Do your dolls reflect your own ideals of beauty?

May 11, 2009

    1. My ideas for picking dolls and creating characters do heavily focus on "beauty" and a fantasy look. I also really think a look of naivete is very beautiful in dolls; those are distinct characteristics in my characters as well!

    2. I would have to say yes. If I didn't find a doll or type of doll aesthetically pleasing, then I most certainly would not own it. This is why I customize my dolls to the tenth degree to be sure that they fall in like with what I consider to be appealing to my sensibilities of beauty and idealistic representation of one of the facets of me.

    3. It's funny because even just the clothes you choose and the wig and how you compose your doll (wether or not you adapt her face) still makes her into a representation of your own language. I have made a few bits and wigs for my dolls and they become little people I can identify with. I read somewhere on one of the first few pages that a doll has to have a certain ugly to be beautiful- I like that thought.I prefer a doll to have a twist than to be utterly perfectly beautiful in terms of symmetry, the right size eye, little turned up nose etc. Another thing which is important to me is that my doll is not extra skinny- I think skinny is most unpleasant. So yes, there are lots of factors which play a role in deciding which doll to own, and interestingly this little body becomes a vehicle which transforms itself into little capsules of our identity, past, present or future..

    4. i think people create dolls to have a certain look. if they want a beautiful doll they buy a doll that they think is beautiful for one reason or another. If they want a doll that's creepy they buy a doll that they think is creepy and so on. its all based on what the owner is looking for and what they think. I have two dolls and both i think are lovely in there own right. Atticus is supposed to look regal, powerful, and mystical. Scarlet is suppose to look young, childlike, innocent, and cute. in there own way they are both beautiful.

On another level when it come to dolls i think there is a lot more leniency with beauty because creativity is beautiful. Often i see dolls that may not be in a style i usually like or would find beautiful IRL but i often think are amazing on a doll. Seeing a doll with amazing detail work no matter what they style is often beautiful.

    5. I would have to say yes, I think my doll reflects my own ideal of beauty. I did, however, look for traits that the character Deidara has and it was a requirement for the doll in order for me to choose that one as that was why I was buying a doll in the first place. (He needed small, thin eyes, thin lips, a more rounded face look and not a chiseled look, a smirk sculpted into the mold, and a muscled body that's not too buff.) It was just luck that he has that perfect "cruelly beautiful" look, which I can safely say is my ideal of beauty. (And I'm sure he hates being called beautiful even though he knows he is. He's got that arrogance.):x

    6. hmmm, YES and NO

As far as sculpts go, I do want a doll because I think their face fits with my ideals of beauty! My family tells me my boy looks like what I'd want my ideal boyfriend's face to look like! I tend to gravitate to boys with narrow eyes and full lips! like this --> -3-

However, when it comes to eye color, hair color and hair style, I choose what I think looks BEST on the doll. My boy has golden blond hair and dark brown eyes right now, but my ideal is brown hair with blue eyes! :doh

    7. I don't own a doll yet, not a full doll anyhow [I only have his head].

But I was working on a story for him for quite some time then decided to make him into a doll then his sister. After Icarus, [the doll head I current have now] I'm getting his sister and stopping... for a while.

      ---

Icarus has a scar on his left[?] eye which forces it shut, since in my story he is part of a rebellion against demon forces.. He came across a hard mission and... lets say things turned out badly...
Another thing is he hates his hair. He was born a natural Ginger, and hates that his sister doesn't want him to dye or change it. [I however invested in another wig for him]
      He is also rather slim.

      ---

His sister, Persephone, his blonde hair, and boyish body.

      ---

Alot of my stories have been "This character" has a ton of curves, etc. But I would like to have a more boyish body IRL in all honesty. CURSE YOU GENETICS! In real life, I do like red hair, but I'm forceful over the subject. It's just her character. I just want to make that clear.

      Ame_hime: He's beautiful! 0_0 <3~

    8. Yes, they do reflect my own ideals of beauty - who else's should they reflect? ^^

I outfit & customize them to be whatever I think looks & fits best on each doll. However, when it comes to clothes-shopping, there are instances where my will is not done... I have at least 1 doll whose preferred style of dress is a style I don't care for & dislike shopping for... he needs way more Classic-Gay-Eurotrash clothes than I will consent to bring into the house. :XD: Even though strictly speaking he should own at least 1 pair of white trousers, I still won't buy them. But I have conceded somewhat by buying him a few scarves and vests, and a pair of cowboy boots. And he gets by with a sort of mixed-up Goth-Eurotrash style. Sometimes we all gotta compromise.

    9. Yes, they do. I adore very thin people, dark and long hair (for boys and girls), brown eyes - or purple eyes! I've wanted a perfect body for ages, now I've bought one. Easy, isn't it? *eats more chips*

To be honest, I wouldn't have bought these dolls if they didn't have perfect, thin bodies.

