1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you consider taking pictures of your doll fun?

Feb 21, 2018

    1. I enjoy seeing these more informal and candid types of snapshots a lot as well as learning to appreciate (and learn from) more formal and intricate photography. @MiniNena I'll look for your Instagram. :)

This could be a fun challenge to post about as well as give people a better idea of scale. It took me quite some time to find a photo of a human with a Trinity when I first discovered those massive girls.

    2. taking photos is extremely enjoyable. It further brings them to life especially when doing a photo sequence. It also cane be a really good time killer and hobby. playing around with photo effects, poses, themes, ideas etc, is a lot funner if one does it on their own time and lets their creativity flow.

    3. Great fun, but amazing amount of work to set up a great shot with perfect lighting, especially since I like natural light, and finding the right props, etc. to get the image I want, and one that makes sense for the dolls story or personality.

    4. I used to enjoy it, but it honestly doesn't seem worth the time to me these days. If I'm going to pick up my camera and burn my few precious "spare time" hours that way, there are much more interesting things to photograph than dolls.

    5. It takes me hours to days just to pose and take the right photos!! Hahahaha i always have alot of spare clothes on the side to have different styles and i do different times in a day because i prefer natural light when taking photos!! XD

    6. When I first got into BJDs, taking photos was the primary selling feature! I had a lot of fun posing and trying to work out the best spots for lighting in my neighbourhood (at the time I lived directly opposite a major trail system on the Niagara Escarpment which was just a brilliant place to take pictures).

But I've since moved several times since then and I've come to realize that what I really loved wasn't so much specifically taking doll photos as much as it was taking doll photos in those specific environments. I'll still take a doll out for a few photos every now and then, but I'm just not as interested in it given my current environment.

    7. For me BJD's are the perfect thing for pictures. I love to photograph everything (not that I am any good). I just think it is a lot of fun, and a relaxing way to forget about the daily stress.
The main point for me with a BJD is the insanly many posing options.. and what fun is that, if you are not gonna save it with a photo :D
I am still on the lookout for my first BJD, but photogaphy is definantly a huge part of me getting one :D

    8. I love taking photos of my dolls (I have about 9k uploaded to Flickr, lol). I'm not nearly as active in taking photos during the winter, however.

I use my cell phone a lot for informal photos. I use my big DSLR for more serious shoots.

    9. Taking photos of my doll is enjoyable. I really like taking photos and he is a super pretty model:D I use my mirrorless camera for some HD pictures, and when I get those pictures to photoshop, I die repetitively because his lips are just cute and kissable with the 100% zoom in.
However, I am not good at making props. I enjoy his different poses and angles.

    10. It's a bit of a chore - but a necessary one if you want to share your doll activities on forums and the like. I don't mind taking the pictures so much but it's SUCH a faff getting them onto the computer, and cropping, and rotating, and colour balancing, and getting them onto Flickr, so they can be shared on forums etc.

    11. Okay for all of you who only have phone cameras, let me give you a tip. Phones have large images (ppi or pixels per inch but they have to have tiny shudder sizes thanks to how small the camera has to be. The shudder is how much light enters your camera. Because of this, to get a good shot in focus, you need as much light as possible, and from a bunch of different locations.

Lighting types I suggest sunlight or regular light for warm color dolls, and fluorescent for cold color dolls. Sometimes the light will be too hard, and your doll will look too dramatic for the shot. Try laying a tissue over whatever light is directly shining on their face, to diffuse it.

Now when it comes to layout, you either want your doll in the middle of the image, or you cut your screen in half, and have the doll in the middle of the half. This can go for up down left and right. Also, whatever part it is depends on what your focus is (the face, hands, or whatever the picture is of.)

Now for dolls especially I always say to one, try and find a fitting environment, and two, contrast the complication. This means giving a Lolita doll a lace background, etc... and the latter means that if your doll is a complicated design, give them a more simple background, and vice versa. If the doll is light colored, make the background darker to make the doll pop. Or if the doll is bright, make the background muted.

Now all of these rules can be broken of course, but they are good tips to keep in mind. Anyways i don't have any real bjds, but I make Ooak and love taking pictures of them, plus I take pictures of my friends dolls all the time, and I find it tons of fun. Especially going to museums and cool places to take photos. And already having good cameras and lighting tools, I use them all for photos.

    12. I absolutely love to take photos of my dolls. I've been photographing anime figures since 2014, I started collecting dolls in 2017 and I'd say that doll photography is not as easy as figurines (with all the posing and stuff). I have a long way to improve my skills, but it's so much fun and I love it!

    13. Thank you for the tips @Sarah Wolfe ! I love taking pictures of my dolls (and carrying them around to all kinds of places) but I usually use my phone (which is much easier to put the photos and Instagram, Flickr and so).

    14. I like taking photos of my BJDs, but I'm lazy so I only do it every once in a while.

    15. It's a chore that I'd rather not perform. Nowadays I have a lot of trouble due to my phone's age, but even before it went south it was always tough for me. I'd like to take a class on photography and buy a camera in the future because I'd like to change this! I have a lot of dolls and would like to start an album just to have some kind of record for them. I do love looking at photos of dolls and honestly love scrolling through the doll profiles here, so maybe one day I can add my own contribution and enjoy doing it. :)

    16. Photography is one of my favorite things about this hobby, and I've improved SO much compared to when I first started photographing my dolls. I have a nice DSLR camera now, use Lightroom to edit, and purchased backdrops to use, but those are my only tools. It's still very much just a fun hobby to enjoy, and not something I take super seriously. I grab a doll, set up quick, put on some music that fits the theme of my photoshoot, and fire away :)

    17. I'm not a photographer but I like to take some pics of my dolls before/after face-up.

    18. Yes, I greatly enjoy taking pictures of my dolls! But I don't strive to make "good" pictures, there are so many other talented people who do this so I actually prefer to take very amateurish photos of them. Makes fun nonetheless :XD:

    19. Taking pictures is possibly the only thing I don't like about the BJD hobby. I love how my dolls look in person, but I can't seem to make them look good in a photograph.

    20. I take photos of my dolls daily! I rotate them and bring 1 to work everyday but my pictures are not really good yet but i am still learning! :)
