Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

    1. Hm... Of course I would first, before all, get my animals to safety and then check on my uncle. I would leave a lot of things, like my hundreds of books and irreplaceable art pieces, most of my clothes, but id take the dolls! There expensive and very sentamental, and they dont take up much space (I only have two MSDs)

    2. I have to. There's no way im leaving some things behind, no way. I can leave the clothes and the expensive manga and all that, but never, ever, Yun. He means so much to me, and...well the fear of getting burnt applies to my doll too, though I fully understand he wont feel it and he's an inanimate object but...the fear is still there.

    3. I think my (theoretical, as I haven't got them yet) dolls would be on the evacuation list, but not high. The pets would absolutely come first, including the urns with cremains (I'm not sure how realistic it would be to save my fish - although I have thought about it and planned). Next would be emergency supplies, if applicable (water & food, if the whole area is involved in the emergency, purse & money, that sort of thing), then the computer & back-up since it would be impossible to replace all the things stored there. As for standard possessions, I actually think my animation art collection would come ahead of dolls, since they're original & also couldn't be reproduced, although I doubt I'd even be able to fit all that into my car.

If I still had time and space available after that, the dolls would probably be next on the list. As incredibly fond of them as I could see being, I agree with the others who've said that a doll can be repurchased and customized the same way. It may never be the same as the original, but I wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice them to save my dog or cats.

    4. This might seem relevant to me now seeing the HUGE earthquake down in Christchurch New Zealand on Tuesday. I have absolutely no idea if I'd have the time. The situation seemed different there, I mean not many were at home when the earthquake hit. My friend was only left with the clothes on her back and her laptop. She hasn't been allowed to go back to her flat and get anything else.
If I put myself in that situation I would most likely to be at school or something so I wouldn't be at home when the disaster struck. If I was allowed to go back and get a few things. I think my doll will be on my list. It'll be quite high but essentials would be first, clothes ect.

But in a instant disaster when I am at home. I'd grab my bag and start shoving stuff into it. before grabbing my boy and rushing out.

(This is all when I have my doll that is :B )

    5. A fired comes to mind when thinking of this topic.
Warning people would be the first thing to do!
People have their priorities so my family would grab whats important, wheather being
important papers, money or other stuff
but YES my doll would defenitly be in mind! I would think screw my video games and systems!
if there is any material thing to safe THAT would be my doll.

    6. This topic is scary! If it were a fire I dont think I would have time to grab the dolls, I would be too worried about the pets and little sisters. if we had time to pack, say, even 5 minutes or something, I would be grabbing all of my dolls and jewelry. The dolls are the most expensive/sentimental things I own and if a natural disaster happened I would do my best to bring them all with me. Luckily majority of my collection is msd and tinies so I think I could fit them into a few duffle bags... I actually purchased some recently in case I ever need to transport all of my dolls ^^; as far as im concerned though, everything besides dolls and jewelry (family heirlooms) are replaceable because they lack that sentimental value. I wouldnt even cry as much if my computer was lost versus my dolls...

    7. I agree with the person above me.
      This topic is scary!
I've had dreams about these things before but I didn't know about the dolls in them so they didn't come into it.
It completely depends what the disaster is.
If it were a fire I'd worry because I have 6 gerbils.
1 in my bedroom, 1 in the front room & 4 babies in the middle room of my house.
So I wouldn't know what to do, but I'm sure in that situation I'd figure it out.
Also my dog would take high priority, I care about my family of course but the animals are a lot more helpless.
I don't know how much dog would react, & my gerbils can't move themselves, but there's 5 of us in my house [people] & I'm sure they'd help with the gerbils & dog.
So top priority after living things would be the gifts & cards from my boyfriend.
Nothing could ever bring those back, even if he was to buy me them again it wouldn't be the same.

If it was a disaster that gave us time to prepare I would get a big suitcase & shove the gifts, cards & dolls in.
I'd probably only put clothes or anything in with them to protect the dolls from bumps etc on the way.
Most other things I wouldn't care much about.
I'd probably put my diaries in, amongst the clothes that used to belong to people that are important to me that they've let me keep.

But first & foremost would be my pets, family & gifts from my boyfriend.

    8. This is an easy question right now! There is construction being done on my apartment, so all of my dolls are packed neatly into their new duffle bag/carrying case. It would be a matter of a few seconds to grab them, so they would definetly come. I'd also scoop up my laptop. And on my way out I'd make sure my roommate and her cat are safe as well.

    9. The first thing I'll evacuate are my pets and family.
If I have time left, the second things are my laptop and Doll. ^^

    10. My mom and my kitty come first. At the first alerts of ANYTHING severe or dangerous, I would pack my things ahead of time, like my laptop, some spare changes of clothes (I can't live without my lounge pants!) and of course, my dollies.

