1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you hide your hobby from certain people?

Jun 9, 2014

    1. I can't say that I could ever hide my hobbies from anyone. I'm that friend or person people know who is very open and comfortable with who they are and what they're in to. And it's gotten to the point where when I say I'm into something, or like something that's unusual to them, they just shrug it off with a comment of "Yeah, you would be into that." or "Yeah, you're weird enough that it works." LOL :D

Eventually people get over what you like, because well, it's what YOU like. And if they can't accept it, then that's really too bad for them because they're missing out on a great hobby with many areas of artistic capability, and more importantly, some pretty amazing people.

    2. It seems so sad to hide your doll hobby from your "friends" of all people, maybe you need some new friends, just saying.

    3. I don't really bring it up really? I just don't want people who are getting to know me to assume anything about me. But recently I'll bring up to whoever and just explain I like being creative in non-"stereotypical" ways. I also mention I'm not hurting anyone.

    4. honestly, I hide my hobby from most everyone. I've gone as far as putting them away when I have company. I don't know why I feel so ashamed about it but, I dunno.

    5. I don't hide it on purpose but I'm the kind of person who doesn't just start talking about hobbies randomly. When I do most people are usually nice. My family knows, some of my friends are actually scared of dolls but they don't mind seeing my bjds :)

I don't even hide the cost. Once I asked my parents to buy me a Pullip, it was around 500$ and I actually told all my family that I got it and how much it costed. I believe they thought it didn't look that special but didn't really say anything. I show my aunt what I'm crafting for my dolls every time she visits (which is very often). Last time she even said how pretty and well made were her shoes, I think she's beginning to realize the level of detail put in these dolls and their accessories.

    6. Women I'm trying to date lol

    7. I don't think I hide so much as I just don't mention this hobby to anyone. Like if someone asked me I might tell them, but for the most part I don't bring it up. I could only imagine telling my family at this point, and I highly doubt I'd ever tell my friends. So in a way I do hide this hobby, but I'd rather do that than deal with my friends thinking I'm super weird. That's probably just my anxiety acting up though lol

    8. I don't open with the fact I collect dolls when meeting new people, but once I'm comfortable with someone I tend to tell them about my dolls since I tend to make a lot of things for them.

    9. I made a video response about BJDs on my YouTube page and it was clear that some people didn't like my video. Granted, I did make it on a bad night so my skills weren't up to par, but nonetheless, I probably won't be making anymore BJD related videos on my channel, unless they're unboxing videos, or musical slideshows.

    10. I used to hide it from others, but as I've gotten older, I see little point in masking who I am for the assumed benefit of others. A hobby is a hobby; Why should I care if someone takes issue with whatever makes me happy? :kitty2

    11. I don't hide it, but it also isn't something I tend to mention or discuss unless people ask or see my dolls etc. But otherwise, no shame - I love and take pride in all my hobbies, however weird and wonderful they may be :)

    12. Some people have said a few kinda-sorta rude things about my dolls but I don't hide them. I came home one day to see my dolls had been posed really ridiculously and hilariously by my in-laws so that's just fun xD I keep them out and whoever comes over see's them but I don't tend to chat about them with people who don't know I have them. I think my friends and Family already know I'm a weird one though ;)

    13. I do. It is not something I say in normal conversation and few know at all. I would rather enjoy them in isolation than have someone try and steal my joy. That is why I have here and FB groups.

    14. I don't hide my hobbies, I just don't talk about them to people who are not interested. If someone asks I'll answer, but thats it.

    15. Some people think dolls are creepy thanks to the "uncanny valley" (Uncanny valley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), while others just think that "dolls are for kids" or "dolls are for little girls". This is why people might think its "weird".
However if you love something embrace it, you can tell the world if you want but having a hobby doesn't mean you have to share it with everybody. Just do what makes you feel best! :)

    16. I don't "hide it" in a sense, but I am not able to talk about to some of my close friends as they are really freaked out about how they look. They still support me with what I do, but I take care not to mention it to those who would be bothered.

My friends who are okay with it get the full blast of my love for dolls though! :XD:

    17. Oh, absolutely not. I am old enough, and my home is quirky enough that to do so would be completely disingenuous. My dolls sit on the mantles, and stand on armoires, and just make themselves a part of the house. They are as much a part of my decor as my paintings or antiques.

I don't make it a point to talk of their prices or to draw attention to them, or to bring them up in conversation unless prompted, but they are really quite the opposite of hidden.

    18. I once went on a date with a guy who went off on a rant about how he'd gone out a girl who collected BJDs, and it was soooo weird o_0 Looking past the obvious faux pas of complaining about exes on a first date...it was really awkward!

I don't bring my BJDs up much in conversation, unless hobbies come up. Then I'll mention that I collect and customize dolls and leave it at that. Most folks just accept it. The older I get, the more wary I am of people who make faces at the interests of others. It just seems kind of juvenile.

    19. I hide my hobby to my working place... :P cuz they ask a lot about my hobby...

    20. Depends on the person. If I care about them enough to want to hear their opinion I'll bring it up at some point, but otherwise I don't talk about it. People are free to think what they want, positive or negative, but that doesn't necessarily mean i want to have to hear it.
