Do you like the idea of "limited" dolls?

Jul 2, 2009

    1. Yes,i like that idea,becouse limited dolls have to be different from basic dolls (not like dollmore does,or Iplehouse).I like Soom limited dolls,they are awsome and realy LIMITED:D

    2. I like this idea!

    3. No as I think it's just a way for the company to produce panic buying in people by saying something is 'limited' and part of the fun of this hobby is seeing what other people have done with their dolls. And nobody is gonna do anything to a limited doll as they're so much money and only a few actually exists. Plus I can't afford them :sweat

    4. Well,i thinck that limited doll is good-for people?who own tham.THeya re kinda proud owners of doll,that is sold out.

      But in other way,its not realy very good,becosue this dolls are ver expensive and not verybody can afford to buy tham

    5. It's good if other people can actually tell them apart from the normal dolls. It also gives the owner a sense of fulfillment that he/she was able to own a doll that is different from the others. I just wish companies won't charge such high prices for them ><

    6. I'm quite a big fan of limited dolls, and it certainly gives me a thrill trying to get hold them. Though i'll admit, it does annoy me a little how hard to come by, or just how expensive some of them can be, but thats just life I guess. Its my own fault for not collecting dolls sooner XD.

      As for limiteds coming out, and not being able to afford them, not yet been a problem for me. I just break into my savings for a house deposit/car (no idea what I'm actually saving for) and then replace the money by saving more over the next few months. Of course, when I actually spend my savings, this will be when my dream doll comes out, just to spite me for thinking I am so prepared...

    7. Yes, I like it, it makes things a lot more interesting. I bet some dolls, if they weren't limited, would become too numerous. It's good because it sort of forces some variety into the system. XD;

      "Fairness" is not important since it's just a hobby/game. If you really want a limited doll, you will try harder to get it. If you don't get it though, you won't die, and there are many other dolls you could get.

      edit: I originally answered this having never met a limited doll that I really wanted, and I kind of wondered at the time if my answer would have been different. However I recently came across the Domuya Life Project dolls and become really interested in the dolls and the project... and while I don't think I'll be able to buy one before they all go out of stock, I think I still like the idea of limiteds. It really does make the system more interesting. I've been realizing that I really enjoy online games with limited items in them (like Subeta) even if I can't get them all. To me it seems like everything becomes more exciting with variety and limits. :3 Isn't it cool to know those dolls are out there and to see them from time to time, even if you can't OWN one? If everything is obtainable and easy, it gets so boring.

    8. i like limited dolls, if i can get one. but i feel like i could be missing out or wonder when will i ever have another chance to have that doll haha.

    9. Limited dolls make me crazy! I wish I could afford them xD I hate that by the time I have the money to buy them, they're either sold out or not selling them anymore T~T If I could buy on a whim, I'd totally adore them. I love that they come with unique details that aren't there in the basic ones, or they're never going to have that mold again.

    10. I like and dislike the limited dolls. I like them because they are by far the best examples of art in the doll world and dislike them because I will never have a chance at one.

      But life is not fair sometimes and I am for the most part content with just wishing.

    11. I don't really care about the limited dolls. If I wanted something "unique" I would buy a doll I like with no face up and do something with it myself, and believe me, it will be more unique than any limited run.

      But then, I am a model maker with over 21 years experience, so it would not be a problem for me, just a learning curve as I find out the ways of working with BJDs as opposed to my other modelling projects. I am tempted to buy a couple of 27cm heads in resin just to practice on...

      Phil.

    12. I'm a huge sucker for exclusivity and limited items in any of my hobbies. It completely works in the way the company wants it to on me psychologically, that feeling of having something special and finite in its existence. Yeah, I'm gonna be paying an arm and a leg to be a part of that but it's something I find very worthwhile of my money.

      I probably also like it because it's not fair at all - works just fine for me.

