Do you find larger dolls overwhelming?

Mar 23, 2017

    1. I thought I would get overwhelmed but actually SD size became my favorite XD! I really love the mature looking bodies. Also, the clothing style that I want for my dolls are mostly in SD sizes so that is also great. The only thing that I don't like about bigger dolls are that they are really heavy... LOL

    2. I guess it's about personal preference. I started the hobby with a 70 doll and most of my current dolls range from 58 to 70. I also have a few MSDs, but generally tend to play with them less. Bigger dolls are my thing and I don't feel like they're huge or hard to deal with. But they certainly take up a lot of space, that's the only downside for me.

    3. Kinda? Most of my dolls and figures are 1/4 sized and smaller. 1/4 is a comfortable size for me; not too heavy, easy to dress, and overall fairly easy to handle and find display space for.

I just got my 1/3 boy out for the first time in years because his 60cm body never really suited the head, so I stored him. I want to redo him and get him a new larger body, but my first thought was literally, "you're huge already, where am I going to put you?"

    4. I was quite overwhelmed when I got my first SD, especially as I'd gone from MSDs, but after like a week the shock wore off and I fell in love with the size lol

    5. I feel like it's something I could get used to, but honestly? I love being able to carry my doll in one hand, or dote over tiny details. I'm concerned about hurting the big ones on accident T^T But gosh they're so cool....

    6. Most of my dolls are SD13. I prefer that size, but the current trend of dolls that are 70cm or taller is overwhelming to me. My tallest SD was 62cm until I got an Iplehouse SID, which is 65cm. He is almost too tall for me. His body is heavy and feels cumbersome to handle. And to me he looks out of place with my other SDs.
The problem is, now it's getting hard to find mature looking SD size boys shorter than 70cm. Every time I find a sculpt I like, it turns out to be too tall. I'm in love with the sculpts from Soom and Pygmalion, but those boys are all 70cm and taller. :(

    7. My first doll was a Hound so I started big, lol. I had read a few places that it wasn’t a good idea to begin with a larger doll but there were more people saying go for what you want and I did!

I didn’t find him overwhelming though I was very surprised by the weight!

    8. Kind of. I have a 65cm Volks SD-17. He's very large and a bit heavy. I do wish he was smaller sometimes because he can be hard to take places. But at the same time, some sculpts simply don't come in a smaller size so, if you love a particular sculpt, you sometimes have to just deal with it.

    9. I am about to get my 1st 1/3 dollfie! She shld be home next week and i am getting anxious! I have 10 yosd now but 60 cm jump is really huge to me and i worry i might not be able to handle, and even tho i dont have a solid story abt my dolls, i treat them as my real life kids so an adult doll will be kinda strange to fit in. Just hope i can bond wif her, :)

    10. It seems like SD+ size dolls are something that you sort of have to acclimate yourself to, but the people who like them have a really strong attachment to them. It seems to me like they're somewhat easier to "bond" with, if that makes any sense lol

Admittedly I've avoided them because they're so much more expensive than MSDs, not to mention I really haven't seen a ton of larger sculpts I like. Doll Chateau Snowborn and Fergus are the only ones with enough personality to draw me in so far. I guess it just doesn't seem worth the price tag yet...

    11. I love all of the sizes; I have puki through SD17/Supergems. I think the only ones that feel 'too big' for me are the EIDs, though they are stunning, as are Mecha Angels. It depends on what you are doing with them though. Carrying them around, the big kids get heavy FAST. For sewing though, the big kids are a LOT easier to sew for than puki. With puki it comes down to lots of hand sewing since they are too small to machine most clothes.

    12. I really prefer the SD size over the smaller dolls. Some people are intimidated by their presence but I love how their large presence demands the attention of the room. IMO, when I walk into a room my eyes are gonna be drawn to them over a tiny bjd. That being said I have entertained the idea of owning smaller bjds, but only if they fit in with my SD sizes. Granted most yosd and msd tend to be cheaper in price than sd, but I just love them so much! Right now I own a 60cm doll and have 2 girls that are about 68cm on order, but I plan to go even bigger! I've even seen bjds that are 120 cm! As to whether I'll ever own a 120cm I'm not sure, but it's a possibility. And that's what I love most about this hobby is the endless possibilities.

    13. Once SDs were off putting as they seemed so tall, high enough to fall hard enough to break something so to speak, and also harder to display ( tinies fit so well on shelves ) ;)

I would not do taller than 70cm, and must admit for the last few years my Soom tinies have been my favourites with only a few SDs out ( mainly to prompt/remind me to sew their outfits ;) )

Gah.. just measured my DT 18/Soom Anubis head hybrid is 88cm to the tips of the ears @_@

    14. I'm much more comfortable with 1/4th scale and smaller. I do have one 1/3rd scale doll and she will probably end up being my only one. They are just too big for me and very hard to carry around.

    15. My first doll was a 60cm boy and now I have three SDs and they’re probably my favorite size just because it’s easy to sew clothes for them. One of my boys is 65cm and I’m currently looking to get a 72cm boy soon. The only downside is that they’re hard to find room for and some of them are really heavy. Otherwise they’re not too overwhelming for me.

    16. I think I'm in the rare minority who don't find them intimidating or overwhelming, all my planned dolls and floating heads are SD. I've handled them at meets and they're just so cuddly and I love them! I love my MSD boy but SD's are definitely my favourite size.

    17. I was amazed by the size of my first SD girl, but now it’s just the size I have. I like the more mature looking dolls, and it seems like 90% of MSD or smaller dolls are too baby looking for me.

    18. I felt like that when I first started the hobby. Larger dolls seemed harder to store and display, and I was used to fashion doll sizes. I didn't think I would like anything but MSD and tiny sized dolls, until I got an SD. It's now my favorite doll! It's easier to sew for a larger size, and it's easier to find clothes and wigs and stuff for SDs.

    19. I definitely prefer the smaller ones.I'd be pretty happy if there was a magical way to move everybody down a size. The two I started my current collection with were a 1/4 sized kid and a 1/3 sized adult, so my collection ended up being mostly kids since i liked the smaller ones better. I mostly keep them as static display pieces on shelves so I suppose it doesn't matter as much, but the 60+ cm dolls still seem pretty huge and unwieldy when I do have to handle them.

    20. I LOVE larger dolls. My first doll is 1/12 scale, and I got frustrated with her small size really quickly - she's my baby and I love her, but she's too small to sew detailed items for, and she's fragile as all get out. My former friend's MSD felt closer to the size I wanted, but still a bit... petite.
When I saw a Dollfie Dream in person for the first time, I knew for sure that 1/3 was the size for me. They don't feel nearly as fragile as smaller dolls, and you can achieve a ridiculous level of detail in what you sew/craft for them. I can't wait for my girl's body to get here!
