Do you like the idea of "limited" dolls?

Jul 2, 2009

    1. It may not be fair but I like people having different dolls. If everyone had the same ones all fullset all the time it would get old.

I've owned about an equal amount of limiteds and unlimited dolls, I kept my two unlimiteds and sold all my limiteds for a time.

    2. I don't mind the idea of limited dolls but think they should be on offer for longer than a month or two and they should come round in cycles like sold for a few months and then again the following year - that way they're still limited but you get more than one chance to own them.

    3. Some will say that it's unfair that some dolls (if not all) are so expensive-- because they cannot afford their most wanted ones! Life is not fair, sorry.

I think that limited dolls make the hobby more exciting :) Love them!

    4. I definitely think there is something appealing about being one of the twenty people that own a doll (just a ballpark example).

At the same time, I never have enough money to buy said LE dolls... /cry

    5. Nope.
I think thats only good for people with much money ;).

    6. Yes and no.

No: because it leads to scrambling for funds if there's any hope at all to afford one if one wished to get it in either a set timetable or while you're racing other people to the checkout. You may not even know it exists until it's gone.

Yes is a little broader. Yes, because it allows companies to 'test market' in a way. Limited dolls allow them to try out new ideas that might be more complex than they want to make as a standard edition, or potentially more controversial in some form -- ideas like this just might end up being added to more regular release items if they are found to be popular or worth the company's investment to produce them. It may also be that they simply don't have the materials to make more than a few of them for whatever reason, but do want to make some.

    7. Very true! Volks released their swarrico bodies limited dolls before bringing that option to the FCS dolls and the magnetic head caps to both the FCS and standard dolls.

In Japan, however, consumers love limited edition items. There are even limited edition Kit Kat flavors. I am not sure if this applies to other parts of Asia, though. Perhaps someone here could confirm this...

    8. I like the idea of "limited" dolls. I think that somebody can want the, one and only doll which is not present at others. I very much wanted LittleFee Ante, but it is a lot of them in Russia, therefore I did not begin to buy it.
And someone, on the contrary, wants the same doll, as at the friend. So there should be different variants!

    9. I love limited dolls. My first doll was a limited Souldoll Jinwoo, and i love the fact that not everyone and their mom has one, it just makes him that much more special to me. Now not everyone thinks like me, but i also love the hunt lol! When i fell in love with the Jinwoo i knew it wouldnt be easy to find, but once i did and he arrived and i had him, i love him. So much in fact hes had over 6 faceups and wig changes just to find the perfect one!

      But again thats just me~

    10. I like limiteds in the fact that they can be very beautiful and rare, but I don't like them in the fact of the elitism it can bring.

There are a lot of people with too much money and too little sense, who buy loads of Limiteds. They don't love the sculpt, and always find a fault with it, but they still buy it.

And I guess I don't like limiteds in the fact I have no money to buy them XD

    11. That kind of defeats the purpose of it being limited, though. How is it limited if you (generic) know it will be available again. Instead of being limited, that just means it has ordering periods. I would never think of a sculpt like Migidoll's Ryu as limited, even though he's not available all the time. I also do not think of Soom's FFDs as limited for the same reason. Just because I can't get them every single day of the year, that doesn't make them limited.

I personally love and fully support the idea of limiteds. So much uniqueness and creativity is put into them. They are beautiful to look at, even if I can't bring them all home. If people miss out one, well, that's tough luck. Like any hobby out there, some things are going to be rarer or more expensive than others. It's how life works.

      You said it.

    12. Lawks yes! I LOVE limiteds. Sorry...I mean I love the idea of limiteds but I don't love every limited ever made.

When I hold my HyperManiac I know he is nearly as limited as I am. We have SO much in common!

(NB: both of us have wonky stinging)

    13. I like the idea of some limited models, that are accessable but not entirely common. Unfortunately the limited amount or month only usually causes high price and low availability. Some of my favorite models are limiteds, but there's no chance of me getting them.

    14. I like the limited dolls to a point. I love the beauty that some of the limited collections are and the idea of having a "one of a kind" or "limited number" doll. But sometimes the prices sends me down the "is it even worth it" path. I guess when It comes down to it, its a matter of how much i really love the doll and how much of a price difference between a normal doll and a limited really is.

    15. My first doll is a limited. I didn't buy her because she's limited - I loved her sculpt, her everything.

I'm glad she's a limited sometimes though. It's like, kinda awkward for me if lots of people have her. She's more like an individual to me so I can't get my head around the fact that hundreds of people can own her. Its like having a bag that everyone is carrying. Kinda weird. (That's why I never liked bags like LV etc..) I suppose if I fall in love with a one of a kind (and am able to afford it), that would make the mental acrobatics easier, in a way.

I'm getting a pukipiki though... in a loooooooong time from now. Hundreds of people must have this dolll - it seems that popular to me. It's easier to imagine having puki that everyone has - they are different somehow. Like little fairies....

      And so I rationalize.... >.<

    16. What's the fun of collecting if you can't have something that is "special" or "limited"? Climbing that mountain to obtain the gold fleece is the fun of collecting.
It just seems some people like everything handed to them with out the chase or the joy of obtaining something with sweat and tears.

    17. Well I like it if I had one, if they are already sold, than I hate it , like...
My dream doll; Delphine from D.O.D.
      She is...
      sold ;_________;

    18. Agreed! Of course there should be limiteds. There are limiteds in pretty much ANY collectible or hobby - from rare baseball cards to rare stamps to the perfume you could only get by attending a one-time $500 ticket event to rare repainted Christmas ornaments you could only get by winning a drawing to the toy that was only available briefly before it was pulled off the shelves...

I do feel the pain of not being able to afford a limited - there's one I REALLY want but it's too much money for me to justify it (the mold isn't limited, but the color, faceup and outfit are - and I can't justify an additional $300+ for those). But I still think there should definitely be limiteds. And that they shouldn't be brought back exactly as before. Maybe the same mold but with a different fullset, or variations on the fullset - but never exactly the same.

    19. :nowords: Hold it. Your case of Sour Grapes Syndrome justifies you saying LE-collectors have 'too little sense'? Are you serious?

    20. Well, let's see... there are different ways a doll can be 'limited.' I'd prefer no dolls ever be limited, just because I think its kind of unnecessary -- I don't care if every last person on the earth has the same doll as me. I really don't. The only thing that defines the doll's "specialness" is how special it is to me. Limitedness just causes excessive prices on the secondhand market, and the doll companies see none of that profit. But scalpers do see that profit. Not my idea of spiffiness.

My favorite 'limiting' process is from Alchemic Labo. They hold limited production runs with unlimited sign up slots, every now and then. So, even though you can't always get it right away if you want it, and might have to pay a higher price on the secondhand market, you can always wait around for another preorder.

Also, with limited production runs (Soom MD's), I'm okay with it. At least everyone who wants to could order it at that time period, generally. I mean, you might be out of luck and not have the money, or you might have just come into the doll hobby and missed out, but--generally--I think it's a fair enough system, especially with layaway options. I don't mind that Soom does it, and I think it's a good way to do it.

Next best way is a limited supply available on a lottery system. I'm still okay with this. Then comes first come first serve over the ever-lagging interwebz. Not so okay with that.

Finally, there's Volks. Now, Volks, I love your dolls. What I do NOT like is the fact that you never release new standard dolls, and then with all the limited dolls you do release, you throw huge events that are difficult to travel to, require other fees to be paid (like entrance), and require lining up at early hours, and staying in that line for hours. NOT COOL. Granted, at least sometimes you have after-events, but still. It doesn't make them more special. It just makes them really, REALLY expensive on the aftermarket T.T
