Do you bother with eyelashes?

Nov 20, 2011

    1. Eyelashes can be such a PITA to apply, and no joking about it. But I do like dolls with eyelashes; they can change a doll's expression so much.
My decision on eyelashes (and whether to bother with them :)) depends on the doll, however. Currently, I have one doll without eyelashes, my Elfdoll Half-Open Eyed Bambu boy; when commissioning his face-up, I asked the artist not to apply eyelashes because I liked his semi-closed eyes. His eyes are rather small, so with eyelashes he'd look close-eyed (er, is that a word?) instead. With my DragonDoll Di, on the other hand, eyelashes give him a more mature, serious look. So, are eyelashes worth it? Well, I'd say that depends on the look you want for your dolls, and your patience to apply them. I usually run of the latter after 15 minutes, dried glue and the devil little things sticking on to everything BUT the eye sockets.

    2. As Scyllua above me said, I like the way eyelashes can change a doll's expression, and for that reason, I do like my dolls to have eyelashes that help express their characters-- however, eyelashes are So horrible to apply! At this point, they are the only part of the face-up process that truly confounds me. Usually, I don't bother anymore, I assume I will just wind up with ruined eyelashes and a lot of glue inside the doll.

    3. So far only my doll with the company's default face-up has attached eyelashes. I definitely think some dolls look wonderful with them, but I usually just stick with the painted lower lashes.

    4. Eyelashes are very important to me notonly in dolls but in people as well.
I can't stand the bald-eye-look, it drives me insane to see eyes that have very
few eyelashes. While there is verylittle people can do to change the thickness
of their lashes, it is easy to changeon most dolls. I would prefer my dolls to have applied
lower and upper lashes for realism aswell, but sadly doing lower lashes is a bit hard
because of the size and length offiber/hair in comparison to the scale of most heads.
Otherwise all my dolls would haveapplied lower and upper lashes - only one of them so far
      has them both.

    5. Though I really think that eye lashes complete the whole face of the doll but I share the same problem. I tend to ruin it whenever I would accidentally rest my doll into a wrong position. It mess up with the long hair during our trip outside. But I love the effect of the eyelashes. I haven't tried the face up with eye lashes, maybe I should one of this days. Thanks for the brilliant idea.

    6. Oh I always bother with eyelashes. :aheartbea They are such an adorable detail, and for me really improve how the doll looks in profile! I don't like eyelashes to be very long, though- I want them small enough that you can only see them up close, and they don't cast a dark shadow over the eyes. Because I always use short ones, I've never had a problem with them getting rumpled from travel or anything.

    7. My girls have lashes, my boys don't.

Though my newest girl might just have lashes on one eye because I'm contemplating an eyepatch and it's not worth squishing lashes.

    8. I can't say I'm always bothered since my guys are a total mix of lashes
I have one dolls that doesn't have lashes since his head is way too small. And in my opinion he does not need them either. One has massive upper lashes and painted on lower lashes. The other two only have upper lashes and my squinty eye MNF only has partial lower lashes.
In the cases that I applied the lashes myself I really looked to the personality of the doll and the face-up.
As example I can't imagine Van without his enormous femmy lashes. It's just part of who he is :)

    9. Most of my dolls are Dollfie Dreams, and they don't normally have eyelashes. I think DDs look great without them, however my resins all need eyelashes. Just personal preference, I guess. Azur will be the first I've received without a face-up, and when I send him off to get one I'll request that the artist apply them. :)

But I do have this one custom DD head that I bought off of Y!J that has them. I found them adorable, and essential to the doll's look of innocence. Unfortunately she was left with my mom for a bit, and sat in a shipping box in a hot car for weeks *grumbles*, and the glue holding her eyelashes melted away. Luckily the head was ok, but I tried and tried to glue those darn lashes back in to no avail, and eventually accidently ripped them. :(

But I'm going to keep trying, though. I'll have to get another pair of eyelashes, and go through the pain of trying to apply them again, but to me it's worth it, because this one DD needs them. LOL

    10. I love lashes on dolls, I think it adds an extra dimension to their faces, so their eye area doesn't look so flat.

My doll is second hand, and he came with lashes, but they're a bit grimey looking.

I really like him with lashes so I would like him to have lashes.. does anyone know if theres a way to remove and replace them without destroying his faceup? Or would it be a better idea to just try to clean them up?

    11. If my doll is 30cm or bigger, I put eyelashes on them, both male and female. I buy the ones from Diaso so its only a buck-fifty for up to two dolls to have them. Since I do re-faceup them every now and again, I simply use tacky glue. Goes on easy, comes off easy.
A smaller doll really has to feel like they need the lashes or it is way to much work to make them look natural. Tiny dolls just get painted on for me.

    12. My two boys don't have lashes, and I don't plan to buy them to my third one either. (He is a floating head at the moment.) Tox, my first doll had lashes before, it was part of the company face-up, he had them for more than a year and it always bothered me - though I didn't know it was the lashes. Something was off and it took me time to figure out what it was^^' So I got rid of the lashes -> ta-daa, problem solved xD He is much more boyish without them in my opinion ^^
      On a girl... well I don't know. I guess if I had a girl, she'd have lashes, it's a girl thing XD

    13. I only have eyelashes in one of my dolls and it's my SSDF. They really suit him so I have no problem with them, but I just don't think they'd look good in any of my other dolls so I haven't really tried.

    14. I like lashes. I think it adds more femininity to the girls. When I did my first face up for my Lexie, it didn't feel complete until her lashes were on. It just added a bit more to her face.

    15. Very recently I tried putting fake human-sized lashes on my dolls (I cut them up to fit ;) )....I have a feeling all of my dolls will now have lashes XD

I never really cared until I saw how they looked, now I'm addicted!

    16. I haven't yet, but I suppose at some point I may. Half of my dolls have eyelashes from the company or the face-up artist. I really do like them, but it's such a pain to try to put them in their little heads.

    17. if my dolls come with eyelashes as their default part of faceup, i'll keep them. if not, i dont bother, really, unless its an important part of their character.

    18. Eyelashes really add that extra oomph to a faceup, in my opinion. I wouldn't want to have a doll go completely without eyelashes unless there was some reason in character.

    19. both my boys have been without eyelashes for some minor periods but I prefer them having it, especially my boy December who's spposed to have this mysterious and feminine look~
SAe however... I guess he could go without but, nah, I like him the way he is right now, with eyelashes

    20. Most of my dolls have eyelashes, even the boys. They are a necessary part of the faceup to me, although there are some sculpts and faceups that work without them. Three of my dolls don't have eyelashes. One came to me without them and I like the harsh look it gives him, another looks adorably bright-eyed without them, and the third has such narrow eyes I'm pretty sure the eyelashes would just take over his sockets XD
