Do you like the smell of resin?

Jul 19, 2014

    1. I don't like or dislike it. I try to NOT smell it, though. Resin particles are bad for your lungs and if you're smelling it, it's possible you are also breathing in particles. That's usually if you're sanding or something like that. But sometimes that "new doll" resin smell can mean it's resin dust--so if it's a new doll, don't suck in all that resin smell, just in case!

    2. I do, actually! I at first did not think I would, but when I opened up my first doll the smell hit me and I quite liked it.

(then again it kind of reminds me of old, old permanent markers :sweat)

    3. Yes, but I tend to like the smell of new stuff. (Other dolls, electronics, cars and shoes) For me it's one of the enjoyments of buying something new, as the new smell doesn't last for long.

    4. Neither of my dolls arrived smelling strongly of resin (one of them was ordered through a US dealer, so they probably had him made for a while). But when I did pick up the smell, I thought it was pretty gross. :sweat

    5. My doll is in his box about 99% of the time, so when I do open it, it does smell like resin (though I think that smell has faded over time). I'm not sure I entirely like it but it isn't the worst smell in the world, either. xD Though now I'm scared because I did smell the pieces when I first got him and stuff out of curiosity I think, and a couple of times after randomly I believe(?), but he had no visible dust on him so I hope that's okay. ^^;; I've never sanded him or used magic eraser either though. But I'll definitely try to be more careful from now on.

    6. Oh yeah! I love that "new resin" smell. Although, I'm really disappointed now that it's faded. :( It never dawned on me that the smell could be toxic particles.

    7. Same for me, I keep my dolls in a cupboard so everytime I open it the smell of resin is quite strong ( especially the one where are my Fairyland's dolls ?! )
and ...I love it, can't explain why ;)

Otherwise, I don't think that this smell is toxic, only resin dust could be a danger isn't it ?

    8. I love the smell of Resin in the same way I like garage, basement, mineral spirits, and gasoline smells . It's one of those odd things I probably shouldn't like but do anyway :sweat. Every once in awhile, I like to open my doll's box and smell the resin smell that still clings to the cushions but it's kind of fading away sadly :pout:.

    9. It might be because my dolls are either second hand or because they sat at a shop for a good while - but they don't really have a smell to me. Now that you mention this - I'm getting a brand spanking new doll soon so I guess I'll find out soon enough if I can smell resin or not. I sure hope my new doll doesn't stink.

    10. I don't mind it at all. My dolls are always boxed up, one way or other, so the smell really keeps. Some companies have strong resin smell, others don't.

    11. For me, that 'new resin smell' when you get a brand new doll from the company (or never used secondhand) doesn't make me think of new dolls. It makes me think of modding with my dremel! *revs dremel*

I wear a respirator when working with my dremel or with very heavy sanding, but even after a I rinse the resin dust off the finished doll parts, they have that 'new resin smell' for a while, and I love it. But again, it makes me think of modding, which I love very much. ^ - ^

    12. It depends on the company! I love my Bambicrony Chloe but I do NOT like the smell of Bambicrony's resin mix! I was so sad because she smelled awful. She's better now. On the other hand, I love the way Fairyland's resin smells! Iplehouse is mild and barely there for me. Volks resin smells...old and quite cold. Not a bad smell really.

    13. I love it! my dolls always sat out so the smell went away quickly, but that smell does not go away! I recently had to put them in boxes and they are smelling rather strongly of resin in their box! (But so strongly that it concerns me a little.. )

    14. Yes! Especially when they're new

    15. I just got my girl today. She smells lightly of sharpies. It's not something I like, but it's hardly noticeable.

    16. Nope. I'm one of those unfortunate persons who can't stand any chemical smell. So, I stay away from strong scents like perfume, candles, scented laundry detergent, and 'toxic' materials like msc, turpentine, & acetone -which makes doing face ups difficult. I'm thankful my dolls have all aired out and they don't give me a headache.

    17. My dolls have mostly not been new when I got them so there wasn't too much of that new doll smell left when they arrived. The few that have been, oh yeah, they fairly stank with it, laugh. I can't say it's a totally offensive smell but when it's strong like with a brand new doll it makes me dizzy and gives me a bit of a headache after I open the box. All chemical smells do that to me. It's not just resin. I did throw out my doll boxes because of it. Even a week or two later with the doll box opened and set in a ventilated place they still smelled strongly of resin. Oddly the dolls did not for long once they were out of the box, but the boxes they never really got to the point where I felt I wanted to keep them. They were pretty generic boxes. That company is a lower end one and doesn't use anything special to ship in so it was no loss really.

A doll buddy of mine told me to put a face mask on and wipe down my first dolls with a damp paper towel after I opened them just in case there was any resin dust left over from casting and polishing the doll. She also warned me not to open a box sans the mask for a new doll just in case so while I did notice the smell it wasn't as bad or as dangerous for my lungs as it could have been. I was prepared a bit for the process of de-boxing a new doll. Even with a face mask I could smell it and I did have a bit of a headache after even though my lungs were fairly well protected. I had to throw the boxes out on my screen porch. I could not keep them in my house. But like I said I'm chemically sensitive. I've got mild asthma besides so I don't take chances with resin. I wear a properly rated face mask whenever I am working with my dolls, if I am sanding etc.

    18. I have to say yes! Why? Because it is the smell of dolls and happiness ! :D

    19. I honestly can't say I can recall what new resin smells like. I've had twelve dolls... and it's just never stuck as something memorable, I guess? I'll have to pay attention when my new boy comes in.

    20. i like the way it smells.. im not sure why but i like to sniff my dolls.. call me weird but i like the smell of weird things like that.. like paper.. i like the smell of paper lol
