Do you take along your dolls on holiday?

Jun 8, 2014

    1. I have a 'travel' doll, a 60cm doll. Head was free with another doll purchase and body is a $150 fantasy doll body, so I'm less worried about damage. But this doll has now traveled with me around the US, to Korea, Canada, France and England. I've gotten use to flying with my doll, and there is a thread all about flying with your doll which is a fun read. Taking pictures in various other places/countries is fun. The thing I like best about my travel doll is I have something to do when 'travelling'. I took a ton of pictures of my doll while on the train from France to England. I also have taken pictures waiting in airports or on planes. It's something to do. I may never post the pictures, but it's fun, it passes the time. Now bringing a 60cm is a bit more difficult then a smaller doll, but I also don't recommend tiny (puki puki) dolls. The little magnetic parts from Puki Pukis can get easily lost while travelling. The $1000+ tan skin doll may not be the best doll to travel with. Travel a Doll meetup yes, travel to another country where your going to backpack across it, no. But a Yo would be great for a backpack trip. You flying across the country for a week at your grandparent's that don't have internet, then yes bring your expensive doll, pack it carefully, and you'll have something to do when bored. Personally for the grand parents trip I would pack 2 MSDs, so I can do full stories and adventures and interactions among the dolls (as I would be BORED without internet). So it's really about the type of trip a lot of the time. I've also found that you can find beauty in the most boring location when you look at things from a doll's scale.

    2. I always bring Kess (DoD Cham Näbi, 35cm), usually also Tris (KDF Bory, 42cm), and sometimes also two-three more. I need to have some of mine around me (I really miss them otherwise), and I do love getting pictures of them in locations I don't always have access too.
I rarely bring my larger dolls, though; they're much harder to pack, and if I bring them I can't bring as many.

    3. I haven't brought a doll yet but I've really wanted to. I want to bring one next year when I go on vacation but I still have the same issue: I travel in kimono and some kimono and obi are just as expensive as the dolls (or more expensive) and 99.9% of them are one of a kind. My favorite ones I pack in a hand carry and being thick silk, they take up a lot of space. I need clothes...I don't have room for dolls! :...( I suppose I don't have to wear kimono for once but that I would be less fun because while I know I can wear kimono out, I'm more wary of taking a doll out. Plus wearing something is less cumbersome than carrying something lol (and I only have 70cm dolls).

    4. I brought my boy Floyce with me ❤ he sits with me in the car, so he doesn't cause trouble or worry, and now that we're here I can take gorgeous photos of him!

    5. No, I don't take my dolls on vacation. I don't want to damage them. I don't want them to be stolen. If I am flying by plane it is hard enough to keep my luggage weight down and to one piece, which I already have to pay for--without bringing a doll.

I HAVE taken dolls on plane trips to conventions. If one can fit in my carry-on, I will take a doll to GenCon if there is a meetup planned there.

I actually packed up my EID Tedros to go to the BJDC in 2012. He took up an entire suitcase, so it was a VERY BAD IDEA!!!! Particularly considering how checked baggage is thrown around and lost by airlines! Plus, I could barely bring clothes and wouldn't have room to bring anything back with me. I will definitely not do that again!

    6. always! we usually drive so i can take several with me in the vehicle, but i just took some of them on the first plane trip since i got into the hobby. my camera bag is a backpack with separate padded compartments for my camera, lenses and dolls and i took them on as carry on. i had to limit myself to smaller dolls this time (yosd and smaller) so they would fit but normally i have soft flute cases so i can take the msd sized ones too. the only thing i don't do is take my limited dolls along, much as i would hate to have to, if anything were to happen to my dolls on holidays i only take ones that could be replaced

    7. I still don't have my doll with me (she's on her way to Australia to my boyfie) but I think I wouldn't take her much on my travels since I'd be to afraid of her being damaged/stolen. (Mine is an msd.)

    8. I never took a doll to a trip yet but I think it can be a good idea. The only thing that worries me (and most of us, I guess) is safety. And not even flight safety, 'cos one can take a bag with a doll as a carry-on luggage, but a street safety. Or hotel room safety. I would definitely bring my doll with me if I was quite sure that the journey was going to be to a safe place.

