Do you like the idea of "limited" dolls?

Jul 2, 2009

    1. I like the idea of a limited doll, but I really hate the down side of it all. Like if I see a limited doll I really want but I missed it. I won't be able to get it, unless it's second hand from someone else. And there's the chance of some people selling it for a high price too. =(

    2. I don't =[. Not everyone would have enough money to brough the doll they really like as it is limited.

    3. I agree, I don't like. :(
Especially because of these Sui/Souseiseki SD Volks!!! They're way toooooo expensive >_________<

    4. Like most people say there are clearly positives and negatives to the limited dolls depending on your view point. If you're not exactly rich, they seem very out of reach. If you're saving for a specific doll and get roped into an impulse buy then you have to start all over again with saving. But to own and cherish a limited doll provided everything works is wonderful in it's own aspect.

I have no intention of getting a limited doll right now or in my foreseeable future, but that's not to say there won't be one that jumps out at me.

    5. I like the idea of a limited doll. I like that I can get everything I need in one shot.

    6. I think roughly half of my dolls are limited in some way. I have 5 fullset limited, though some haven't arrived yet. However, personally, I don't like the idea of limiteds. Especially limiteds limited to really tiny numbers rather than a specific time period. It's distressing to wake up at a weird time (like 4 AM for my last one) and be instantly under pressure to buy it quickly before it sells out. I was able to get the doll (Crobidoll LE5 Cinderella Tei), but if I hadn't, I would have been too annoyed to go back to sleep. So, in those instances, I can agree that it's unfair. Or if someone's at work when the sale begins and they don't even have a chance at getting the doll because it sold out in seconds.

Also, I'm much more likely to buy a doll if it's limited, even if I like it less than another doll that's not limited, since I can buy the unlimited doll anytime. This is not good for my bank account. At least I haven't been "Soomed" yet...

    7. No! I feel like I've come into this hobby too late there are so many sold out limited dolls it makes me sad. I think full sets can be limited but the basic doll should be unlimited at least. From what I hear when limiteds go on sale it's a mad clicking war and many people lose out, I don't like that.

    8. I have contradictory thoughts on this... While they give some emotion -you know, having something 'special' or 'unique' in a certain way-, they're certainly unfair. Most of us don't have the means to buy a doll a month, and if it's a limited edition, it's even worse. But if I had to choose, I'd say I don't like limiteds because one who cannot afford them at the moment will have to pay the high amounts they're resold for at the second-hand marketplace.

    9. I can see the idea of limited 'sets', with the special outfits and accessories. But right now I'm in a panic because my next doll (I dearly hope!) is a 100 run limited. I'm so afraid he'll sell out before I can justify the purchase. If there were a time limit on the sale, I'd have to blow the budget and just get him. It just strikes me as odd that companies would limit a head mold (unless the actual mold broke, I've been seeing a lot of that lately in the Korean companies). Body molds can be improved on, yes, and upgrade all the time lately, but why limit heads? And I know people who have a hard time selling limited edition dolls after a few years because something isn't available for the doll any more. On the other hand, isn't the constantly changing availability what makes the BJD hobby more intriguing? But no, I don't like the limited edition idea for the dolls themselves. It's cruel!

    10. Definitely positive and negative feelings about it. I like the feeling of having something special, but price certainly makes it difficult especially since I'm a very frugal person to begin with. Paying extra just because something is limited takes away the joy of owning said doll.

    11. I don't like limited editions. I will get them if I really love them and can pay them, but it doesn't make me feel 'special' in any positive way to own something that very few people have. I don't see the perks.

But to each his own, I suppose a lot of people do get a kick out of being able to secure a very special limited edition doll. And some people like the idea of owning something exclusive.

I only see the down side of it. If I really love a doll, and it's limited, I either have to resign myself to never having it, or I'll have to deal with the stress of 'needing' to get the money together before it's too late... I don't like that kind of pressure, I prefer slowly saving up for a doll and then having a long period of anticipation while I wait for it to arrive - without stress.

    12. There will always be that feeling of 'I came into the hobby too late and I missed the doll of my dreams!', always. We're not born knowing about the dolls or the hobby, and because of that we are going to join the hobby at a point where there have been dolls released and sold out before we even knew they existed... but at the same time, you can't blame yourself for timing, and you can't blame the companies for not anticipating your interest ;)

Technically, I own four limited dolls.
      • My SDC Kurt was bought direct from Volks - entirely a fluke, I found out about him years after he was released and it was only because he was unpopular he remained on sale! He might not have been special to everyone, but I was special to me, so I bought him.
      • SDC Kurenai was a doll from the marketplace who happened to be in the UK and looked like she needed a home and some TLC.
      • My YoSD Yuh came about because of a trade, but I never anticipated getting a Yuh because they're normally YoTenshis which are relatively rarely released.
      • My Inkling is technically a limited because currently there isn't an open order for these dolls in the pipeline, but there could always be in the future.

I don't cruise around looking for limiteds and I don't feel that my limiteds make me 'special' in any way. I genuinely believe that if there's a doll that truly captures your heart and imagination, you'll do anything to get that doll, come hell or high water. If SDC Kurt hadn't been on Volks' website still, I'd have saved and bought him somewhere, somehow, he was that important to me. He wouldn't be less important to me if he was a standard model doll.

