Do you appreciate your dolls less when you have more of them?

Dec 21, 2005

    1. I guess its kind of like with kids or pets; they're all very different and you appreciate them each for different reasons. Still, the more you have, the less individual effort you can afford to put into each one (arguably). Still, if you find you dont feel close to one you can sell it if you're down with that.

EDIT: that last part DEFINITELY doesnt work for kids and pets! Just thought I'd clarify ^^

    2. Honestly I wouldn't say so...

I was never one to set a limit on myself for my dolls and I have quite a few and still want a couple more. I don't think that more necessarily means you'll appreciate them less, I mean think of it this way, you will have beautiful art around you all the time! Honestly sometimes I just sit in my living room and stare at my dolls, because they're something I created with my imagination. I've put so much of myself into them, appreciating them doesn't have to equate 'playing' with them, sometimes them just being there is enough ^_^

Yes I rambled a bit, sorry :sweat

    3. i wouldnt say i like them less. of course the more dolls i have, there will always be some that will be, at some time, be ''left behind''. but it does not mean i like them less, because if i 'play' with a certain doll during the week, the next week it'll be a new one :)
if i start liking a doll less it wont be because i have too many... (well i think xD)

    4. Having many dolls doesn't make it any less special to you. I'm sure before you buy one you spend a lot of time thinking about it before you decide. That alone already gives you an attachment to them. You may sometimes favour one over another but it wouldn't make you love your the other ones any less.

    5. I agree that for some people, they cannot give equal affection to all their dolls if they have a hole bunch. However, that is not true for others. It really depends on the person. I have set my limit between five and seven, only because I don't think I can handle any more than that. I want to be able to spend equal amounts of time with my dolls as well as being able to provide things like clothes, shoes, wigs, etc. I know that if I have to many dolls, some will end up neglected and unprovided for, there is no way I could afford to buy them all the things they need. So setting a limit for ones self may not be necessary, but just know when you have reached a point were you don't think you could take on another doll.

    6. So Basically for me I think that I love them all equally because they are all characters of mine all part of a story one in which without one the others would not exist so I love them all even though the total is two going on three with one getting a new body.

    7. Not at all. The more dolls I acquire, the more I appreciate the differences between each of them.
Although when a new doll arrives I do pay it more attention for a while, naturally, trying to get it outfitted and such... I just make sure I do all of that away from the other dolls... it feels like I am neglecting the others when I concentrate on just one doll!

    8. Kinda like what everyone else is saying, each one is different and unique, so I dont appreciate them any less than if I had just 1 or 100. (I wish I had 100!! Lol!) But also lately Ive started to appriciate them more since I have to sell them. My tiny baby Kohana is already mummified and boxed up ready to go to her new home, but for tonight and until she is sold also, my first girl Akina is sitting right next to me keeping me company. :) Its kinda weird but I swear she looks sad. I mean Feilian's always kinda have that sad face, but she looks more sad than usual. >.<

    9. Hmm.. Maybe this is too practical a suggestion, but I say: go for the ones you like! It's the only way for you to find out what works best for you! If it turns out you can't bond with them, or that you indeed feel that you now have too many, you can always sell them to someone else who will give them a good home.

    10. People have been using pets as an example, I've good experience with those. We've had many pets at once, and while I loved them all - I often felt it was too much. I felt bad that some days I would give attention to some but not really have time for others. Dolls you dont' have to worry about this since they're not living. That being said, I'm still trying to keep my collection small, atleast for the time being. I find it's too easy to jump and buy a mould you're 'in love with' and then end up not bonding with it. I found I was happy with a number around 5 with my last doll type hobby before this. perhaps eventually I can do more but in the meantime a smaller number and building their wardrobe etc will be my priority.

    11. i have to disagree about the pets. i have had as many as 7 dogs at one time and i never felt like i wasn't giving one dog enough attention or favoring another. (i did have one dog glued to my side but he has separation anxiety so you cant do much about that lol) im very attentive to my pets behavior, body language, and personality and im just as close to my 3 dogs now i was to my 7 a few years ago. of course it helps that i have a large animal loving family. but even when im the sole caretaker each animal has their special attention and love. i could ramble on and on about how great each one was =] but this is going off topic so lets talk about dolls ^.^

when i first got into BJDs i didnt want to have more than 4 because i was afraid i would appreciate them less or play with them less. now im not afraid of that. i have plans for quite a few dolls (probably around 13 total...so far..) and im not worried about the things i was before. siren (currently my only doll) does not get played with much because he has horns and hooves and im afraid of his wig falling off and breaking his horns, or him tipping over and getting chips in the back of his hooves where the little nub sticks out

but i still love admire and appreciate him and do not want to sell him. there are other dolls i have plans for that will probably be like siren and be shelf dolls only (i still take him down and hold him while i watch tv, hes safe on the couch or bed, i just don't take him outside for photos or anything like that) but there are certain dolls i already know will be taken out often and i will have a hard time putting them away

as long as im happy having the dolls and i dont feel like ive wasted money on them i dont think ill have any problems. im going into this knowing some of them ill be to nervous to play with and knowing some of them will get out alot more than others. this doesnt mean i wont appreciate them all.

