Do your dolls share clothes or ...?

Oct 21, 2021

    1. Except for my first doll, all of my dolls are in the 1/3 range, so technically many of them could share clothes, but mostly, they don't. Most pieces of clothing are assigned to one doll, and each doll had their own shoebox size plastic tote with their name on it for all of their clothes and accessories. The only time they ever share clothes is if they're "hand me downs" from a doll I'm selling or who has changed styles, or if the characters would actually share that piece of clothing--for example, Brendan, Adam and Cooper are best friends and often will grab a shirt or jacket from each others' closets in their storylines. Isabella steals Adam's shirts sometimes because that's what girlfriends do. :love The only one who absolutely 100% never shares at all is Harriet, and it's because she's plus size and literally can't fit in anybody else's clothes, not even the boys'.

    2. Some do and some don't. I don't own that many dolls of this kind, despite knowing about them for a million years now, it was never my intention to own an army of them. I only own six full dolls now, and most are very different sizes, because I prefer true-to-scale 1:6, and those are not a thing in this genre of dolls. I own two large male dolls who can kind of share clothes, and a single female one who also kind of can share -- so, when I can get away with them sharing they do. I sew all my BJD clothes because I am cheap when it comes to clothes meant for these kind of dolls, and most are not "proportionate" looking (IMHO, coming as a 1:6 collector, where clothes, shoes, accessories, closures are actually to-scale, or at least look the part). However, I don't know how to sew to save my life, so I sew as little as possible, and that means even if the clothes don't fit (either in actual physical proportions or style of the character/doll), I will still try as all heck, to have the doll share the clothes if I can. Or if I really want to take photos of them, but having nothing new for them right at that moment. Which happens more often than not, in more "recent" years (because I'm a lazy-old-bum). DX

    3. I think I have enough clothes/wigs/eyes to swap them but I don't always do so. I like them to have their own look. I own a lot of a certain aesthetic but I tend to buy things with certain dolls in mind.

But now I am curious. Would Rainbow High clothes fit on Soom Mini Gems and Myou mature 1/6 dolls?

    4. I normally buy clothes with a specific doll in mind, but eventually a lot of the clothes end up being shared anyway. I have dolls in several sizes, with a bunch of each size, so it's easy to swap around.
The only dolls that don't share are ones where nobody else fits their clothes/shoes.

    5. ahh so cute! I would expect Yuuri to want a few of a Victors sweaters :p

    6. possibly ~ they have curvier hips so they ended up fitting pretty well on some slimmer 1/6 dolls! I know people sell bundles of just RH doll clothes on mercari and such if you don’t wanna buy a whole doll set : )

    7. I think the issue I have with the Rainbow High clothing is I don't always like all of it. It's definitely very NOW and in fashion but...not exactly modern day fantasy? Or I am just overly picky - I used to buy my slim minis a ton of Barbie clothes but those have gone down in quality in my opinion. If anyone has their slim minis in Rainbow High clothes, I'd love to see how it plays out.

My Soom Mini Gems probably share clothes the most. After that, my MSDs probably. My SDs tend to like to own their own outfits. For example, my Varda has at least 4-6 outfits. Will she share them with Celebrian? No because she came first, she is Queen of the Valar, and she does what she wants - including hoarding wigs. Celebrian also just seems to be happy matching her husband in their golden fall romance colors. Elrond literally only has one outfit and he seems fine with that. Glorfindel is pretty upset that he has no real outfit of his own and doesn't want to borrow Manwe's outfit because ugh too kingly. I think my SD boys - with the exception of Kuja and Thingol - have very small wardrobes. The girls have more clothing as do the smalls.

    8. no no not overly picky, I actually feel the same. While I have found a few cute clothes from RH the majority of it doesn’t fit the aesthetics I seem to find myself drawn to. I’ll have to snap a pic for you of my one DC that’s sporting a RH jacket.

and I agree I find it a lot harder to find boys clothes then for the girls haha. My one SD boy has a very tiny wardrobe as well

    9. Ahh, right? He's probably content to burrow in them as often as possible. Hehe. He does look terribly cute in them. :whee:

I have a terrible weakness for buying them both sweaters. :chocoheart

    10. I have some character specific clothes and some general clothes meaning if they are same/similar size they can share it!

