Do you like the idea of "limited" dolls?

Jul 2, 2009

    1. I'd have to say I'm indecisive on the subject. On one hand, you have a limited edition doll; a rare trophy as you will. And most of the time, limited edition dolls are worth the money with their sculpt, clothes, etc. But the down side IMO is the interactivity you can have with the doll. I'd be afraid to handle it too much and possibly mess up the faceup or the clothes. So the only thing I could do is just put it up for display. I would feel sorry for it honestly.

    2. It'd be nice, I suppose, if companies would do re-releases of dolls so that way if some of us can't afford the doll right away then we can wait for them to come around again.

    3. Horses for courses I guess.
There was a fab new doll in the Dreaming Doll line that was limited and kept flashing up when I was looking for my first doll. And sure, if I'd had the cash, well, maybe ;-)
But the beauty of it is that it wasn't excatly the doll I was looking for and whilst I could appreciate the extra time and attention to detail that had gone into it, I didn't have to beat myself up for not being able to afford it. The beauty of this kind of doll collecting is that there are always more expensive models out there and most likely cheaper too so you either save up in advance and wait for the ultimate doll combo to come out or you just be happy with what you've got.

I've got my eyes on a Luts girl and if I ever won the lottery......

    4. Yes I do like the idea of limited dolls. It is the essence of customization because most people want a doll that they can say is their own.

    5. I do think the limited dolls are beautiful so I'm glad they are around. There are companies where face up, wig and outfits are optional and they even do lay away if you ask them to. Yes it feels a bit unfair if this is not offered. I try to save up in advance so the funds are there before the dolls shows up. But there will always be dolls we miss out on, there are so many to begin with. S no worries one you might like even better is just around the corner.

    6. I don't mind limited dolls. I know that I'll never be able to afford one unless I some how win the lottery or the lottery or a jackpot at the casino, but I like looking at them. For me, they inspire me to create characters that I can base of their designs. They also have very nice faceups which I can use as reference when I do my own. I personally like how Iplehouse also sell's their dolls as basic dolls, because even if you cant afford the limited edition and really love the sculpt there is still a chance you can buy it.

The only thing I think that would set me off from buying them is that they seem to already have their own character. I wouldn't change their clothes or faceups or anything because they were made to look a certain way, so i don't think i could be as creative with a limited doll, than going out and buying my own blank doll and creating a character for it, which is one of the main reasons I'm attracted this hobby

    7. i love limited doll's because there's something special about them , but most of them is the face-up :)

though i wish everyone can have the dolls they love without have to be nervous of the 'limited' words

    8. I'm pretty much indifferent to them.
A limited doll has yet to raise the 'OMG! MUST HAVE' geeling within me so, but generally I like looking at most for inspirations and ideas. I do however sometimes regret not getting into the hobby earlier along with having the money for it. There are quite a few clothes and stuff I would have loved to have, but will be unable too unless someone happens to sell it for a price I'm willing to pay it and someone else isn't faster than I. ;P

    9. I think limiteds are an important part of the hobby. Doll makers need a source of income throughout the year, not just around holidays or whenever the natural buying times are. Limiteds are an easy way for them to 'force' customers to buy at other times of year, or to buy things they wouldn't normally buy. Limiteds are also a great way to make sure customers are checking the website regularly, instead of only when they are in the market for a doll, because you never know when the perfect doll will turn up as a limited and you don't want to miss it. Finally, Limiteds force customers to buy from the doll maker, instead of buying second hand dolls more cheaply. Companies don't make any profit on after market sales, so they need incentives to make sure customers just aren't circulating the same dolls around to each other in the second hand market. Buying a Limited doll, something that may not be available second hand or will probably be just as expensive, is a great way to do that.

All that being said, I don't go out of my way to buy limiteds but I don't ignore them either. If a sold out limited was perfect for a doll concept of mine, I would save the way I would for any other doll, the only difference would be that I would stalk the marketplace and auctions until the doll showed up.

    10. I like the idea of limited. I mean, it's sad that you miss out on some, sure, but imagine actually getting one limited. I like the idea of 'I am one of the few who have this one'. It feels a little more special, dunno. <:

    11. I also like the idea of limited dolls even though it`s not necessary for me to have one.

    12. i both love and hate the idea. why yes it cool to says u own something now a lot of people have (like in my case Marcus a Dollmore: Kid - Sweet Wind Memory - Torrie L40) i know for a fact nobody in my state of FL as her and she very special one kind. at the same time i do hate it because i want a Rozen Maiden but I could spend $5000 on one so i missed out and it suck. but i look at it this way. sometime there r more import things in the world then BDJ (I know shocker) but its still true. in a year i'm going to own my first car. 2004 Ford Mustang GT. its beautiful and my family gave me hell about it. (u should be follow to get ure dream car on your first car) but i did. and i dont look back i love my car. cost $11,999.99 but i love it

    13. I'm not interested in owning limited dolls. If I saw one I really loved, I'd still go for that specific doll if I could afford it, but just based on the concept of purchase alone, I would prefer my doll's uniqueness to come from customization.

I'm fine with limited dolls existing for people who are into it, though. You'll have no competition from me to buy them ;)

While it's not fun to miss out, it's just a fact of life in general that if you don't have money available at the right time to buy a certain product, you may miss out on it. I don't think doll companies have a responsibility to try to compensate for that reality. Our financial choices are our own responsibility, for better or worse.

I would suggest that if anyone is seriously concerned about missing out on a limited doll in the future, they start putting some of their doll money aside rather than spending it. Then when the time comes, you'll be ready.

    14. I like the idea of a limited sculpt. My first doll and only as of the moment is an Illusion Spirit Minos. He is limited. It took a while for him to sell out but I feel special to know that very few will have the exact same mold. However he has a twin with eyes closed. He came sanded, and with a body. You couldn't get the head by itself. But there wasn't a special faceup or clothing. So he cost the same amount as all the IS dolls. He was just made fewer then the rest. I think that is a good way of doing it.

    15. I know limited benefit the company but I don't really like the idea. Several limiteds are beautiful without all the props.p and I would love to get them if they were not sold out. I am not made of money.

    16. Limited or unlimited makes absolutely no difference to me. If I love a doll I could care less if someone else has the same one.

    17. I don't mind the idea but I think its annoying when you save up for one and its gone by the time you go and buy it

    18. Exactly how I feel...I fall in love with a doll just to find out later that it is out of stock and will never be in stock again. >__> but then we have the wonderful marketplace <33

    19. I kind of like limited dolls for their rarity and beauty. But at the same time I don't like them because some people can't afford them in time. It would be nice if companies would bring the limiteds back around every once in a while, but not too often.

    20. I love free limited dolls/heads/items that you get when buying during an event. I don't particularly like time limited dolls themselves though, like Soom's. People get all worked up now, and because of that many people end up buying them, which defeats the purpose of a limited. I prefer limited number of dolls, like Luts and Dollshe used to have.
