1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you consider Dollfie Dream to be a BJD?

Jul 8, 2009

    1. Sure, they just have cute little anime faces. :)

    2. It's kind of a tough one, but I'm tentatively going with no. The newer bodies have joints that seem to be debatable as actual ball joints. If you decide that you do consider them ball joints, then on a purely literal interpretation they are BJDs.

But not all terminology works on a purely literal basis, even acronyms. When's the last time you heard "fubared" in a situation where the thing in question was truly no longer recognizable? There do need to be specific terms so we all know what we're talking about in a given conversation. BJD seems to have fallen into place as the standard term to refer to resin, strung, ball-jointed dolls (even if sometimes those ball joints are kind of peanut-shaped :sweat). When you use this word amongst doll collectors, they probably aren't going to picture a DD or an Obitsu in their heads. Regardless of accuracy, you're probably not going to have much luck forcing them to start using a different term like modern-mostly-but-not-necessarily-asian-elastic-strung-polyurethane-or-french-or-combination-of-the-two-resin-ball-jointed-doll . . .

I really like DDs. I've seen some really lovely ones. I don't own any and probably never will because lines have to be drawn somewhere for the sake of my finances, but I don't see them or their owners as inferior, and wish for the same courtesy in return. I just don't see DDs in the same way as I see my resin BJDs.

    3. they are not the same as any other bjds since they have urealistic features and such but the way they are made have similarities so i still consider them ball-jointed-dolls

    4. I just realised that the skeleton in post1 has swapped hands o.o

lol ehhh I think they are a lot different they are bjd´s but not the same as those strung with elastic ... DD are more like "first class obitsu"? XD

    5. i´d go with the basic definition: is the Doll Based on Ball Joints? -Yes
Is a DD a BJD? -Yes, since it is based on Ball Joints.

The Dolls have differences like colors do. There are many different types of red (like magenta red), the types vary from one another but are still all red.

    6. I wholeheartedly agrees with your post :)

    7. Actually many resin bjds have unrealistic features. I have several that are highly stylized and not so dissimilar from a DD.

    8. Why wouldn't they be?
Don't let DoA fool you into thinking "what's technically a bjd" and what's not.
They're dolls with ball joints, some have string some don't. Anyone that says other, needs to get their facts strait.

    9. Actually to get the facts straight....no, DDs are not BJD. Someone on DOA emailed Volks asking about it, and Volks replied so. It was posted in DD discussion thread I think.

    10. That is my view on the matter too. I suppose in some ways their jointing systems are more similar to some types of action figure, but they are closer to a BJD in my eyes. To me, Dollfie Dreams are just another type of BJD, as are the tiny 'barbie-with-joints' type of doll.

Since we are talking about facts, do you have any sources that can be linked to that verify this fact? Like a screenshot of the email between the forum member and Volks? He said, she said isn't enough of a source for me, though I think I will just email Volks myself and ask since they are pleasant to communicate with and have it first hand.

    11. Does it matter? I love my two lovely DD girls and I love my Kid delf. I call them all my bjds. I take my DD girls to meet ups and everyone is smitten by them just as well as my Kid delf.

      Just saying....

    12. It does not matter what Volks say, the fact still stands, they're dolls with ball joints. That makes them a BJD.

    13. Actually, that is true. BJDs were not invented by Volks, they do not have the final say on what an actual BJD is any more than the Den of Angels staff do. BJDs of all types have been around for hundreds of years in dozens of countries, most common are the German BJDs which inspired Volks to make the Asian variety. Although I have even seen BJDs from Africa that were over 70 years old.

    14. They are bjds in the same way antique bisque german or french dolls are, and IMO DD's shoudnt be "grandfathered in" if the even older BJDs aren't. The first DD's I understand Slighty more , as they are actually strung, The newer ones and obitsus are more oversized action figures. The majority of this forum is resin abjd's. Some of how they are handled is the same, but Alot isnt.

    15. Ask, and you shall receive: #131

Well, that definition is taken from Wikipedia, and who wrote the definition in Wiki? Fellow hobbyists, probably.

    16. Yes, but you also have to take into account what bjd means in the context of this hobby. Ball jointed dolls have been made for centuries, but they aren't all what this hobby covers. BJD here is shortened from abjd. DoA isn't the one and only decision maker when it comes to what dolls count for the entire hobby, and there are differences from forum to forum, but those differences only stretch so far. A 100 year old European ball jointed doll wouldn't be on topic on any of the abjd forums because it is clearly very different from the dolls covered here.

Does a DD count as an actual abjd? Probably not, yet I have no problem with them (or Obitsus for that matter) being lumped in with the strung resin dolls either. They have similar enough aesthetic qualities and purpose to where they 'feel' like they fit in ok. This is the argument for their inclusion that I feel makes the most sense. Dictionary definitions do little good when the terms aren't being used the same way.

    17. But OP was not talking about this hobby on this site as much as she is means in general.
DoA is very selective about what is a ABJD, but that does not mean everyone follows the same rules outside of the site, nor do they set the standards for everyone off the of the site.

    18. :/
Seriously? Leave your conspiracy theories at home.
Considering how there isn't even a entry for "Ball Jointed Doll(s)" in the dictionary, Wikipedia is as good as it gets.
Besides that, you've stated nothing in your defense of "why DD aren't real BJD" but one opinion from a company.

    19. I wouldn't assume she meant only by DoA standards since she didn't specify, and I think I made it clear that DoA does not decide what is an abjd or not for the entire abjd realm. However, I'm pretty well positive she means this hobby, and this hobby still does not automatically include every doll that happens to have ball shaped joints. I'm not arguing against DDs being included, but I do think you're applying the definition of a ball jointed doll in a way that does not entirely jive with the abjd hobby (not just DoA).
