It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Do your dolls reflect your own ideals of beauty?

May 11, 2009

    1. I agree here.

    2. Yup indeed--when I go on a doll website I'm immediately drawn to the couple I think are beautiful, and those are the ones I want
not everyone has the same tastes, which is why there are such a variety; I choose mine based on what I think is beautiful and cute

...although, I'm completely new to this hobby and I didn't have a character already planned when I picked my first doll, so perhaps if I did have a character in mind when looking for a doll, and he/she happened to be ..different than my ideals for beauty I might still get the doll..but I would have to think about it for a while and it would depend on how ...gosh this sounds bad, but 'ugly' the doll was...my god I sound shallow >.<

that's a good question..at first I had a solid answer in my mind but now that I think about it..I'm not sure..hmmmmm

    3. Absolutely. I'm working on re-doing Ren at the moment to fit her new story at the moment. What I have in mind for her has her as beautiful as I think she has the possibility to be. My pretty darling angel...

    4. Kinda, my dolls are beautiful in a way that reflects their personality. I have punk doll and she's beautiful in a dark, punky way. I have a fairy themed doll and she's beautiful in a natural, foresty kind of way. Not really my IDEAL beauty, just the right beauty for them <3

    5. Mmm, well. So far my two current BJDs and the one I'm planning for next are all characters I find "ugly"
Which, as far as my characters go, the "ugly" ones are the ones that are the hardest to draw :sweat
But I don't really have this problem, since all of my characters are completely unique in the looks department. There is no trend in how they look, coincidental or not.

So really my answer is "Yes and no" since my own ideals of beauty are so varied and broad they could wrap around the earth twice.

    6. Oh! I think the beauty must be something wrong. And yes, my dolls are beautiful to me.

    7. Definitely, although the doll's features are probably a more dramatized version of my ideals - such as eyebrow/eye shape, lips, etc. Although I don't own a BJD (yet!), I'm not keen on buying a doll that has features that I don't personally see as attractive, such as pointed ears like those of fantasy characters (though I do admire them in photos).

    8. Well, yes. I wouldn't buy a doll I didn't find aesthetically pleasing. Here's some food for thought, though: Look through the "You and your doll" thread and you'll see that most of the dolls bear a resemblance to their owners! I know all my dolls have round baby faces like me. So what does this say? Are we all narcissistic?

    9. indeed :3
the qualitites of beauty in both people and dolls are the same for me :P
as far as facial structure goes, i like far apart medium-sized eyes, chubby cheeks, well defined nose and profile, and low-set neutral or frowny mouth
and all those qualities i myself do not have :( except the eye and frowny mouth thing... the other qualities are like my BF :D
then as far as hair and coloring goes, thats more like me, because i have more control over that for myself, and i try to bring myself to my ideal of beauty :P which is nude lips, freckles, grey/brown eyeshadow, bags under the eyes, ect

    10. For me my doll and hopefully soon to be dolls are a reflection of how I wish I was.
I am not a petite little elfling but in my mind I see what I would love to be.

My dolls then are reflections of myself. Beauty does not enter into for me other than what I find to be my tastes.

    11. I do not yet know quite what it is that I find beautiful, because, to me, a small, pale, big-eyed girl with long dark hair and glasses is something I find immensely attractive, but I also very much like dark-skinned, tall, masculine females with short hair, so my ideals of beauty are obviously too expansive of a realm for me to attempt to dabble in. I only have one doll, and I ordered her because, when I first saw her, she might as well have reached out from the computer screen, grabbed me by my shirt collar, shook me, and screamed in my face, "Buy ME!!!" (And maybe slapped me for good measure.) I consider her to be beautiful beyond words or comparison, which probably means that her appearance is part of my aesthetic of beauty, which means that yes, I would probably prefer a doll I consider attractive over a doll I consider ugly, but I really care about the personality I can assign to that doll, so, if I found that the ugly doll had a better personality than the prettier doll, I would have to go for the ugly doll. (Fortunately, the doll I ordered has not only a beautiful face, but also the perfect personality! >w< Yay!)

    12. Personally, my girls to depict my ideals of beauty. I always try for a "gothic" look because I think it's beautiful. But I've seen plenty of dolls here who are beautiful in other ways; if that makes sense. I think ball jointed dolls were made so people could express themselves :D

    13. Most definitely. From moulds, what kind of face-ups I like, to how I dress my dolls... it's what I find aesthetically pleasing but also character friendly. (They're mine anyway so they share my kind of tastes usually) Im not paying out all this money to get something that isn't in my tastes. That's why I love BJDs, we make them into OUR doll to suit our ideals and tastes. As for things I may not love enough to buy - that's where DoA and flickr come in. I can get my fix via pictures from other wonderful owners. :)

    14. My doll isn't just my idea of my ideal beauty, she is who I want to be. She is what I want to look like XD Strange but true!

    15. My answer is yes!

I like my dolls to represent beauty that I can't see or do in real life. More on the fantasy side (but not necessarily mystical creature-like), like beauty not acheivable by normal people.

    16. Yes, the dolls I choose are beautiful to me.

    17. Definitely the case with me. I find that I'm more unsettled when viewing dolls that do not fall into the normal standard of beauty so I would never personally own a doll I didn't find attractive in some manner or form. It certainly can be a quiet kind of beauty, but it has to be relatively symmetrical, well proportioned, etc. But to each their own, everyone has a different definition for themselves.

    18. All my dolls are beautiful to me.... I dont know... I dont WANT an ugly doll, but I can appreciate the coolness of horror mods and stuff like that... i really love looking at pictures of those. My idea of beauty is pretty typical i think.... I like "pretty and elegant" with a touch of darkness and malice.

    19. I don't think many people would get a doll that doesn't reflect their own ideal of beauty in some way, even with the ugliest doll or the nastiest horror mod those owners designed that doll for the fact that they find it aesthetically pleasing.
For me, my two dolls definately do reflect what I find beautiful. I also have to agree that my girl doll is what I wish myself to look like and my boy doll is what I would love a guy to look like. It's almost as if we do this to be closer to the dream of looking a certain way, instead of just dreaming about it we actually have it manifest itself in a physical form.

    20. I think so. So I second perfectlyflawed36.
You will dress and style your doll in a way that is appealing to you. Or maybe a bit to compensate for things you don't have/can't have IRL. I guess I would alter my dolls style more to what I would like then to what might be fitting for the character.
