1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you like the idea of "limited" dolls?

Jul 2, 2009

    1. Hurrah, another person who shares my waiting fetish! XD Just kidding.

Most of the high-ticket items I own are due to researching, waiting, and buying at the right time. You're right, all the preparation pays off in my opinion.

    2. Yes, it certainly does. The whole reason I ended up with only limiteds is because I love the planning and plotting, the hunting and pining when you have to wait a bit longer. Sure, there are plenty of standards I love, but buying them straight from the company isn't gratifying enough.

I love to hunt for a limited and to get him for the best price possible. I mean, I waited three years to buy a Williams, simply because I couldn't get an offer I was happy with. Finally I have him!
Getting a doll after waiting for such a long time... that feeling is priceless and worth all the trouble.

EDIT: Damn, I sound like a junky ;p.

    3. Nah, if you were a junkie you'd want the doll RIGHT NOW or you'd suffer the horrible cold sweats and entitlement fever ;)

    4. I can be patient and wait for years to save for something or hunt down the perfect whatever, but forget that patience once I've actually paid for the item. Then I become the whiniest creature ever.

The two month wait for my Michele? It's breaking me.

    5. lol you sound like me!! XD

as far as limiteds go, i dont have feelings for or against them. i can see their appeal, to have something not a lot of people have...i can see why companies do them...its probably fun for them and they get some extra monies out of us...but will i ever buy a limited doll because its limited? no.

of the three i own, two of them matched their character perfectly. better than any other doll that will ever be made, therefor i had to own. the other one was me fangirling over another owners doll. when she put him up for sale i HAD to bring him home with me! XD

im currently saving for another one. technically i could buy the standard version, but so far i love the faceup and outfit this one comes with so why not get the whole package? besides he's an easy one to get as long as they dont run out before i has the money...no lotteries or anything like that. theyd better not run out! *shakefist*

    6. Hahaha, that reminds me of my FCS I got while in Japan. I think it was around 6 months that I had to wait, and I was buying little MSD clothes for him throughout that entire time because I kept thinking about him! XD

Same here, but five years for an Isao Nanjou version 2 on my end. At first, I thought I'd be happy with just the version 2 clothes, but I was wrong. XD

    7. Limited dolls? Sure. Limited special faceups? Of course! Limited wigs, shoes, outfits and accessories? Doesn't bother me. BUT- Limited head sculpts? No.

A good example of that is Soom; it'd be nice if they offered those heads again- the people who bought them the first time would have those special limited bodies, skin tones, wigs, eyes, accessories, outfits and faceups. Plus, pride in having one of those special limited, first run dolls.

I love Iplehouse, Fairyland, and others for offering regular versions of those limited dolls. They're still going to make lots of money from people scrambling over each other for those limited editions, in addition to all the money they'll make from selling a regular edition of that limited sculpt for years afterwards.
It's not like a company makes any profit from the often insane aftermarket prices.

It may take a little more time for them to sell out- but that means they're not frantically attempting to fill all of the orders, and having a huge backlog of orders. There's also the fact that a lot of customers don't want to order during these events (unless there's some incentive), because of that crazy backlog- they know it'll take a lot longer for then normal to get their orders!

Like a lot of others, I have set characters in mind, and strive to find that PERFECT head sculpt that just screams, 'ME!' When I find one that would be great, but is a limited sculpt, it makes me quite frustrated.

I've got a limited sculpt, a Breakaway. Sure I feel it's sort of neat that I have a head sculpt that is somewhat rare, not many of them exist in the world- but it also makes me scared to do anything with it! If I screw up somehow, how am I supposed to replace it?

    8. Heck yes I like limiteds! They always look better than the basic ones, and full sets tend to be available. I love Soom's limited dolls.

That being said, I'll probably never be able to afford one.

    9. in a sense, yes. 'Limited' anything ensures buyers interest and makes people JUMP for it. ;D
Limited = More sales, more profits.

BUT. BJDs are limited enough. Seriously. They are few and far between, and it's already rare enough to see one of a particular company in your area. A limited BJD is going to be rare of the rare.
Eg. Hasbro makes a few thousand of a toy and call it Limited.
A BJD company make 30 dolls to be sold worldwide.
      -its absurd. really.

    10. Well, considering how small this hobby really is, I don't think it is that absurd. Millions of people buy hasbro toys, only a couple of thousand collect BJD's. So releasing a Breakaway and make a 1000 copies of it... that's not limited, it's an unlimited supply in this hobby. I doubt that there are that many CP El's out there, and he's the most popular doll we know.

