them out the window. I have a lot of dolls so it's not like I could just grab one or two and run out. I figure it's better for them to get banged up as I fling them to safety than burned!

    12. It depends.. If Kuro is right there or easily accessible, sure. But my precious cat Zelda and my husband are first. I actually have a little disaster back pack with some clothes, my wallet usually goes in there (plus that helps me remember where it is at any given moment), and I tend to have a little camper's set of food/supplies. I like to be prepared for random camping trips, sleep overs, and anything else. What started out as a fun thing to do as a kid turned into something I thought would be smart to continue on. Kuro could fit in there if need be, I'd love to make sure he was with me as something to hold onto if everything else gets destroyed in the house, but not major as long as Zelda and my hubby are alright.

    13. It would depend what sort of danger it was, if it was something we were to evacuate for that wasn't an immediate critical situation, then sure, I'd pack them up nice and safe. If on the other hand it was something like a house fire, family and the cats first. But if they were very close and I could litterally stretch an arm and reach them, I would take them, since my dolls are small, they wouldn't really get in the way of my and others' escape.

    14. Oh yes, if i had a few minutes to pack, they would be in there
When i lived in TN we had regular tornado warnings. At the time though i only had the one and he had been sadly ignored for a year or two. So my go to bag for the basement was filled with my portfolio of art, my laptop, and a teddy bear my mother gave me.
Where i am now we dont get many distasters. Id like to say in an emergency i would, be we have a good amount of pets, and with all the things and animals we have, dolls may not make the list.

    15. Kittens, cat, brother, (my parents would get me), doll.
It's good having one doll sometimes. :D

    16. I would be to busy concerning over my dog and parents I guess ^-^
But if I had a hand free (since I will be carying the dog) I would deffinitly take my doll with me. Or the Junjo romantica and clamp manga and nendo's.. Hmmm.. Maybe I should prepare an emergency bag with my doll and junjo and clamp stuff in it? Just in case ^-^ SO I just would have to grab it and get the hell out of wathever disaster is coming..

Aniways, living beings will be first on my 'saving' list. I care more about something that has emotions than about some plastic 'toy'. Something material can be replaced. A living thing can't. I would cry an eye out if I had saved my doll over my parents or dog actually. I would definitly risk my life to get my dog out of a fire, wouldn't do that for my doll.

    17. Since I don't actually have a doll yet, this is all hypothetical, of course. I do live in an area where we get tornadoes sometimes, so...when I finally get my first doll I'd like to say that I'd take him with me, but you never know how these things go. I'd probably grab my laptop first.

    18. Depends on circumstance. If I could, I would take them. But if it's live and leave the dolls or die trying to get them, I would unfortunately have to leave them ;-; I'd sob for weeks.

    19. It depends on how much time is available. If I have enough time (like an hour) yes. I would carry them out on my own.
But if its a real emergency and I have to get out imediately? No.
My Ferrets have my first priority (I get sometimes panic, when I am not at home. Some terrible could happening to them >.< I`m very paranoid about them)

    20. Well, everyone says "it depends on the situation," which is very much true, so... I thought about the only two possible natural disasters that could happen here: forest fire and volcanic eruption.

I'm in my room and there's a fire about to enter / blocking my exit: Rip the hard drive from my computer, open my window, kick the screen out, and jump out of the house with hard drive. Once safely outside, double back around the house to see if I can help anyone, and tell how much of the house is consumed by the fire.

Dolls wouldn't even be thought about in that situation, let alone carried with me.

House is on fire; it's clear that it will be destroyed, but I have a few minutes rather than seconds to get out:
Everyone says "I'd make sure my family and pets are okay first" -- well, DUH. XD I sure as hell hope nobody would save their doll while leaving their little brother to burn XD If I still had enough time after securing family and pets, basically I'd kick open my window and start throwing everything I could out of it. Computer would be first, and after that, anything I can get my hands on. Dolls would certainly go if they were in grabbing distance.

Volcanic eruption, I have to evacuate: Since it would be a "take what you can carry" situation, then honestly? The dolls would get left behind. I'd take food, clothes, and supplies. The only thing I'd take that's not life-essential would be my hard drive.

If I had a couple hours to prepare, I'd probably make an attempt to hide and stow away interesting or valuable objects, like my TV, Xbox, and dolls, to try and protect them in case there's looters in the aftermath while I'm still evacuated.

I guess in the end, it's my harddrive over everything else material. I'm an artist, and nearly ten years of my art is on there. My dolls are lovely, yes, but my art is my soul. If I lost my dolls, I'd be depressed; if I lost a lifetime of art, I would be shattered, broken, and that part of my soul would never fully heal.

Actually, the thought of losing that part of my soul is nearly as horrifying to me as the thought of losing my parents. Losing my dolls doesn't even come close to that level of horror.

      -------------------------------

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go backup the art folders on my hard drive xD;;; I do backups every few months, but they're all stored in my desk, so that wouldn't help me much in a disaster, would it? ;^^ I'm considering storing a copy at work or something.
