1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you include your floating heads in your doll count?

Jan 6, 2012

    1. I don't count my doll heads in any list. But I find that buying them gives me the joy of having the whole doll. I know some people find floating heads a worry.

    2. Yes! I have one one floating head now (my first) and I'm obsessed with finding a body for it. I had no idea how much energy I was going to expend on it since when I decided to buy her I thought, "it's cool, I just want the sculpt". But now I'm cursing myself. Sigh. I do feel better since I put her in a small jar and carry her around with that......but I can't figure out which body (she has a tiny neck size) and there's sooo many out there.....

And no, I don't count heads as a doll.

    3. I count mine as half a doll. If I added another, I suppose it would come out to a whole doll.
But I can't wait to get my floating head a body.

    4. I currently don't have any floating heads, but when I do have them, they frequently end up sharing bodies. I definitely count my heads as dolls.

    5. I do count my floating heads (well, down to "head" singular now, finally) among my doll count! But only the ones that are intended to become full actual dolls; I also have a floating practice head who is just that, and doesn't get counted. (The floating head is even represented in my signature, her name is in the set she belongs to, even though she isn't pictured currently.)

    6. I don't count my floating heads as full dolls. They get "floating head designation" and it actually drives me a little crazy to have them. I find having floating heads/having to body share is a very good way of figuring out which heads are your favourites and likely to stay.

I've recently re-homed my floating heads and I am happy to say I am floating head free! (until my big FL order comes in, yay events)

    7. A faceplate is a third! LOL!

At least five of my BJDs have alternate sleeping, dreaming or different expression heads that are complete with matching faceups. I don't count those as floating heads, since they do have bodies. I also have a head that I want to mod into an open-eye version of one of my characters, so even though he is unfinished, I'll consider him not to be floating.

But I have one head who doesn't have a character or a body, or any prospect of them at the moment, so I will technically consider him a floating head.

    8. I love floating heads. On my extremely long "to-do-list" is a special home/display for them. But again, as to the question, not on any official list. I used to have a sub-set paragraph for them on my DOA home page. I took that out. Maybe it is because I am a portrait artist, specializing in just close up faces.

      I tend to be a talking/typing head these days. Since I don't get much exercise -- guess I don't think of their need for it either. :) And I see them as beautiful, mysterious art...Even when they have a doll soul and/or I write stories for them, it can be independent of a total body in reality. {sorry, sort of going wide on the topic there}

    9. I might include them if I'm in the stages of planning the doll and they have a character and all. If they are just a blank event head that I got and there is no character waiting for them, no body in the plans of being ordered, then I probably won't count the head.

    10. I have only one floating head waiting for me to buy his body. The head was bought with a character in mind 'Medhi' a berber boy with lovely tan skin, dark eyes and wavy black bushy hair. I normally didn't count him as a 'doll' but seen that some people do, I might as well now! ;)

    11. The doll that's in my icon right now is a 'floating' head, but her name is Anthea and she shares a body with my Dragon Doll Xizi, Jiji. She's going to remain a floating head because the body that's perfect for her (Jiji's first gen sculpt) no longer exists from the company. And the head's original company body is a boy. I also want a sleeping head for my YoSD Sakuranbo, but that would be the same doll, so now, I'm really wondering, does one count a same doll sleeping head? O_o

I've often considered just keeping a cabinet of heads like the witch in Return to Oz. LOL!

    12. I currently have no floating heads...I have an incoming floating body though. XD;; When I did have a floating head I just had him as a practice head for face ups...And a Halloween prop.

    13. I don't. I mean, if I did, my doll count would be even more worrying to me than it is already D:. I guess it would be different in the case of heads waiting for a body. My floating heads aren't waiting for bodies. They are alternative heads for the same character - mostly there is one open-eyed and one dreaming head. If the head isn't its own character, it doesn't get counted.

That said... Lately I have felt tempted to buy a head just because I loved it or felt like I would like to try and give this particular head a face-up. I didn't have a character for it. I'm trying to resist that impulse though, because I have already shelled, oh, five more characters than originally planned and I own more than one version of some characters, so buying dolls just because they appeal to me seems like opening the flood gates :/. This is such a dangerous hobby XD...

    14. Siguni -- hear, hear! OR, I hear ya! I did open that flood gate. It's a tsunami!! I was kind of embarrassed by my total. So I hid my total heads-only. I AM planning on displaying bodyless dolls, even though I already know from experience with a past roommate, headless bodies and especially body less heads can REALLY creep out non-bjd lovers. Har, har... I don't know why I am so embarrassed to admit that I buy them also because I dream of giving them face ups and then see if the faces meet any one else's desires. Commissions are so stressful for me. AND I do them for money [people, animals, characters, dolls] i.e., I'm a portrait artist. I am seriously!! my own worst enemy with perfectionism and negative predicting. But back to the heads. I LOVE heads and am fascinated by every face I see. Have to watch my distracting habit of beginning to notice how the light falls on contours, and all kinds of details about the faces around me. ^^ ...honestly, I lost count a long time ago. But I don't collect just for my own characters. One of these days I will open the flood gates to let some of this flow in the other directions and start selling. er, trying to sell. We'll see how that goes, eventually.

    15. Hmm... I don't think I would count them, but I'm not entirely sure.

    16. Yes and no.
I've only bought one so far, Obitsu Haruka, to practice faceups on vinyl. I've also got a stained DD head waiting for treatment that belongs to a friend but she bought a replacement right away because the girl was a favorite so I think I just kind of inherited it for practice too. I don't count each separate Unoa FP as 'a doll' unless it has a dedicated body to itself....except 1, The Fayze, who snatches any handy 1/4 body as part of the character story so will likely remain in this state and never have a body of their own...I've made some hybrids and just kept the old heads but don't count those as dolls in my doll count.

    17. I include them, but I usually try to mention either that a lot of my heads share bodies, or that I'm counting 'characters' rather than full dolls.

Of course, counting 'characters' doesn't solve everything, because a couple of my characters have two heads (Migma, for example, who has both her regular head and her fanged head to represent the same character with different expressions). So sometimes my list changes depending on whether the question is about how many dolls (= unique sculpts = heads) I own, versus how many dolls (= characters) I own.

I complicate things more for myself, because I don't really have 'floating heads' and 'full dolls'. I have bodies, which are shared equally amongst many dolls. None of my bodies 'belongs' to any one head, which can make listing 'dolls' pretty convoluted for me :sweat

    18. To non-doll people, I'll say I have 10 dolls, but if they ask, or if they're doll owners themselves, I'll usually say 7 full dolls and 3 floating heads. Most of the time I say 10 rather than 7+3 simply because I keep forgetting how many floating heads I got (I forgot I got one a body, to bring the count down from 4 to 3).

    19. I count them all, even though some have to share body. Since I got them all faceup and plan to give character for each of them.
I don't think that I need to spent money to get body for each of them because I don't have space to keep them all
and I can't play all of them at once anyway.

    20. Yes I do include them because I do have a body then can share which means that is another character all together!

When people ask I usually give the count of my full dolls. If its other Dolly people I will tell them my full doll count plus the floating heads cuz they get it :D
