Do you prefer full set or blank ?

Feb 12, 2019

    1. I like to buy a doll with just the face up. If they sell wigs/eyes/clothes, I might buy from their stock. But that being said, if I saw a fullset that I just LOVED, I’d consider buying it.

    2. I must say, the full set always disappointing me, unless the doll is a limited one-off. The makeup is the worst part, clothes don't have too many mistakes.

    3. As a beginner I prefer fullsets at the moment. I don't want to look at my first few face up tries for very long and be disappointed with myself. As soon as I get more practice with face ups and sewing I'll probably move towards blank dolls. :)

    4. I’ve never been compelled by full-sets. Giving a doll their face-up, choosing their clothes, or making their outfits and accessories by hand are what make a doll feel like it’s mine.

    5. Out of 15 dolls I own, I’ve bought 2 full sets so far: a Fairyland Realpuki and a Doll Chateau SD. I also have a Loongsoul full set doll on order as I really like the Asian style clothing and would like to maybe replicate it for other dolls. I don’t have predetermined ideas about the character of a doll. I buy the doll based on the sculpt and I generally go for the factory or artist face up. (I hope to develop some skills in that area in the future.)

    6. I tend to lean more towards having blank dolls. I like doing their faceups myself along with styling them. I've only purchased one fullset doll, because it was my first one and fit the character to a T.

    7. It really depends for me! My collections is spilt down the middle, between full sets that are just for display purposes and not to be touched ever...while I have dolls I got blank to dress, do hair and make up with as I please.

    8. I actually prefer fullsets but specifically ones where you have a lot of freedom to change their clothes without looking inconsistent. I won’t buy any fantasy full sets or ones with fantasy makeup. Best example would be Volks Pink House collab or Jo/Beth March full sets. To me, it saves a lot of trouble of searching for artists and accessories. I have customized a blank doll before and it was expensive so imo, there are benefits and trade offs for each decision you make.

    9. I'm about to get my second full set, a Doll Chateau Nicola-A. Even though I love the fullset outfit, my Nicola will eventually be turned into a transboy Jedi. I'm keeping the faceup and body blushing, but everything else will probably end up being stored after a while. I'm even changing his wig and eyes. Now to find a in-scale light saber....

To me, its more fun to customize a doll than to keep them forever in their fullset. I do occasionally put them in their fullset outfits, "just because." :kitty2

    10. I would really love to get blank and do my own face ups, but as a beginner I’m too scared to be disappointed with amateur face ups, and I’d prefer to get it with face up at least, with the clothes, I’d probably try to make or get some from Etsy

    11. Being new to the hobby, I think I prefer fullsets. However, I’m not oppose to buying a doll blank or with just a faceup since I’m learning how to make wigs and outfits.

    12. Blank! Every once in a while i see a fullset that i really like but most of the time the customization is my favorite part!

    13. With faceup but without any clothes or wigs. If it was a option I would most likely go without eyes too.

I just cannot do faceups and I have a hard time describing what I need to an artist. So I typically request a very basic faceup from the company that is somewhat "neutral". So no matter how I style the doll the face will be okay.

    14. I feel like when I buy a fullset I don't connect with the doll, it's not 'my' doll... I have bought a fullset this year and he's beautiful but I don't have the same connection with him as with my others. Unfortunately...

    15. I’m debating on a full set right now! My worry is, as others have mentioned too, that I won’t connect with her the same way I would if I were to customize her myself. The doll I’m looking at has a pretty unique face-up, so I wouldn’t be able to branch out clothing/style-wise like I would if it was a more “casual” look. However, aesthetically speaking she’s exactly what I’m looking for. I’ve never purchased a full set, so maybe this is a good opportunity to test it out.

    16. I PLAN on buying all blanks. Simply because it’s too expensive plus when I want a doll I know what I want them for. Most of my soon to be dolls have specific themes

    17. Right now I want full set, but once I practice doing faceups I will buy blank.

    18. So far there's been very few fullsets I liked, honestly. However, I do try to get the company faceup unless I severely dislike it, because I know myself and my dolls will sit for ages with no face if I don't get something on them. I haven't sent anyone out for a faceup yet, but I'm working up to that so that I can have my dolls look the way I truly want them to.

    19. Blank only. I dount there will ever be a fullset that I'll happen to like so much and be willing to spend extra money. Some of them are good, but buying these doesn't make sense for me personally. I'm not a collectioner and love bjds for their high customizability after all.

    20. I like to get fullset dolls(when possible) for the following reasons:
      1. You see the artists vision for the doll.
      2. I have no experience in how to do a face-up
      3. I suck at sewing doll clothes
      4. It's easier (and probably cheaper) to get everything all at once with a doll i.e clothes,wig,face-up etc.
