Does anyone prefer SMALLER eyes?

Apr 5, 2009

    1. My Sprite girl has a couple of pairs of 16mms and a couple of 14mms, and while she looks OK in 16mms, I like her better in the 14mms, it's a more realistic look. Though she does actually look more nonhuman and fey in the 16mms. My Song has 14mms-I tried him on 16mms and they were way too big and bug-eyed, and 12mms don't fill in his eye sockets. My Elfdolls are both 16mms and I'm happy with that.

It's nice that all my dolls so far are in the 14mm-16mm range-it makes buying eyes so much easier. Even if you're not sure they're what you want for Doll A, there's always a chance that Doll B or C or D or E will suit them.

I've got some 14s to start with for my Beyla, I'll probably play around a bit with her when she comes.

    2. It really depends on the doll, but I would say I generally like the medium to smaller eyes better. If anything, the doll looks more real and less 'scary'. I don't have any dolls yet, but I'm on the way to buying a Migidoll Miho, who has quite big eyes. In this case, I think the sculpt suits the large eyes, but if I was being picky, I would get smaller eyes.

    3. Some one told me that smaller eyes are more menacing but I don't really know :)

    4. For me it quite depends on the character/doll in question, but especially for male dolls I prefer smaller eyes. I got to loan my friends's Bobobie Pixie for a while though, and she looked plain CREEPY with too small eyes, so it really depends on the mold.

    5. I have a Shinydoll Akali. She has super small eyes. She takes a size 12mm and she is a 56cm doll! People do comment on that :) I like it because to me...Akali has a deep mysterious look in her eyes. Always. When I look at her she sometimes has such an intense expression on her face. I just love it! You should see how she is staring at me now.

Aside from the eye well size I also prefer to keep the actual eye smaller. My Kealin comes with 18mm eyes but I keep him in 16mm. When the wells are filled with the iris color my dolls look like they are clueless. That is how I see it anyway.

But for me it is not about achieving a realistic look, rather it is a desire for my dolls to have some intensity and thoughtfulness in their expression.

      - Thanks for making me laugh out loud.

    6. Well, smaller irises are more mature looking. Generally speaking, doll eyes are sold by the outer diameter of the eyeball. In my MiniMee sculpts I prefer a smaller iris. I have just discovered an artist that creates custom acrylic eyes for a very reasonable charge.

The photo below is my MnM Cate Blanchett sculpt with custom made 11mm eye and 4mm iris.

    7. My Katie.A and Bory both have Kanis Augen eyes, which are slightly smaller than 16mm, but not as small as 14's. It's a really nice happy medium, especially for the Bory because with 16mm's she looks glazed and with 14mm's she looks beady-eyed. My Suiseiseki looks too anime-ish with 20mms, so I use 18mm's for her. However, if I use a smaller 18mm's, she looks sort of creepy (with the default face-up at least).

Pretty much, I like having at least some of the whites of the eyes showing.

    8. I read somewhere that smaller eyes usually make a doll look more realistic or mature, and since I'm not a fan of huge huge anime style eye sockets that take up 1/4 [or even what sometimes looks like 1/3] of the face, I prefer a mix of realistically sized + not too huge eyeballs. Of course, I'm not saying I wouldn't get a doll with big eyes, 'cause I totally would if the sculpt complied with my basic checklist of dolly demands [joints, face, nose, etc.].

    9. I love the way 14mm eyes look in MSDs. The smaller eyes just make them look more... mature, more serious. Which is good, when trying to make the MSD look in their 20s

    10. Yeah, I agree that smaller eyes tend to make them look more mature. I prefer smaller eyes in the sense that i like more realistic looking models. The models that have huge elf like eyes aren't something I'm personally into.

    11. I think it really depends on the shape of the eye in the first place. In some cases a smaller eye can look more mature, and in other cases they can make the doll look more beady or starey.
I tend to prefer dreaming dolls anyway, dolls with completely opened eyes rarely appeal to me.

    12. For me it all depends on the character of the doll. For example, Cyn, my FL DES floating head will be getting some nice 14mm eyes. Why? Because she's going to be a rude, secluded, brooding little assassin.

My future doll Wolf (MNF Karsh) however will be receiving these beautiful 16mm eyes I bought for him not long ago (they literally have NO dome... didn't ask for it, and was really disappointed at first, but they'll work perfectly). He's a quiet, kind, almost mysterious necromanced demon (bwahaha zombie demon, not a wolf demon though!), so I wanted him to have a softer expression, hence larger eyes.

    13. I wear 10mm in my Unoa, who i usually see with 12mm in... I like having just a bit of white around the eyes. It makes them more human and less...animeish.

    14. I like smaller eyes, but sometimes it gaps too much or gives the effect of dilated eyes b.c the pupil XD I like the way it looks more realistic and mature.

    15. It depends on the type of doll for me.

For my Juniors I wanted them to have that cutesy look, so I modded their eyewells to take eyes a size bigger. As for my Unoas and my misc. larger size dolls I prefer the smaller size because I want them to look more mature. Irises too big in my mature dolls make them look young and doll-like and eyes too small in my child-like dolls make them look paranoid. xD

    16. You know, what I heard when I was trying on eyes in Volks was that "smaller eyes make the doll look more mature." I definitely agree with that.

I'm on the end of preferring the large-type eyes, especially on my MSD boy because he looks more innocent with larger irises, but I saw him with 14mm's in, and it's definitely a completely different look! :)

    17. I'm almost always changing my doll eyes to a size smaller than the recommended size or what they come with... most of my sds wear 14-16mm and my msds and yo all wear 14mm......if you ever ask anyone that knows me well I am PICKY about eyes and always nothing bigger than 16mm for anything.

    18. For my KD Hodoo doll, I changed his eye size from the default 16mm to 14mm for two reasons: his character (14mm eyes make him more serious and mature, exactly how I envision him to be :)) and eye socket size (the opening is so darn small that the 16mm iris just swallows his whole eye O.o''').

    19. I prefer smaller/more realistic sized eyes in most dolls, aside from tinies. Than I usually go up a size or else they look like this: O_O

My Custom House girl came with 12mm eyes and when I opened the box I was actually frightened because she looked so shocked! So they wee changed to 14mm.

I do really love smaller eyes in SD's though. It makes them look older and much more real. ♥

    20. I much prefer the smaller eyes as well. I don't really like the doe-eyed look since I prefer my dolls to look older.
