Does anyone prefer SMALLER eyes?

Apr 5, 2009

    1. I recently got my dolls smaller eyes, and what a difference! It made them seem more like themselves, I thought. The original eyes made them look more doll-like, and the smaller ones definitely added a hint of realism to them.

    2. For a younger character, I prefer big eyes. I think it makes them look cute and innocent :3
But smaller eyes definitely suit more mature characters a lot more, I think.

    3. I prefer smaller eyes, because they make dolls appear more realistic and mature, to me anyway. :)

    4. I almost always prefer bigger eyes. I also prefer the young-looking dolls though. I think large eyes give them an added innocence.

    5. I prefer the bigger eyes <3
Dolls look more naive and cute with them in my opinion. Even on guys.

    6. So often female dolls in particular have huuuge eye sockets, and I think it can sometimes ruin the entire doll's look to me, make it seem a lot less realistic. Especially if the eyes are very far apart in addition to that, it just looks so weird. As the more realistic the better, imo.

So yes, I prefer smaller eye sockets / eyes !

    7. It really depends on the doll.
I use the eyes as part of their personality, eyes are good at defining someone.

I have one doll that has two heads because she has a split personality. Her eye color AND eye size changes when her alter ego takes over.
      So I kind of use/like both. :)

    8. My cherry blossom alice has large eyes even though she is small but my Volks rose has smallish eyes. I like larger eyes but I like my rose since it goes with her face. I guess both can be very beautiful in a particular setting.

    9. I completely agree, most dolls I like, I'd prefer smaller eyes. Big eyed give them a babyish look that I'm not nearly as fond of. However, I think that big eyes look better on girl dolls...

    10. i have to say that i like eye to be bigger. my MSD take 14mm but i love to put 16 mm in if i can.
I also like pupaless (is that how u spell it?) eyes. The bigger the better!!!!!

    11. i LOVE smaller eyes, that's why im in love with souldoll's new molds :D i have jinwoo myself, and i love him, i think i love a more realistic face with smaller eyes, he looks perfect! :3

    12. I like my dolls to look very human since they're based on characters who are human. In the first place I look for sculpts that have more human proportions rather than "anime" ones with huge eye holes. I haven't had the opportunity to see how eyes the next size down would look in my boy's face, but I have been thinking about trying some smaller eyes on him.

    13. OK, I see that people are discussing the size of the eyeball, not the actual eye opening of the doll. Seems folks are choosing between a difference between two centimeters. I tend to prefer larger pupils, but that is understandable
As the pupil in the human eye enlarges when certain conditions are met, such as fondness for the person being gazed upon, dreaminess, innocence, kindness of deed or discussion. People like to be gazed upon fondly, so they like for their dolls to gaze fondly upon them. Narrowed eyes might mean some unpleasantness is coming. Large pupils also indicate childlike qualities, another human trait associated with pleasantness.

I have something to say about the size of the eye openings, and if this addressed elsewhere, then I am sorry, and you might consider to remove this,

I really don't care for the overly huge, oval, staring eyes in some dolls, as they look like cartoons, not beautified people or otherworldly beautiful beings. The cartoon expression is just what other people are drawn to. I am prejudiced, I think, as I saw a young lady court disaster in her life some 16 years ago. She was graduating withhin months, and so at an age to start taking on adult responsibilities. She had so lost herself in that particular cartoon world, that her parents were more than concerned, her classmates had difficulties in basic communication with her, her dad was so concerned that he cut her off from certain TV shows, that for most of us are just teenage amusements. She was a very attractive girl, but did not care at all for her own looks, indeed, she saw herself as one of cartoon characters. She drew much disbelief from her classmates when she insisted that she had those cartoon eyes, showing pictures all around. She said she looked just like that.

Teens (and folks of all ages) love cartoon characters, fairy tales, mythical people, science fictional and fantasy characters. We enjoy the escapism, but we don't really live there and know it. This young lady could not, or would not, separate herself from her fantasy world. What made her take this stance, I have no idea, and won't speculate.
I don't know if those trained in dealing with this type of problem can always know the answer to that, or how to bring a person back to where they can enjoy their pastimes, but still function and live in the real world.

That said, I saw a movie once, where the female star was infected with a strange affliction of becoming a cross between a human and an animal. Her eyes changed when the animal persona was upon her. The pupils of her eyes were dark, like those of deer, and filled the entire eye opening with little to no white showing. It was intriguing on the actress. Such a persona might fit very well into the bjd world. I wonder, does anyone make that kind of eye for our dolls.

    14. I usually prefer smaller eyes, though all my dolls are wearing bigger ones for now while I can't buy them new ones. I'm ok with somewhat big eyes as long as they're not so huge you can barely see the sclera, then that's just not my thing.

If we mean in the sculpts, then I like them from small to medium I guess? Huge eyes are not my thing unless it's for a specific character that requires it.

Nothing against those who like them big though, of course!

    15. Body dysmorphic disorder. --Some people have it!

But that's entirely different from talking about bjds (although... hmmm... I wonder if some people have that feeling towards their dolls? I'd think it's much healthier than having it towards themself! --and that's still a different issue than small eyes!)

Personally, I like different styles for different dolls. Cute dolls with big eyes-- all good. Realistic, mature dolls with smaller irises and pupils-- also good. Anime eyes for anime styles-- also good. Whatever owners like is fine. I'm glad there are more styles available. I'd LOVE to see more choice in iris sizes for my mature/small eye-opening dolls, though! I have a 70cm male I just put 10mm eyes in!!! Crazy! There was a very slight gap only in one eye... so he could have done better with smaller irises in a slightly larger eye (12mm)... but it pretty much fit. That's how much smaller the eyes sometimes need to be in the large mature male dolls!!!

    16. I prefer smaller eyes for more realistic mature human looks. I feel like so many of the dolls I've bought came with default eyes much too large and the sclera barely shows at all. It looks more animal than human to me, so I always change them.

    17. I usually end up going a size smaller than the company default with my dolls. My Resinsoul Ya is the only doll I have that still has her original eyes. All the others were too large and just overwhelming.

    18. After reading this thread I think i'm going to try smaller eyes. I just can't seem to find any eyes for my celine that I really love. I bought some off etsy and they're all so beautiful but none of them look right to me and in certain positions make her look creepy and give a dead stare. I feel like smaller eyes might solve my problem.

    19. Yeah. I really don't like when the iris takes up most of the eye. I much prefer smaller.

    20. Definitely ! I like when the iris isn't too big, it gives a more natural and expressive look in my opinion :)