    9. I do, or I will bring them once I'm able to go on vacations... But yes, I do plan on it. And once I get my little yosd, I might just bring that on with me everywhere.

    10. Since I got in to the hobby I never go on vacation without a doll, wigs, and stuff to make more things for the one I chose to go with me. My partner is not a doll person but she understands their value to me and their value in real dollars so she will often help me carry all of the doll things I bring along on the plane or to the cars and remind me not to leave her/him anyplace. Often I bring one to work with me too.

    11. At first I was worried too,and didn't take my boy with me.I regreted it,and the next year I did.Of course I didn't pull him into the beach or the sea...I'm too afraid of that, but I took some beautiful photos near those places. ^_^If you always take care, nothing bad happens (well, usually!)

    12. A few years ago I took Xander (one of my MSD's) and my Pukipuki to Florida on holiday with my family. It was pretty fun having them around and I got some pretty funny photos although I do wish I maybe had had more time to go around everywhere and have proper photo sessions - we had a poor start to our holiday with flight delays which meant we had to give up the 'lazy days' that I planned to use as photo days and instead had to cram everything into what time we had left.
The airport security was pretty fun to go through, one of the guys at the scanner had a good giggle when my bag went through and asked if he could see my stowaway ^_^
I'll be heading to Australia and New Zealand in a month's time and again plan to take some of my gang with me - I haven't had my Littlefee for long and she's a pretty nice size to carry about so I'm thinking perhaps she and Xander will be my travel buddies.

    13. I have always wanted to, but I am afraid that they might get lost or damaged, or that I'd get weird looks when I take them out for photos. I would definitely bring a doll with me if I was travelling to a doll related event like a convention, but usually regular vacationing involves a lot of shopping, eating and sight seeing for me so I doubt I would have time to fuss over them.

    14. I have brought dolls with me three times now on holidays, but never to public places. I bring them with me when we're visiting family further up in the country, but I have never taken a doll on a holiday elsewhere. And I probably won't, either. Safety reaons. Plus, I'm too awkward in public.

    15. Currently I'm looking forward to my holidays in the end of September and I definitly take my Realpuki with me and perhaps the darkhorn dragon.
They are so small they will fit in every bag.

    16. Yep! I generally take at least one doll with me whenever I travel. :)

My Shushu, Lusis, and Bonbon all came with me to Ireland and I'm taking my Rheia to Mexico in a few months. The only time I don't take them is when it could pose a danger - so I'm not taking them canoe-camping next week for example. No way am I risking them falling into the water!

    17. I do !
It's the perfect opportunity to take photos in different and lovely backgrounds.
You can see my latest holiday photos here (Ninon is playing on the beach) :

I must say I was a bit shy at first and afraid of other people staring but now I feel more confident about it.

I was also very impressed by Inma's stunning holiday pics, check it out !
For example, Inma's trip to the United Kingdom with her Iplehouse dolls :

      Enjoy !;)

    18. I do too! We have a small RV, so it's no problem taking a bunch of dolls and their props along. I made padded boxes specially to fit my dolls, and they fit nicely in the back cupboards. Larger props go in a box in an outside compartment.

Each road trip I take a set of dolls along. They've been all over the US and Canada - from Newfoundland and the Maritimes, to the Pacific coast of Oregon and Washington. From watching icebergs in Labrador, to beach combing in Florida. In the Rockies and in the desert, and everywhere in-between. I'm careful with the dolls and try to avoid excessive sun, but I figure I bought them to enjoy them, so don't worry about it too much. If they get damaged I'll just get them fixed or redone. The only accidents so far was one doll was blown over face first by strong winds coming off a glacier in the Rockies, and one other doll fell into some rapids and was washed down stream (my husband jumped into the river and rescued her)

I prefer isolated settings for photos, and am not really comfortable being watched, although I have taken photos in touristy spots with lots of people. Then I just don't wear my glasses, and tell myself if I can't see them, they can't see me either. Works like a charm.

    19. I tried to take my doll with me for a vacation but my parents told me he can't come cause 1) he is big and heavy 2) i might not be able to bring him anywhere there 3) we're going to the beach... it's hot, not good for him. xD

    20. I do! I've brought just about every size of doll on one trip or another, but my Yo-SD is my favourite to travel with - very portable.