    13. In a way, I -love- limited dolls and the idea of them.
      On the other hand, they bug the crap out of me >_<;

      I love them because they're something that won't be around forever, and they more than not usually have a little more creativity added to them for some extra flair. I would give anything to own a Limited SOOM doll or the SoulDoll Tarot Lev <3

      But, I hate them because... they're limited =___=; I know many people do, but I for one don't have the funds to impulsively buy an amazing sculpt that comes out of nowhere and is only available for a few weeks, if not shorter.
      Where do people get this money and where can I get it? TAT;;

    14. I have never heard of anyone who could do that. Most people have set money aside so that, if a doll is released they must have, they can buy it. Others, like me, ignore the ordering period and save up until they have enough money to buy that doll in the marketplace.

      It's not like people who own limiteds have a money tree in their backyard. They are not more fortunate than others, they just planned their doll-spendings differently.

    15. There are both positive and negative sides to this.
      First of all the idea of making a ready doll with often something new or special is great as such. This is the main reason why I'm always looking forward to new limited dolls. It's interesting to see what the company has invented this time - is it vampire fangs, hooved legs, horns or something else. Often these features are something that the basic dolls rarely/ never have and it gives the possibility to buy a doll with such features.
      Of course, one thing that could be seen as an advantage of limited dolls is that not so many people have one. This might be important for some, who want their dolls to be remarkably special. Personally I think, that basic dolls might often be more individual looking, since limited dolls are often 'ready dolls' - with everything needed and the owner might not change anything, while with basic dolls owners often choose different wigs, face ups. etc.

      What I find as a drawback of limited dolls is for example the fact, that they are tools for companies to get their money income up in a short time. People go into a buying hysteria when they see a gorgeous limited doll, and make descissions fast ending up buying a doll, which they might've not bought if they had thought about it longer. Limited dolls are also more expensive than basic ones. Basically the company has a good reason to ask a bit more for their dolls - making it limited - what could be a better option?

      Over all, I think limited dolls are interesting as long as you keep your mind calm.

    16. For the most part I do like them. It's always nice to own or have a chance to own a limited or rare doll. With most there is usually a chance to find them later in the marketplace or online if you really want them

      An example of limiteds I don't like are cases where only 1 or 2 of the dolls were ever made. FOr example, Dream of Doll's Collection Black Luke, he was only sold at an event in Hong Kong. If there were maybe 20 or so of him, then we may have achance to see the doll on DOA or maybe obtain him for the right price, but not in a case liek that. People pine over something most cannot have.

      So if it is limited time or at least a fair number of limited sculpts then I think they are fine and even sometimes more fun. (it's all in the hunt!) I agree with Alcarina on the whole buying frenzy as well, just look at everyone who's been 'soomed'! ^^

    17. Very, VERY true. I don't earn much at my job at all, but if I really want a doll that happens to be limited, and it's in my budget to do so, I'll get myself into a layaway program and save up each month. It's not luck, it's not that I'm rolling in money (not even kind of close), it's begging for extra work and not spending so much on other extras. If you really want it, you'll either take that layaway option, get into a split and buy other parts one at a time, or you skip it and start saving for when someone realizes it's not what they wanted. And if there aren't any limiteds you want at the time, maybe you save anyway, for that one occasion when something comes out that's only available for whatever period of time.

      Very few people in this hobby, if any, are super high class, oil baron, hotel owning heirs and heiresses who can throw away money. Most of us are minimum wage earning folk who are willing to budget in order to get what they really like. This goes for limiteds, unlimiteds, and really anything in this world.

      If you really want something, you'll work hard for it and find a way; otherwise, you don't really want it.

    18. Limited dolls are very appealing - even if I don't own one! I just think it's a great/cool idea, and makes me want to do better with my doll money, that way next time I see a limited that I love, I will have the money. :goldstar

    19. Education => good job => more money.
      Stay in school, kids!

    20. i don't like the idea. Maybe this is the one you really want and then you find out it's gone. They should just up the prices. I mean why make the best thing and make them perfect when you should be putting that much effort into all of the dolls you are selling?? But then again, you may find your love is not a limited doll!