    11. I've seen limited editions of 100 or 200 being sold out in minutes, so the BJD world is not that small, but I admit that "click war sales" are only for the truly popular molds. A lot of limited editions released a year or more ago are still for sale.

    12. Limiteds are cool! You get to see all this amazing stuff that the company really busted their butt to make, and even though I don't have any dolls that you could only get for a limited period and can't buy as a basic, I think they're awesome! It's a bummer that you can't always afford them, but I'm impulsive and it's best for me that they come with a big price tag...:sweat Then I'll stay away and ogle happily from afar.

I don't mean to be mean, but I hate that sense of entitlement that says, "How dare the company release a doll I want but can't afford! How dare they make it limited so they can make some money and promote themselves!" :| Honestly? As everyone has been saying, life isn't fair, and there are much more potent injustices in the world than not getting a Hati or whatever. Chill. It'll hit the MP eventually, and if you want it that much, you'll be willing to pay the price.

    13. i asked about a limited doll once...the make up was so great but I was suspicious, if it was purchased, it's actually a blank doll with the same sculpt as those regular ones...and yes, it's blank and it's the same sculpt...only skin tone that is different...and with some bonuses like outfit and other furniture/toys, some additional hands

rather than purchasing limited, i'd rather purchase regular doll and make it limited myself if i want to....

    14. I like the concept of limiteds. I think it's good for business and keeps companies in a mode of creativity where they feel it's alright to take a few risks.

      But...

I like the limiteds from Soom or Lati where there are ordering periods from which I can buy dolls. And anyone can buy dolls regardless of location. I dislike limiteds that are only for events, for a particular country or for a particular area. I think these kinds of limiteds encourage scalping. It's one thing to pay more for a doll someone couldn't afford at the time or didn't bother ordering. I think it's different to not have the ability to even have the option of choosing the doll due to other kinds of limitations. As others have mentioned it encourages elitism (unintentionally in many cases). I don't even want those kinds of limiteds in my collection because I would feel guilty for having them. I respect those collectors who will pay more and will get those dolls and will support their choice. I even like many of them and enjoy the pictures. But, for me, I can't do it.

To be honest, the only reason I have Volks dolls is because I live in Japan. Both my girls are FCS because I thought it was VERY cool to go in, choose my dolls, sit and compare and really create the doll I wanted. For me, it was about choice, accessibility and the real-life ordering option (which I had never done before while collecting dolls). If I lived anywhere else where I didn't have these options I wouldn't have Volks dolls in my collection. If a company opened up with an on-line FCS service available during particular times that would be my personal ideal, even if it was for one week per year. I love having choices and could care less about the limited factor or the hunt. For me, it's really about the doll and being creative.

    15. I think LE dolls is exiting. It`s something really cool about owning Le. I have a limited Dollmore Youth Eve. And she is so special to me. And I don`t care if i miss out on the coolest of em I`ve ever seen. Because I know that I simply can`t have every single doll I fall for. So if I find out it would have been cool to get a nother limited one, I would save up money and then search around and wait for that perfect doll to appear. Then buy it.

    17. Most all of my dolls are limiteds. But I don't necessarily like the idea of limiteds. I wouldn't mind if all dolls were available for as long as people wanted to buy them. However, I guess the companies like doing limiteds (they don't have to worry about keeping a doll in production, I guess). So that's just the way it goes.

I don't like limiteds just because they are rare. I don't care about that at all. It doesn't matter what other dolls are out there-- I only care about what I buy and what I have, and like anyone, it's easier if a doll isn't limited and I could get it whenever I wished, instead of having to buy quickly.

I do rather wish there was no such thing as limiteds... but not if the dolls I like aren't going to be produced!!! If limited sales periods are what I have to put up with to get the dolls I like, then so be it!

If people wish to be able to get ahold of limiteds, it'd be wise of them to have money saved up just in case something like that comes along. I know it's hard to do, but it's possible. That way they will be able to get the doll they really want when it becomes available. (That's what I do, anyway... try to save up ahead of time.)

    18. I'm pretty sure if you email luts and send them the broken parts they will replace it. Well at least thats what Volks does :>

    19. I like the idea of limited dolls but there will be a price hike.
Some will buy them and sell in a high price.:(

    20. I have some limiteds, but thats not the reason I got them. I paid a lot of money for a long layaway for my Volks black cat, but that was because I knew he was what I wanted :3. (cat freak). Same for my Souldoll limited. The way the companies portray them, certain moulds and clothing really attracts me.

I would love a SOOM MD, I'm trying to get a Glati right now. But again, not to have the "bragging rights" of owning them (not saying anyone is like that here ^^;) just because they are such wonderful sculpts!!