    12. I don't really know... :o I worry about that myself. I tell myself I can't own more than three or four because I know I do play favorites. That's why two of my dolls will be twins, so I don't play favorites between their molds. With any others, I hope I don't play favorites too badly, if at all.

    13. My girlfriend and I want a big doll family, but I totally understand this mindset. I feel a little sad when I see people with a bunch of dolls where one or two are not fully dressed or say things like "still faceup-less." I wonder if it is a time, monetary, or lack of appreciation problem. When browsing people's dolls earlier this evening, we came across someone with a lot of dolls and as we were looking at them, we noted that they looked rushed, several were without bodies of their own, and their outfits were sloppy. Maybe we were wrong to assume so, but it seemed as though the quantity was overcoming the quality (and love).

My girlfriend and I are going to take our collection slowly. If we feel we are overwhelmed, we'll stop. We don't want to degrade the dolls we have by trying to complete the fandom collection we want to build, if the passion is no longer there.

    14. I worry about this myself, which is why for the first year I've put a limit on how many I get. I'm still new to the hobby. I believe I will favor some characters more than others, because I loved a few characters more to begin with. They will all be connected within a family. So, in that sense they're all equally important. The family wouldn't be finished without every single character.

    15. Do you appreciate your dolls less when you have more of them?

Not, just the opposite. I appreciate even more each one of them, individually and as essential pieces of the group all they make. In my resin bunch everyone is important to each other and any new that joins shows me, besides his/her own way, also something else about the rest. Characters develop separately, but together and together, but separately, like a family. The limit I had in mind was also lower than the number of BJD I have nowadays, but even so I still have a limit - I also care about being able to handle all of them - for the now on. I will only fall in purchasing more BJD if new members join the crew in the title (One Piece manga and anime series) most of them comes from.

    16. Sometimes I wonder if they ever get lonely but then I imagine it from their point of view. Of course, I have a Toy Story point of view on the doll world. They're moving when I don't pay attention, so the bigger the family, the happier they are, and as long as they have one friend, they're good to go.

So if I notice one person is off to the side, sad, then I need to find out why. Fix the problem and make them happy, and get them back into the group. Find them a friend\partner\playmate, and then everything is fine. Because I can't always be there with them, since I work. I imagine during the day they're playing and talking in low voices and quiet sounds because my mom is nearby. They're happy because they have someone. Not because I'm there. I'm just a caretaker. That nice old human lady who smells funny and eats food and does those nasty bathroom things they don't have to.

So no. I think I appreciate them just fine. I love how each of them are different and how their joints work. How this one came from a broken home and that one came from an abusive family. How this one needed a little extra attention but now has friends and toys to play with to make him smile when you can catch it. Even if the last time I might have cuddled with him was weeks ago, I kiss him every night before bed and every day before I go to work.

Because they're able to take care of themselves. They're dolls. :3 And "I love them all so much". (I say that when I leave. "I love you all so much".)

    17. I don't think having more dolls has made me love any of them less- I think it's like Ravendolls said, they don't all require equal time and attention. Every single one of mine has his or her own personality, and I make of point of spending the first couple of days that a doll is out of the box cuddling and fussing with that particular doll. It's like bonding time. That's why I never get more than one at a time if I can help it! But that's not to say I feel the same about all of my gang- I tend to cuddle one more than the rest, and probably he's the absolute last one I'd ever sell, but then there's my first doll who's a close second when it comes to cuddling and my unwillingness to sell him. The other three I don't snuggle as much- character wise, it just seems that the nature of the doll isn't to want as much handling time. My girl and my Lati boy honestly never seem to need the same sort of attention as my favourite and my first... Overall, it's up to you, if you feel like you can't love them all, then sell the ones you love the least! I have to say, I'm working on shrinking my collection right now- just by one, but I've only got 5!

    18. It's definitely not true for everyone, but for me I feel like I prefer one special doll. I got too many blythes and then felt overwhelmed about doing anything with any of them, and forever wished I committed to one special girl. Now that I am into bjds, especially Unoas with their changeable faces, I am going to have just the one Lusis. I can always switch out her face with a Sist or sleeping face (which I have) and wig if I want her to look different. I do know people with large collections who really love them all. I'm really only capable of spreading that kind of attention around to my kids lol.

    19. I think you should get all the dolls you really like, the ones that really speak to you, and then see if you can live with all of them. You don't have too many dolls until some of them aren't fully dressed and others don't have places to 'live' and are cluttering up your house. One of my problems is my budget, and I just recently realized that I shouldn't be buying dolls that I only kinda like because I can afford them, I should be saving for the ones I really love. :)

    20. C: recently got complimented for having 11 dolls and still loving them all equally C: so no.

The more, the merrier. and still all the love to share :'D

      SHARE THE LOVE <3
