Do you like the smell of resin?

Jul 19, 2014

    1. I've only ever had Luts dolls, but I absolutely adore their smell. It's not like I'd go and sniff them, but when my nose would catch the scent I'd still inhale deeply just to smell it better, lol. The smell of resin also makes the doll feel newer, in my opinion. It reminds me of the day when I got my very first doll, and that's a day I enjoy remembering.

I'm just a little sad that the smell fades as the doll ages, though. ):

    2. God no, I used to hate the smell of sharpies when I was younger and when I smell resin it's what I'm reminded of

    3. I'm indifferent. The smell itself is not bad- it smells very clean and sanitized which I always love. I think the thrill of resin smell comes from the excitement of getting a new doll! All of my dolls except for one are brand new and mint and they all retain the smell since they stay in their cases when I'm not playing with them. The other girl just doesn't have a scent, but I love her just as much as my others (if not more than a few of them)!

When I got my first resin doll I was really surprised at the smell and I assumed it was from whatever they used to clean the dolls and boxes. After getting four more, I realized it was the resin itself!

    4. I dislike the smell of plasticiser (resin itself has no smell -- the sharp hydrocarbon scent is the plasticiser, the chemical used to make the resin more resistant to breaking). I have a sensitive throat, and that smell makes it hurt and makes me cough. Luckily, only two of my dolls came home smelling strongly of it.

    5. I...huh. I don't think I've ever bothered to smell some resin before. I have a ton of GK's* too, I wonder why it never...
well, time to go rectify that.

...mmh, my unassembled GK smelled like vaseline and putty...but that kinda makes sense since that's what I put on it.
My bjd head smelled like the eye putty inside it, while the body kinda just smelled like the tupperware I keep the gk body parts in. Maybe I shouldn't store everything near each other...ahaha;; I'm curious what straight resin is supposed to smell like now. If it's anything like the eye putty (which I'm fairly certain is a plasticine clay...at the very least, I can say dollzone e-mud-001 smells like plasticine.) then I'll probably like it.

Highly tempted to crack open an unopened kit and get a fresh whiff of resin still in the sealed plastic, but I'm not sure if a doll is supposed to smell any different. They both feel like polyurethane, anyways. Though I suppose depending on the mixture it might vary in smell and what they put in it- I digress. Next time I buy a doll new I'm going to sniff it.

...Now there's something I'd never thought I'd hear myself say.

    6. It is VERY addicting!*_*

    7. I neither like or dislike it. It just kinda smells like pens to me xD

    8. Funny - my nose must be totally out of whack!! My friend who does some of my faceups says she absolutely loves the smell of fresh resin! She admits to huffing the box when she opens new heads!! However I can barely smell anything. Even when I sand bodies seam lines sometimes I can smell something faintly dfferent but not much! Probably explains why I don't use protection when I spray either!

    9. I've never really paid attention to what resin smells like. It's never stood out to me one way or the other (unlike some lighter-weight plastics that have that smell that you almost can't ignore).

    10. I like the new doll smell.

    11. I don't like the smell, it gives me a headache if I don't air out the room. Same with new figures straight out of the box.

    12. I like it for the association of "new doll" it has, but purely as a smell, I'm not actually that fond of it, personally. To me, it's part of the thrill of opening up a brand new doll and knowing that I'm the first person to see him or her since the box was sealed up all the way on the other side of the world, but I don't go around huffing boxes or dolls. :XD:

    13. Yes, I love it! it's like smelling new books.

    14. I don't mind the smell but it makes my hands itchy for some reason.

    15. I suffer from chemical sensitivity but I have not noticed that any of my dolls have an odor. I would definitely notice if they had a chemical smell.

    16. Not at all, I really hate it. I've never liked really strong smells natural or otherwise. Once the doll ages in open air a bit and the smell fades it's tolerable.

    17. I think resin smell is natural, like wood smell or grass smell; but I am a fan of certain smells like books smell, so it could be just me.
I certainly dislike strong smells (tobacco, incense or strong perfum) but resin isn't a strong smell for me, it is nice ˆwˆ

    18. I like it very much, because I associate it with BJD!

    19. Only two plus a head of mine really did (a Leekeworld head, a Unoa full doll and an Illusion Spirit full doll). The others I've bought new (RS, Dollzone, IMPLDoll, Moon House, FDoll) didn't have that much of a smell, and the second-hand ones (most of my collection) obviously did not. The ones that smelled very strongly also caused my hands to itch when handling them while the smell was still there, whereas the others didn't. I think it may have to do with either the amount of plasticiser in a given resin formula, or the temperatures they were exposed to during shipping -- I know heat activates the plasticiser, that's why boiling water will make resin flexible, so that may have to do with it. Luckily, the smell does fade after a while, and spraying a doll with MSC will stop the smell from escaping as well.

    20. I love the smell of resin, especially fresh resin. There's something about it.
