Do your dolls reflect your own ideals of beauty?

May 11, 2009

    1. Sort of...I'm drawn to sculpts with pointed ears and an ethereal quality, because I've always found it beautiful, but I fear if I saw it in reality I'd be put-off (not the elf-ears, everything is cooler with pointy ears, cats for instance).
As I don't own many BJD's it's hard for me to say that any of the sculpts themselves are attractive. Mostly because it's a combination of hair/eyes/facial features I find attractive (for some reason I'm especially fond of blue/green eyes and dark or ginger hair). I think I'm more drawn to them when they scream one of my characters at me, and that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be particularly attractive to me.

    2. Maybe a little, with some of them. I find tomboyish girls attractive so most of my girls sort of dress that way. They don't dress like boys, but no fancy dresses or frilly stuff. Cassie, my 1/6 girl dresses like a cute little girl, not what I call beauty per se but just an adorable little girl. My Drow girl, just sort of is. I don't know any Drow elves personally and if I did they'd probably subjugate, torture and kill me, since that's what they do with males. So she has her own style that reflects her character class/race. One of the girls I have on layaway is going to be this punk/alternative type girl which is totally something I can go for in women.

    3. I think I have a nice balance between what I see as attractive and what would suit the character. I won't force a body type on a character I know won't work. I suppose subconsciously my female dolls to an extent are avatars for how I'd like to act even though I don't and their body could reflect the body I would wish to have. I have a preference to body types that are impractical for the norm like comic book style curvaceous women for example plus I like the idea generally of dolls having appearances that don't fit the norm as this a great hobby to explore it in

    4. Actually, yes. I rarely find supermodels or Hollywood stars beautiful, with their perfect teeth, perfect hair, perfect skin, perfect body. In fact I find it really boring. I've written and write several novels and not any of my 100+ characters are described as "beautiful". For if I should use that word, the Hollywood stars and supermodels are the type of beauty people will imagine.
I find great beauty in imperfectness. The more "perfect" a person are, the less attractive or beautiful I find them. I find them plain boring, as a matter of fact. There's no conflict in the face or body, there's nothing there to remember them by.

The dolls I have on my wishlist are all grumpy with not your usual kind of aesthetics. Like Iplehouse's Roger or Granado's Charles. I only have Souldoll Vito Lester so far, but even so, he has a face up that makes him look like he suffers from insomnia, and eyes that makes you wonder if he's having a fever x) He's so grumpy-looking that you can't help but smile when looking at him, because every time you look at him you find something new that pops out. That's not considered "beautiful", that can, in fact, be considered "ugly".

So yeah, my dolls do represent the vision I have of what beauty is. The things that makes you go "I hate his nose, that's why I love him to bits".

    5. My own standards of beauty can vary a lot actually. In real life I tend to date slightly skinny, slightly geeky guys that might not even appeal to a lot of women. I like looking at well built classically handsome guys too but when it comes to dating I'm far more likely to date that nerdish guy not too many women think is cute rather than the hunk who looks like he belongs on a sports team. I went out of my way to buy a bright green rather sharp nosed SD sized BJD. The blue SD girl I bought, the SD boy I chose they are definitely not your typical BJD sculpts either. In my mind they're all adorable but I'm sure a lot of people here might question my taste. Beautiful can mean very different things to different people. My taste runs to atypical beauty most of the time actually. Faces with character often talk to me more than perfectly beautiful model type faces. Perfectly beautiful faces all the time can be boring to me actually, and that's speaking not only as a doll person, but as a photographer. I like all kinds of faces and I consider all kinds of people beautiful. No, I would not want an ugly doll. But what's beautiful to me and beautiful to someone else is often very different and it might well be that someone's idea of ugly is my idea of beautiful.

    6. I'd have to say yes. I like dolls that have very pale skin & long pretty hair, bright eyes, rosy cheeks, etc. Of course I like variety but I do tend to like the same type of physical traits. For instance I don't ever see myself buying a tanned doll. That doesn't mean I don't think other people's tanned dolls aren't nice though! It's just not a look I would personally invest my money in.

    7. Definitely yes, i love red hair, two of them have red hair, and they reflecte my taste of style too, lolita style ^^

    8. Without a doubt. Like Johquil, I too am drawn to fantasy elven sculpts. They are most definitely a projection of what I think to be beautiful.
However my taste is not limited to them, I have seen many truly beautiful dolls sans the pointy ears.

