Do you talk to your dolls.....

Oct 26, 2020

    1. ...yes. I changed my Ducan recently into clothes and his arm snapped and pinched me so I cussed at him...respectively lol but I was just so excited to put him in his new clothes so the pinch thing went out the window quickly lmfao

    2. Definitely! I do a mix of talking out loud and think talking as if there was some sort of psychic connection XD Most of the time I'm apologizing for knocking them over lmao

    3. Yes I do but it’s nothing special. I talk out loud to myself constantly, to my dogs, to the food I’m cooking, etc etc.

    4. Yes, no shame. Though I'm not having any full blown conversations out loud... yet, lol.

    5. I talk to my dolls and my bird and my dog all the time, even to my dementia residents that don't speak, crazy as it sounds, but you never know when they might speak back at you.

    6. I’m trying to remember if I have, and I think the times I did, I was more making comments to myself than to the doll itself, if that makes sense? Like I might’ve said “Ooh, so cute!” when I was happy with how a new doll was looking in her new outfit. Or I might’ve cussed when a wig was barely too small, and kept popping off, lol.

    7. Yes lol
I talk to my doll(s) since Day 1, no matter it's dressing or posing or just cuddling ;)

    8. Yep! I chatter to everything. Most common is a "hey, stop that" whenever they fall over, haha

    9. Yep! I’m always talking to things anyway, and the dolls are no exception. They’re inspiring, and I like making up stories about their characters.

    10. :abambi:I talk all the time when I’m posing them lol. For some reason I feel like it makes them cooperate

    11. I talk to things in general, including my dolls. I have conversations with their characters in my head sometimes.

    12. Mostly apologizing when the joins make sounds. It makes me pretty nervous. Sometimes I ask them to please not break xD

    13. Yes. People with ADHD tend to still have what psychologists call "self-directed speech" (i.e., when toddlers say aloud what they're doing, step by step) into adulthood. So...if I'm already talking to myself all the time, I might as well direct it at my doll.

    14. Hi everyone!
I am a student who’s thinking about getting a doll. tl;dr at the bottom

Sometimes, I feel really lost and I have a lot of thoughts wizzing around. But they never feel meaningful enough to share with people so I just keep it to myself. I have an amazing family who I am comfortable around and can speak freely to, but I never feel like spilling out everything that’s on my mind. Even with the people I love around me, I can get pretty lonely with my thoughts. I’ll be moving to uni accommodation soon, so I feel like these moments might get lonelier.

I am not looking for a way to express myself to others, or to seek validation from others. I am looking for a way to spill out all my thoughts without having to think about it. That’s why I was interested in getting a doll just to talk to. They don’t judge, they’re all ears!

Like many, I was rather frightened by dolls from their portrayal in media (I’m especially scared of Chucky)! So when I discovered the beautiful pieces of art in ball-jointed dolls, I was very much interested. They can look alive and full of personality, like a friend who is always there.

I was wondering whether you speak to your dolls and find it helpful. Does it help with loneliness? Can it help clear out a messy head full of thoughts? In your opinion, is it worth getting an expensive doll when I can achieve the same thing is a slightly creepier plush/other kind of doll?

      tl;dr
I can feel lonely and lost sometimes but I don’t want to share my thoughts with people. Do you find it helpful to spill your thoughts to your dolls? Would you recommend it considering the high price?

    15. I don't speak to my dolls. (Though talking things out does help me so I attend therapy for that.) But I do write about my dolls a lot and even role-play them. A lot of my dolls are my original characters shelled into doll form. There's just something about seeing them as a physical form that brings me comfort. Especially for the character's I created 10+ years ago.

We all have different "uses" for our dolls. And it's not uncommon for a doll to be a comfort item. So I don't see a problem in talking to a doll if it helps you. But you do bring up a good point about "does it have to be a bjd". To that I would say no, it doesn't have to be an "expensive bjd". It also doesnt have to be a bjd in general. But if you want it to be a bjd, then that is ok. If cost is a worry, there are plenty of less expensive doll options these days. Resinsoul and Myou are my personal favorites of the more affordable companies.

Basically you can do what you want with your doll. And if you do get a bjd as a comforting object to talk to, then you can use the joke "it's cheaper than therapy".

    16. Cost-wise, what you describe above is the reason diaries/journals/memoirs have existed since the conception of written language. :3nodding:
The real answer to your question is whether it would be worth it to YOU to buy a doll for this purpose. Creative outlet has infinite forms, and if you think a doll companion is the right one for you, then go for it.

    17. Hehe yeah, I was thinking of that, but it doesn’t work for me. I don’t like the fact that the words remain on a page when it’s stuff I’d rather forget/get over with. Cost wise, my alternative would be a plush as opposed to a diary where you express yourself in a written form.

      I appreciate the ideas though! ^ ◇ ^

Yeah, this is sort of big the question for me and I know I have to be the one to answer it. BJDs have their unique appeal and I was wondering whether people can say that “yes, I think these dolls mean a lot to me for such and such reasons. It cost me money but it benefits me in these ways”. So, I am glad to hear what your dolls mean to you!

    18. I talk to my dolls more than I talk to human beings.

      They're easier to talk to...

    19. Yes, I do. I am also one of those that speak to herself quite often so... nothing weird around here.
Mostly I talk to them to complain about things doll-related ('why wouldn't you stand a pose?' 'I need to hot glue you!' 'you know what? dress yourself' xD) but I understand those who talk to them looking for comfort or reassurance cause I've also done so when I was feeling a little lost. Thankfully, I haven't felt the need to speak to them in those terms for a long time.

    20. I’ve been working on my BJD crew for many years (continuously since 2006) so I’ve managed to build a pretty substantial collection by now. I’ve found it a great artistic outlet for creating characters in a 3 dimensional form. I’ve explored my love of fashion and writing through them, and have made elaborate displays (artistic vignettes) for them to decorate my home. Walking through here is akin to wandering through a fantasy world, populated by fascinating characters. So of course I talk to them in passing! It’s kind of like they’re just part of the family…they’re great listeners, non-judgemental, and they don’t talk smack or question my opinions.;)