I would never buy blond hair for my dolls, because I think the most beautiful hair is black, red or purple. Or dark brown like my boy has, we'll se if he gets black hair later or if he'll keep his brown wig.

Lots of their clothes are almost identical with mine, and of course, my dolls have the most beautiful faces.

    10. An interesting question! Both of my dolls (who won't actually arrive until around April) I consider to be very beautiful in different ways. One of my dolls is a Volks FCS SD13. I saw some example face-ups and was astounded by the beauty of one of the F-16 samples. I decided to go for a doll very similar to her, but with a few slight changes that will, I think, better express her personality (smile lines, for example). The sample doll has, in my opinion, a very angelic face with heavier makeup that has the (somewhat paradoxical) effect of giving her a gentle, 'soft' look. My other doll also conforms to my standards of feminine beauty but is meant to have a more intimidating appearance, wearing dark colours (that contrast nicely with her long, blonde locks) and having her eyebrows at a sharp angle.

If I wanted to capture a character I didn't find very attractive, I may take some liberties with his/her appearance but still try to capture his/her most distinctive features (small eyes, long face, etc.). I don't think I could appreciate a doll as much with an appearance I considered 'ugly', to be honest. One of the reasons I (will) like my dolls is because they will be lovely to look at.

...I, of course, judge people very different from dolls (just to reassure you!). If I saw a doll that I considered 'ugly' that someone else loved dearly, I would probably find it sweet and may like the doll more myself.

BJDs' beautiful figures are definitely a perk, in my opinion, as well. It will be nice to be able to buy clothes that are guaranteed to fit so well since pretty much everything seems to appear flattering on them. It's not very realistic, but I do prefer thin dolls to chunkier ones, just because they look better in clothes, in my opinion. I used to collect non-BJD dolls but had a difficult time with their clothes because they had soft, boxy bodies (and were also meant to appear younger).

    11. My dolls all came from characters of mine, so they all share parts of me. Even the ones who have different style sense still are beautiful to me because that's how I pictured them. If I had pictured an ugly character, I would also have a doll to match it. In the case of my dolls at the moment, there seems to be a theme with black hair and gray eyes (all 3 have black hair and two have gray eyes). I'm not sure if that's what I find beautiful, just how I pictured them. My next doll will have purple hair and blue eyes. It's just how they come to me then they come out that way.

    12. Definitely a yes. I like them to have defined torsos and slender, attractive fingers. I prefer long hair so that's what most of them get.

    13. well yes actually i do think it reflect my own idea of beauty ~
most of people that got into this hobby is anime lover , so probably most of them want to make their doll 'alive' like their fav chara is ~

i am my self is anime lover (otaku) and planning to give him a characteristic of my dream guy :D

    14. Some of my dolls reflect my idea of beauty some certainly don't

    15. Yes, I think so. Everything we make, in a small way, has a part of us in them. For dolls and their looks being entirely made up of what we like... well, I think it's a lovely freedom we have, because their beauty is ideal to us. <3

    16. A lot of them probably will. Though I think I might be basing a lot of my dolls off of OCs that I have, and I like to try and keep them as diverse as I possibly can... Ultimately though, they're all going to be renditions of what I find beautiful, so...I think I'd be lying if I said they weren't.

    17. Yes, I would think so. I wouldn't want to own something that I didn't find pleasing to look at in some way, and we put so much of ourselves into these dolls that we wouldn't be happy if the doll wasn't to our liking and we often won't stop putting "work" into a doll until we think it is perfect. I'd think that that perfection we seek is our ideal of beauty. And even a doll someone made to look as ugly or creepy as possible is still uniquely beautiful in it's own way.

    18. Yes, I think so. My boy is not beautiful, he is good-looking. He has a lot of edges and is very serious and protective. You can see that directly in his face.

Auryanna has a bit of an expression like Milla Jovovich. She is a bit boyish, very-selfconscious and like trying out new things. Even if they are obviously dangerous and can kill you. You can also see that in her face, I think. But she can also be (with the right dress and wig) a perfect beauty.

So yes, my dolls mirror my ideal of beauty.

    19. My dolls definitely reflect my ideal of beauty. These dolls are customizable for exactly that reason :)

I agree that I would find it difficult to have a doll that I didnt personally find beautiful, but, as they say, beauty is subjective. I tend to think people are more attractive physically if I know more about them, so if I had a very in-depth character for a doll that wasnt a 'standard' beauty', I might still find that doll very beautiful.

    20. Totally! I have my pretty Amber and Heliot, while my Migidoll Miho is going to be tattooed and probably pierced, which I think can also be beautiful. I'm interested in tattoos, but I would get sick of them if they were on my body. However, I can always remove the ones on my doll and re-do them if I get tired of them :) I wouldn't buy a doll if I didn't think their face was beautiful, either ^^