    9. Yes, I am definity more interested in dolls that reflect my own vision of beauty and maybe some kind of 'perfection' I could never archieve for myself.
(If that makes any sense ^^)

    10. My first BJD ( Elfdoll Lovely Amy ) set the beauty standard for me. Beauty of face, quality of resin, perfect size to dress/display. Years later I find beauty in unique versus traditional beauty styles. The beauty, quality, and whimsy of Nefer Kane and Nikki Britt are current favorites.

    11. My dolls, both BJD and not, reflect the different ideals of beauty that I have. And, that sense of beauty and style they have also gives off a glimpse into their personality. Some people dress up to express themselves and dress in a way that suits what feels like them. So, I think you can do that with dolls too. :kitty1:kitty1:kitty1

    12. My dolls reflect more what I find fascinating than a personal ideal of beauty.

And about the scenario of the unattrattive character dollified... I'd really like to have an undead doll, something similar to Iron Maiden's mascot Eddie or Soulcalibur serie's character Voldo, that's exactly something repellent for my concept of beauty, but I'm sure that I will love him. If I want to dollify a character, it is surely fascinating for me, and that's enough to make me bond with his doll version.

    13. in some ways, yes... in others, no, they're just my characters, and some of them were MEANT to be ugly or kinda average. Lol I kind of like Voldo's bizarre crap. His getup is downright offensive to the eyes but then again it's cool.. no wait, nah that's stupid looking as heck... eh.... yeah no... i don't know. it's torment.

    14. I suppose they do.
While I've created characters I personally wouldn't be attracted to, they all have been pretty in one way or another.
That said, the only ones I'd want to turn into dolls are the ones I feel personally invested in, and they all are appealing to me, in the physical sense as well as sentimental attachment. I mean, when it comes down to it, if I'm going to spend a ton of money on something, I'd prefer something I really like over, "that's nice. Not my cup of tea, but nice."

The only exception -by the simple fact that I'm not attracted to men- to that rule would be if I decide to make a male character into a doll. And while they are few in number, there are some male characters I'd totally turn into a doll.

    15. I was just discussing this with my sister the other day. Most of my dolls do reflect my idea of beauty and are inspired by real people I find attractive. While several of my characters are celebrities in their world and should be typically beautiful, I have several who are also just every day people, yet still good looking. Then I have a few more who aren't ugly, but aren't drop dead gorgeous either. The type of average people you might see at the grocery store or the mall.

I don't own any ugly characters, but I would like to make one. A guy who doesn't have a tall toned body, who has hair that doesn't want to do what he tries to make it do, who doesn't have eyes that sparkle like gem stones or a perfect smile or anything that really stands out. The sort of guy most people would walk right past and not give a second glance. BUT I'd want to give him a shining personality. Nice, funny, smart, interesting, talented. One of those people that you might call ugly upon first seeing, but once you get to know him, you'd think he's totally adorable. I had a friend like that. Nothing particularly good looking about him, but in high school and college, he had girls constantly chasing him! He was one of the coolest, nicest guys you could ever meet. It could be fun to have a doll like that.

    16. I remember when I first saw Volks Kun, and fell in love, and I shared a photo with an online friend hoping she'd share my enthusiasm. She was very dismissive of my interest, because she said that the doll was too "typical" but it didn't really matter to me. I have dolls that might be conventionally beautiful, but I also have some little balls of quirk that are equally beautiful to me, so they do reflect what I like in terms of looks. I find a bit of everything I like.

    17. Totally, from the first to the last. I think we all look for beauty in our dolls, not attractive beauty but beauty in all its extension.

E.T. is so handsome it could make me cry so don't you dare to call him ugly xD

    18. I find my dolls beautiful, but not everything I find beautiful is represented by my dolls. I don't think it would be possible to represent every form of human beauty in my doll collection (nor would I want to have enough dolls to do so,) so I just accept that my dolls show some aspects of my personal aesthetic but not the entirety.

    19. Bjds have the beauty that I cannot find in any living person. Their sculpts are perfect, like every angle of their faces is just angelic. And they are made from talented artists who out their heart into creating these dolls. So to me, they are real, even more real than any person I meet. And yet, they are the refection of my ideal beauty. I always love all those fantasy tales of angels and demons and the forbidden love stories. So I will try to make those stories into photos with the help of my gorgeous dolls.

    20. Not really. I mean, I find my dolls really pretty but what I love the most in them is seeing my characters shelled in doll form. To me they don't reflect some kind of ideal beauty, but just some regular beauty that you can find in about everyone. I don't like the idea of having perfect looking characters, it kind of bugs me. My Doll Chateau Elizabeth for example has a very little and kind of weird nose that is definitely not beautiful to me but that I like because it's not perfect at all.