    11. Mine's a bit of both.

They tend to have their own clothes (many of mine gravitate toward specific colours in their clothes as well as styles) but there's also a number of boxes of shared stuff available to them as well, some of the more generic stuff goes into a shared-collection. My main SD group, for example, are all members of the same large extended Victorian/edwardian family and the girls often coplain that there's aren't ever enough petticoats to go around. Last summer I attempted to alleviate this problme by making seven ruffled petticoats and a urther six with tucks around the hem, but I suspect it's not enough.

I'd like for them to each have a complete wardrobe of clothes specific to them, but haven't achieved that (yet?)

    12. My MSD-sized dolls all have their own warderobes, in theory. Many of them can't share clothes because of different body types or style. But their charachters all know and hang out with each other, some live together and some are related, so just as humans often do they do sometimes borrow clothes from each other.
There is also a small community pile of unasigned clothes that any one can use as long as it fits. Mostly stuff I got from friends, won at conventions or in other ways didn't get with a specific doll in mind. It's great to have some extra stuff lying around when I get a new doll so they have something to wear before I figure out who they are.

My tinies (mature, roughly 1/6) mostly share one box of random clothes. But I only have one on topic and two others right now and they are close enough in size so share most stuff (except shoes) and none of them really have a set character yet. Their "real" clothes are historically inspired fantasy stuff, but I use them as mannequins for modern stuff as well and I make them a lot of stuff just for the joy of making them, without any real master plan for styles or cohesion, so their clothes are doomed to consist out of a big box of random garments. But I am having fun and clothes that small don't take up a lot of space so it's ok. :)

    13. Two of my dolls have shared clothes, but mostly each one has their own wardrobe. This has more to do with their characters than anything else. Each one has a particular style so having them swap would, at least to me, look really strange.

    14. Oh my! This has turned into a bit of a nightmare (albeit a happy one) for me over the years.:doh I came into this hobby largely because I wanted to explore multiple fashion themes: historic, retro, wild harajuku street styles, fantasy, lolita…anything that caught my imagination that my comfy cozy self wouldn’t want to wear. I can sew and create my own patterns, so it was all good. Whenever I explored a new fashion style, I’d buy a wonderful doll to wear it. Fun, right? And sometimes I’d even buy a fascinating outfit from another designer occasionally along the way just to keep things fresh. All this fashion exploration and doll characterization was tremendous fun! And the years ticked by…one by one…(and here’s where the nightmare part kicks in) until 15 years went by in a heartbeat, and I’m looking at upwards of 50 dolls in my collection and a hugemongus pile of clothes! Yikes!:o

So in answer to the question, I do have a small handful that can occasionally share clothing, but the vast majority each have their own style entirely…most commonly 3-5 complete outfits each (and some have many more than that.) What can I say? I’m a create-a-holic clothes junkie! I’m always seeking out decorative boxes, drawers, and trunks to neatly store them all. I guess you could say I’m a hapless but happy victim of my own success.

    15. It was unintended, but I bought so many clothes of different sizes just because I likes them. I also stole many outfits from cheap porcelain dolls. I enjoy swapping different pieces with different dolls. All my dolls are different sizes and so I have big plastic bins with "yosd, msd & sd" sized clothes. I lack accessories and that is what I'm concentrating on now and to finish a few specific sets for themes I have in mind for a few of the dolls. I always seem to need shoes and hose, leggings or socks.

    16. I prefer "compulsive crafter" myslef, but I know that story. If I had the money and space for that many dolls I would probably be at the same point.

    17. My pastel boy and his best friend, a cat, share clothes frequently. My large boy and his best friend also share the clothes they both fit :) there's a few with such specific styles or sizes that they cant share, but otherwise they do, only really my trinity has her wardrope entirely to herself since she so big xD

    18. So far, only got three (and a half, sorry Nova I don't know where your body is) dolls all in the MSD range, one of whom is off-topic. Technically, everyone shares and all the clothes go in the same box, but everyone's got their own style! Some day, perhaps, they'll start getting their own stuff. Tian Ni in particular I want to make a like, hanfu and some other things for her that she probs won't share.

    19. Both. I sew and have made everyone their own jeans and top. But some of my older dolls have multiple outfits and I tend to borrow them for new dolls. I just got two big 65 boys with another on the way, so I have lots of sewing to do this winter! Ultimately, I'd like to have themed outfits for different sets of dolls (Japanese for everyone, Fairy, Steampunk and Medieval Fantasy for specific characters). Since I've got over 20 dolls, this should occupy me for quite a while.

    20. I don't have many doll clothes between all my SD girls in particular, so they all share but I do try to make it a goal for them to have their own clothes and actually have found myself apologizing for borrowing their clothes X'D
