Do you make clothes for your doll?

Sep 17, 2010

    1. My dolls have a combination of clothing I've made for them, and clothing I've bought for them. Sometimes you have to sew for them if you have a certain look in mind, that no one seems to sell.

    2. I do. It's kind of frustrating sometimes, but I enjoy doing it. ^^; My dolls have some clothes that were bought and sent with them when I adopted them, some were made for them, and I've been making clothes for them. I don't mind buying clothes either though.

      So far, I've made: Three dresses, two T-shirts, &two pairs of undies. I found a tutorial for bras, so I think that's going to be my next project. ^^;

    3. Most of the time, yes. If it's ordinary pants and shirts, I'll just buy it. But if the clothes is Special to me, like if it's for cosplaying a certain character I have passion for, I'll try to do it myself if I can. =)

    4. I love to sew and make things. So when I got my first doll I was very excited! But since this was Alot smaller than I was used to sewing at I bought a few Patterns off eBay first. Once I got comfortable at it I started drafting my own patterns for my Luts Soony. Shirts, skirts, pants, shorts, I love cosplay so she's got lots of full outfits!!

At the moment I'm trying to perfect some patterns for My MSD/Kid sized Delf. So far pants are all I've managed to make work.

I buy shoes and some accessories and I'll even admit to buying my dolls underwear and 1 shirt for my coming Delf.

    5. I'M TRYING, I SWEAR I AM. Must...resist...professional (and adorable!) tiny clothing--!!!

I've made some dresses, shirts, and pants. But they're no good, so I keep on trying. Wigs, too.

    6. I have made all of my doll's clothes, even though I'm not exactly good at sewing yet. Though I have gotten a little better at it.

    7. That's my whole plan... the biggest reason why I got a BJD... to make clothes and historical costumes for. :D

    8. Same here! /wave I love the Rococo era :3 It's one of the main reasons I got my doll too. I just started pattern making for my doll last night and it is definitely harder than making patterns for people :/ (and they're itty bitty XP) I can't mount her anywhere or stiff her joints to keep her still. I have another method I'm gonna try tonight that might be successful though :3

    9. When I am in the mood, I do.
But I have to do everything by hand (I still need to get a new sewing machine)and I can be quite the impatient perfectionist sometimes which results in not finishing something or disliking the final result.
Until I get myself a good sewing machine, in the meantime I'll buy clothes.

    10. Me too! And 'cause I loved BJDs at first sight of course. (But the " you can use them to learn to sew and next how to make hystorical clothes" give me the final resolution about buying the first one after years spent watching photos on internet.
Now I give myself the rule about buying only accessories that I'm not able to make (like shoes) and almost no clothes (especially if they are quite easy to make).
Unfortunately I've very short time to sew, but when I can I like to make something for my dolls.

    11. Sewing machine is making everything easer and everything looks better... The first corset I've done without sewing machine and that was tragedy, the other was better. Now I'm working on dress - I hope it will be better that the last one... Patient is very important, because when we must do everything from the begging - it's a little bit annoying.

    12. My first secondhand doll came with a few outfits, including a really nice official one from the same company. However, most of my other doll clothes now, and in the future, will be sewn by me. Especially because I like costuming, and the dolls are a way for me to enjoy that hobby without having to buy enough fabric to clothe a human! That said, I will rarely be making the shoes for my dolls, though.

    13. Oh, goodness. xD

Let's just say, I've tried before, but those few times that I've tried have ended miserably.
I don't own a working sewing machine, and if you can barely even sew with that, then you'll never make it when you don't even know how to hand stitch. xD
I would like to learn, though; that'd be really convenient.

    14. Yep! and accessories like necklaces, bracletes, circlets, etc are super easy if you've taken any sort of beading class and have the proper tools to bend the wires.

    15. Yes, I make clothes for them.
I also want to try making them shoes, these seem more difficult to make.

    16. I handmake most stuff, except for the really difficult pieces. Like most people here, I also think it is great fun. :)
Roleplaying in my younger days teaches one to mix and match and create stuff.

    17. One day I'll make shoes! (haha) I wonder to make one....
Don't you think that making clothes and accessories for dolls is one of the best things in our hobby? : D

    18. I taught myself to sew with the dolls. My grandmother taught me how to use a needle and thread when i was six, but it was mostly me sewing scraps and washclothes into... well I guess you could call them modern art. i had no idea how to make the shapes.

In college i took a course in costume design and they walked me through sewing a shirt. It all clicked suddenly, then i got my doll and started sewing like crazy. Five years later and i have a ridiculously large amount of fabric in my spare room. i'm still scared to make stuff for myself, however. I can't read patterns at all!

    19. I wish I could!
I never learned how to make own clothing!
So many Ideas floating around in my head, - I love to design some outfits since I was a child and had my first doll (not a BJD -.-;). I used to wrap them in kitchen-paper and glued it, to cut it open again and gain a plan, how I have to cut the fabric.

But since I have my BJD Iam serching persons all over the world who want to make some cool clothes for my BJD. I would be very glad, to have hand crafted clothing from all BJD-lover all over the world!

But also I try to improve my own skills.
A few days ago, I made my first over-knee-sock for him. And of course - a second will follow XD
But it was very hard, because I didnt know ho to do it and made it by hand.
      I wish I had a mashine!

    20. totally! i love making clothes for my kids!