    11. For me, if we had to get out of the appartment quick dolls would come with me because i will have a carryer for her. But for the most part if it was drop and run i would have a sad mem day for my lost dolly >;( UGH! but in better cases, ill have them already in a bag ready to go. :( I dont like thinking about this because my friends cusine was burned alive while in the shower one year and its been very depression for us all because she was deeply loved. <3 RIP Kat. Also my aunty died from cancer RIP Aunty <3

    12. Funny that the question crossed my mind this week. Tornado sirens sounded and we had to seek shelter. Kid went in first (of course). Then we gathered all 9 cats (a feat in and of itself). We already have the 'essentials' stored (waters, batteries, first aid) and I made sure we grabbed wallets, keys and meds. My last thought was for my son's favorite stuffed animal and if my dolls would fit.

At first I felt dumb, but then not really...the most important things were priority. I couldn't help but think of other things important to me afterward. Thankfully we didn't get hit this time.

    13. For me it would completely depend on how much time I had. If I knew something big was coming in a couple of days I would pack up my two girls and take them with me after making sure that the rest of my family and the animals would be safe. However, if I had minutes I don't know if they would be at the top of my list to grab. I'd be more likely to grab one of my childhood treasures and my cat :)

    14. I posted this before the last year earthquake (today is one year since it happened) and now I can say there was absolutly no time to even catch my dogs and my cat was out of reach cause she run away through the window to the backyard. The only things I could grab were my eyeglasses and my pijama pants (I was sleeping in my underwear) and then went to find my parents and brother and that was really hard cause you barely could walk.
In a moment like that you don't have time to think about almost anything, you just have to protect yourself. My mind was completly blank and I was terrified.

Happily nothing happened to us, our pets, our house (just a broken window and a shelf) and to my dolls. They were on my bed and that was what saved them. We were really, really lucky.
I really love my dolls, they are more than just things to me and I surely would be devastated if something bad happens to them, but in a situation like that you can do anything but save yourself and the ones you love.

    15. My cat, my laptop and chargers, grab a box or laundry basket and swoop all dolls into it *as carefully as the situation allows, id rather have them with maybe a scratch or two than not at all* im a pretty fast frantic person i think i could have everything out and into my car that i needed rather quickly.

    16. It depends on what the emergency is for me. For a tornado, I usually have time from when the siren goes off to if the thing actually hits. I grab laptop, charger, phone, my baby blanket (The most important thing I own in my eyes, made for me by my grandmother who has passed away), a stuffed cat I've owned since I was five (second most important thing), and THEN my dolls. So yeah, I run back and forth to gather things up until everything is safely in the basement.
For a fire... Hmm. Like I said, baby blanket and stuffed cat first. But I imagine if the place was on fire I wouldn't bother carrying them out. I'd probably kick out the window and toss them outside before running out down the stairs. My dolls are right next to the window too so if I thought about it, they might get wrapped into the blanket and tossed too xD Easier to fix a broken doll part than a burned up one.
I don't have to worry about hurricanes or earthquakes where I live, so I really only have to consider the two emergencies. (Well, flooding too but I don't live next to any rivers)
So yeah, as far as those two go, if I have TIME I'll take the dolls with me (I don't have pets to worry about or really anyone other than myself), but I have other things that are worth far more to me that I'd be crushed if I lost them that I'd take care of first. I can buy new dolls, but things that were made just for me that I've had since I was little, I can't just go to the store and buy those again.

    17. This happened to me recently - the floods in Australia were right where I am... my mother would not let me take my dolls; we stacked them high, high up, and we live on the first floor of an apartment building, so I had to settle with that. But I did keep thinking, about all my precious possessions - I had to leave my guitar, my harry potter books, and my dolls.
We had to pack the pets first, and they took up a lot of the room in the car. I suppose if we had less pets, and more time, we could have packed some more of our valuables. But lives were more valuable at that point, and we just had to get going.

In future, if I can manage it, I'll have bags in a central spot, a first aid kit and battery operated radio somewhere near by, a torch, and at least a dozen bottles of water... just in case. Time matters.

Edit; we came out of it all okay and nothing damaged, we were very lucky people.

    18. It goes that way naturally; living ones go first. I have luckily never had a situation to evacuate in hurry, but if there was one, I think dolls wouldn´t be that important. In time of disaster basic things are first to think.

My friend´s house burned in middle of night last year, and she told it was really close to be too late. With fire, it´s matter of just few minutes. They had time to grab both babies from their beds with the blankets, her husband took his phone and that was about it. The firemen told them, that if they´d have tried to get their daughter from other room, too, it would have been too late. Luckily, she was visiting friends overnight then. They lost about everything but luckily all human lives were safed.

    19. If it was a flood or hurricane, that should provide us a little more time to pack my things. So anything I deem necessary to bring (some electronics like my ipod, laptop) to some favored stuffed animals. Of course, I'd bring my dolls. During a fire, especially if it's one of those big fires where if you don't get out immediately, you die, then I'll leave it. (Though I can honestly care less bout my life, so it depends)

    20. There was just a report of a fire on the news, and how the people had less than 10 minutes to get out. I immediately thought of my dolls, and what I would do. I know my son and dog would be my first priority, but if my son grabbed the dog I would grab my resin dolls and Mrs Beasley, if total hysteria didn't claim me first! They all sit in my bedroom and would be close at hand. I've actually given this a lot of thought and I am thinking of hanging a cloth drawstring laundry bag on the back of my bedroom door which I could throw things in if I had to leave in a rush.
