Do height differences in the same 'family' bother you?

Mar 9, 2005

    1. My dolls often act as models, posing for my drawings and paintings and photography. In fact, that one of the best things about BJDs in my opinion-- their posing and customizing options make them very versatile models. And as I do not want to just draw/paint/photograph one size of model, I plan to own a variety of dolls in many different shapes and sizes(though the mini size is my first love). I don't mind if they're different sizes or out of proportion with one another at all-- it just means that the dolls that look odd next to one another won't be posing in the same pieces, probably.
Although I would like to have at least two dolls of any given size range I end up owning, because I don't want any of them to feel lonely or out of place. XD

    2. It doesn't bother me at all, and I mostly decide on what size to get based on the age of the character. The only one "out of proportion" is Eve, but she has a Napoleon complex now which works with the story.

    3. It would probably bother me if my MSD size girl didn't look like she was somewhere between 8 and 11 years old. As it is she's perfect as a child next to my adult SD sized dolls. If I was just randomly buying dolls to increase a 'collection' it wouldn't matter either way.

    4. It depends on the character. Child-like MSDs make fantastic children for SDs. The more mature MSDs can work as sprite-like characters for the larger SDs as well. The height/size discrepancies can be an issue for me (personally) even amongst SDs, but I'm warming up to the idea of a super tall boyfriend for one of my ladies. :D

    5. It can be a little funny at times but it does not bother me. I figure that though my MSD is older than one of my SDs it is because she is just a very small person. She is not human anyways so it does not matter ^n.n^ plus the size difference in every creates a pleasing display.

    6. Well to be honest...
      yes. A little.
I'm saving up for a DZ Mo3, but I also really wanted a B&G Sky, but I don't think I can get him now because the molds don't fit right at all. What I mean is, Sky has such a young-looking face, and Mo looks a lot more mature, and it wouldn't make sense if the mini was the older-looking one... to me at least XD

    7. i don't care at all cause each is doing there own thing, and i just get what i like.
it's the family of be who you are and don't fit any assumptions

    8. Size doesn't matter to me. I have a 1/6 size doll that has a mature adult body and proportions coming, and she'll be the same size as my 1/6 scale Soom tiny. It bothers me not.

    9. I guess it depends on if you already have the dolls or not. For me, expecting my first BJD next month, I wouldn't plan on getting a larger size than she is (40-43cm). Only because the size difference would bother me seeing them together realistically. But if I already HAD the dolls, then of course it wouldn't bother me, I'd luv em.

    10. I still have to get my first doll, but having seen a lot of the BJDs one of my friends owns and having played with them as well, I'm pretty sure height difference doesn't bother me much. In fact it's exactly what I need for the little family I'm planning. Most of my characters the dolls will represent don't age anyway for one reason or another.

    11. My different size dolls don't mix at all. The SDs have their own world while my tinies, who are much more varied in size, have another. Since the tinies live in a magical place all the different sizes don't matter.

    12. proportion bothers me, hieght doesnt, i get around proportion by the fact that all my doll are fey/supernatural beings of some sort, non of them are human, even the ones with round ears, and they are all the size they are, but im weird, even when i was a kid, it bothered me to much to even play with barbies and other dolls at the same time

    13. Well, I only have one doll at the moment. She'll actually be the shortest of my dolls for a while actually. Lol. But I don't really know if it'll bother me. I don't think it will. I don't think that would be a sort of thing to bug me. But I could be wrong. XD

    14. I have 14 resins; of these, only a handful are the same scale or manufacturer and they range in height from a FelixDoll Brownie to a Lati Red M. To me, they all fit together and occupy the same world. My 'big boy' is the only 'real' one of the lot and all the rest are spirits, fairies, and other figments of his imagination. I am looking forward to the day I find the perfect 70cm+ doll to be his boyfriend!

Real people come in an amazing array of sizes and proportions. All you need to do to get dolls to 'fit together' is to invent a storyline premise to accommodate.

    15. Size doesn't bother me in other people's dolls, and often time the difference is quite cute. Although I'm really picky about height, especially since I won't buy another MSD unless it is shorter than my current boy doll.

    16. I do find the difference between an SD and MSD a bit much, expecially since all my (upcoming)MSD's characters are supposed to be older teens and young adults. This might be becuase all the SDs I like are nearing the 70CM range.

My first dolls are Yo-SD range tinies, meaning that they'll scale perfectly to look like children next to all my MSDs.

    17. Height differences bother me. I don't care what other people do with their dolls, but I like my human adult dolls to be roughly the same height, with the girls realistically proportional to the guys. The one mini and the Yo size dolls I have are children. The really tiny dolls I have are in a magic kingdom all their own. The only time the tiny elves mix with the humans is if the children catch a glimpse of one in the garden. I might want a huge guardian angel new Dollshe at some point in time, but I expect that he will be part of the magical kingdom as well.

    18. I only have one SD size body at the moment, with two heads sharing it. They are in the same world as my minis (who are absolutely all adults), and are around the same age as them, also - Devon's a few years older, but Ciaran is probably not much older than the oldest minis. I haven't shot a photo "in storyline" with them together yet (and those will be few and far between anyway), but when I do I will do my best to minimize the differences in height. In group shots Devon stands out because he's so tall, but it's really not much different than my co-worker's photo of himself with Yao Ming! My minis are my main characters - I'm working in a 1/4 scale world here, the other guys are just freakishly tall which I will attempt to minimize in photos whenever possible. The SD size ones are in the same world but won't interact with the others all that often, so I'm just considering the size difference a challenge to work around.

The tinies aren't human at all, as a clockwork creation and a fairy, size is kind of immaterial there, so they will just interact with the minis as they are.

While it would be awesome for photostories to have them all the same scale, that's not going to happen so I work around it. For myself, I like having different sizes represented - the tinies are most fun to dress and easy to tote around in my purse if I choose to, the minis are most fun for photos and posing, and the big guys are fun to carry around even though they're heavy.

    19. This is so true. I really wanted to portray the diversity and eclecticism of an ordinary inner-city neighborhood, but in a "fantasy" way. So I chose a robot girl as my main character and she explores the neighborhood collecting various friends and their stories from all walks of life. Through this, she learns what it truly is to be "human". So I can collect pretty much anything I want to in any size and it all fits. I love it!:aheartbea

    20. Mine have a pretty wide range of heights. XD My girls: Narae is 43cm, Zaoll hybrid is about 53cm, Limhwa is 57cm, and Supia is 58cm. My boys: Soom IO twins are 65cm and Souldoll Ize is 63cm. My girls coming in should be about 59cm and 61cm respectively. I like the range and pairing up some shorter ones with taller ones or my tiny with tall ones or short ones. XD
