Do you like/care for your cheaper dolls less than your expensive ones?

Dec 28, 2015

    1. My most expensive doll cost $900 (and he was a limited edition too!) But he's my most neglected doll, and he often suffers the indignity of being bumped from his body because I've got a floating head that needs a parking spot.

    2. I've noticed I pay more attention to my less expensive doll. I'm less worried about messing something up with it, so I play with it a lot more than I do the expensive one that would be a royal pain to replace should the unspeakable happen.

    3. Nope. Not remotely. My most played-with and accessorized doll was about $280. I have dolls who cost far, far more than that, and they also get handled, modded, costumed, and so on.

    4. I never really factored the cost of a doll into the amount of playtime/handling it gets. That said - all of my dolls are about the same base price range so I don't know if I'd feel differently if I had a $3,000.00 base price bjd. The only dolls that I do handle differently are the ones with delicate features (like hands) and that have tattoos or blushing. I handle them more carefully because I can't repair the work.

    5. Once I own a doll, I don't really think about them in terms of what I paid for them. I am aware that some are harder to replace due to secondhand prices and rarity, but I only think of them as "my dolls" when I handle them and I like all of my dolls. I don't think I handle any of them more or less than the others or care for them any differently.

The only time I handle a doll differently is if it isn't my doll. Like, I tend to keep my hands off my GF's dolls if she's not around. I'd hate to be the one to hurt someone else's doll. Again it has nothing to do with money, just respect for other people and their feelings.

I have sold a couple dolls that I just didn't enjoy handling, but again, not a monetary consideration.

    6. How much I care for a doll has nothing to do with how much I paid for them. Expensive, rare, and limited dolls get handled all the time, they are some of my favorites and I'm always careful with my things. If I don't handle a doll as much as the others, I consider selling it if they are not bringing me the same enjoyment as my others.

    7. Nope. It's pretty much an "equal opportunity"-crew around here... Like idrysfynn, I simply tend to think of all of my dolls in terms of being part of *my* collection, which means they're going to be handled and maintained a certain way. Their individual cost doesn't really come into it. I will admit to being more reluctant to take some of them out of the house than others... But that has nothing to do with their expense. It's because they're either made of particularly fragile resins (My old tanned Delfs, for instance. I've seen enough cracked necks and fingers on tanned Delfs to suspect that their particular formula is more brittle than average, so I handle mine very carefully-), or they're sculpts that would be difficult or impossible to replace if something happened to them.

Those few "cabinet babies" aside, I take my Volks one-offs and Soom Limiteds out for pictures and tinkering just as often as I do my lower-priced dolls. None of them are treated carelessly. It's important to me that the standard of care I apply to my collection applies to all of them equally, because I'm just as picky about the cheaper ones as I am about my pricier dolls.

    8. Honestly, I like them all the same. I had a different variety with one or two that I really loved. I've slowly sold all the ones I didn't love as much as those two, and if new ones didn't live up to that, they've gone, too. About half my my dolls are secondhand, and I've gotten some good deals. So even though all the MSDs and all the Yos are about the same price new, I've played a wide variety of prices. But, they are all equally loved, and I don't have any at this point that wouldn't be very hard to let go.

    9. might be, but those most expansive dolls i have are all limited edition and purchased from others. why would i pay for that high price for dolls if i don't like them that much.

    10. My cheapest doll is played with as much as the more expensive ones. She is part of a family group so, even if she is a bad poser, I always find her something to do, whether it is talking to someone or reading a book, or just listening to a conversation. I have to make clothes for her as barely anybody cater for her so she is not forgotten. She is a pretty lilltle thing and a marvellous stander.

    11. For the most part, I don't even recall the prices of most of my dolls, other than my two most expensive ones (because they were big deals for me at the time to have saved enough to get them), so price just isn't on my radar when it comes to playing with them. Once they're mine, they're just mine, and they get similar attention/abuse. ;)

    12. I don't care about price, really. All of my dolls are dear to me and I don't treat them differently based on how much they've cost. Like @ahalfling, my dolls tend to take turns when it comes to being 'The Favorite'.

    13. I don`t care if doll is expensive or cheap, the only thing that matters when i buy a new doll is sculpt. I Have one resinsoul doll, luts and crobidoll and, well, they are getting the same amount of attention and i love them equally. But yes, it was less scary to do make-up for the first time on the resinsoul doll.

    14. do you care for or like your cheaper dolls less than your more expensive ones?

      No.

I don't see the price in them, I bought them for one reason and that reason is that I like them, period. My #1 doll is my first doll and he was very cheap compared to my latest doll and guess who I wouldn't mind selling or letting go? yes, my latest/expensive doll but I would never let go of my "cheap" first doll.

I also collect other dolls cheaper than BJDs and they make me equally happy (like Isuls, azone, obitsus etc). Money has nothing to do with caring or liking a doll.

    15. Well, I only have one doll as of right now, but the second & third are going to be on their way pretty soon. Back when I had multiples, I treated them all very well, but I obviously had favorites. It didn't tend to have any correlation with the amount of money I had spent on them, though.

    16. Price plays no factor when it comes to who gets the attention. I tend to cycle through who's the doll of the moment, and it doesn't matter what I paid for that particular doll, if that's who I want to focus on. Poseability issues, difficulty of dressing, or awkwardness of photographing are what keeps some of the resin darlings sitting on the second row. I'm much more likely to play with a doll that is fun to play with, and it doesn't matter if it cost only $100 or $1000. The dolls I have are here because they are wanted here, not because of how much they cost. I'm every bit as careful with all of them too.

    17. So far price has not really played a part. It seems to spend more on my mood and if I have bought new clothes or accessories recently. That said, my favourite at the moment is my resin soul mei because she can get away with the widest number of looks and I have most clothes and wigs for her. She is one of my cheaper girls.

    18. I think money is always a factor. Maybe a lot in the subcontius. The more expensive dolls tent to pose better than the cheap ones which is a plus. But with the cheaper ones, Im less worried that I break it. As I do my own face ups, that is less of a factor for me. But yeah, that is what I think (if it makes any sense in my broken English XD)

    19. I don't feel like price makes much of a difference in how I interact with my collection. Every doll I have, I purchased because I liked them and wanted to own them. There are some I play with more because they might be easier to pose or they might fit in a larger variety of outfits- but that has nothing to do with their price. My most spoiled piece of resin was less than 400 dollars because I bought his body 2nd hand. That's less than half the price of my most expensive doll. But he poses like a champ, can wear any outfit, and always looks great in photos. So, price tag doesn't equal the amount of affection, that's for sure.

    20. I don't see why the price of the doll would make any difference. Presumably no matter the cost, the doll was purchased for the same reason: we liked it and wanted it. Once you've saved up however much it took and have the doll, the cost just doesn't seem that important anymore from my perspective.

Looking over at my doll shelf, I smile just as much at my Bobobies as my new Iplehouse. :)