Don't underestimate the chance of re-releases either, Volks frequently re-releases as does Soom, and Iplehouse has started to make standard models of dolls first released as limited editions. Companies aren't daft, they want to make money, not make you curse them ;) If there is significant demand for a sculpt and resales are going into the $1000+ region, companies are going to sit up and take notice because that money is going into the pockets of private collectors, not theirs.

With Volks though, there is always the chance that they may re-release the dolls at a later date. While they don't own the copyright for the characters Suiseiseki/Souseiseki, they do own the copyright on the sculpts. It's unlikely they'll ever be standard models, but don't rule out the chance that they could be FCS option heads one day.

There is also YoTenshi Mamu, who is basically a baby version of the Suiseiseki/Souseiseki head. :)

    13. Personally I do not own one, and possibly never will, but I really do like them. It's easy to very quickly get used to seeing common doll a and common doll b . Even being customized they do have a sameness to them. Then, suddenly, someone pulls out a limited and it just makes everything exciting for a moment. If limiteds were done away with and all dolls were easily obtained a bit of the thrill of the hobby would be gone.

      Does that make any sense?

    14. I Particularly dont like the idea of limited dolls because almost every single doll i want i missed out on because they were limited and i seem to love the limited dolls the most. i think they should make the limited dolls time frame much longer then what they give you a month or less. i think they should at least extend it to a few months to a year so people who love them have a chance to get them as well.

    15. Alas, the first doll I ever saw that I really wanted (Volks Tae--the Taisho schoolgirl one. Her counterpart Minoru also was wonderful) was a limited edition and I'm not sure I could afford one even if I tracked it down. So I'm trying to keep my eyes on the standards and not get caught up in the Limited edition mania. We'll see how long that lasts.

    16. i love limited dolls. they are always a little cooler than the normal release. i just hate not being able to afford them :D

    17. For the most part I like limiteds, I don't own any, but I like them. It lets the companies explore different looks, or skin tones, or complicated parts that they couldn't do with a basic doll because it would either be too hard or too risky. So far there's only been one limited that I really wanted, and when it came down to it I passed on her.
I don't have much to say on the money aspect of the limiteds, I'm in a very lucky position right now where if I really wanted a doll I could get it quiet easily (I can't go buying every doll I want, but if I really wanted one I could make it happen).

That said, I don't really care for the outfit, wig, faceup kind of limiteds. One of my favorite aspects of this hobby is the customization, so when I see someone who won't change anything about their doll for fear of ruining that perfect limited fullset, I tend to just sigh and move on. I'm not saying anything is wrong with that, of course not, if that limited happens to be exactly what the person wanted why would they change anything. I just tend to think that the fear of touching a limited also tends to limit creativity and since that's my favorite part of the hobby it just doesn't appeal to me.
I think it all comes down to where in the hobby you fall, there are collectors and customizers (and a million people who fall somewhere in between), I'm definatly on the customizer side, so there probbally won't be many limiteds in my future.

(I tried to be very careful wording this, I hope I haven't insulted anyone:sweat)

    18. Hi! Please don't take offense to any of this v.v;

      I DISLIKE:

SOOM's way of doing things. Why? Because I was soomed twice this month. One doll I bought, the other doll I've been visiting every day, looking at her...longing to buy her, having enough room on my credit card to buy her, but knowing I don't have a character for her. It's so hard to resist her, and worst part? I don't really have a lot time to think about it.

Limited Edition dolls that are released with "ONLY 10 AVAILABLE WORLD WIDE" because I sometimes feel they cause some people [including myself] to act on impulse. Like, "ONLY TEN?! OMG, MUST BUY NOW OR I'LL MISS IT!" this happened to me with HZ. And, consequently, I bought my LE Fei. Low and behond, two months later, he is STILL available. So I put 1100 on my credit card when I could have just saved up for him. Granted, I was on the phone with a lot of different friends asking them for their opinions first before making any purchases. [My friends really help me out when it comes to doll decision making, they've read my chapters in my book so far, so they're good judges about which dolls can fit my characters.]

The fact that I missed out on SoulDolls gargoyles. He was so perfect for one of my characters but I just plain didn't have enough after I bought my HZ LE. :...( and how, [with me] this situation ALWAYS happens: two LE dolls are released that I want at the same time.

      I LIKE:

How original a lot [not all] of the LE dolls are. I don't WANT every single LE doll out there. But I certainly LOVE looking at a lot of them. A lot of them are so beautiful, and I can tell a lot of thought went into them.

The idea of owning a LE. I think there's a bragging factor [I know that sounds HORRIBLE and obnoxious], but it's kind of like...I like being able to say, "Well, I have this doll...and there's only 10 of him out there."

To touch upon the idea of "not ruining the face up" because of the fact that it's LE...no. My LE Fei is getting pierced and tattooed, limited or not. But that's also me. So is my Idealian, he's getting painted as well. But that's me. I don't really buy dolls because they're limited; but if a limited doll catches my eye and can shell a character of mine perfectly...I will buy it, and it will get the mods I want it to have. ;)

    19. I like the idea of limited dolls. Companies make something unique and but effort for them.
But what that I don't like is some dolls are hard to get or they are just too expansive. Like one doll what I would like to buy but it take year to get money for that.

    20. I like the fact that there are a select few of them, that way if you have one it's kind of special. But then again, if you miss out on one you really like you might not ever get it because they aren't made any more DX
