Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. Oh now this is an interesting way of looking at this subject.

I'm 43 and have three kids (19.17 and 8)...and while I am still awaiting my dolls to arrive (Dz Shoyo catgirl and Hid Assassin) it strikes me that I've already assigned an age and personality to them even though they are not yet named. Their personality will doubtless evolve as I get to know them. I bought them not to fill a character role but rather just because they did that *dollie reach out and you know you wanna buy me* thing ~ ambushing my emotions and pocketbook.

At that time I knew one thing was certain....they were not teenagers. I live with teens...and while I might be a hardcore otaku in a middle-aged skin and probably don't act my age according to some....I couldn't imagine my dolls as teens let alone children..

For some reason that I can't shake....my girl is over 300 years old. She's a bit naive and trusting, and might be mistaken for something less than fluff for brains ~ but she's no dummy. The boy is still a mystery to me ~ but he's a hotheaded little reactionary who will be driven to distraction by the way the catgirl seemingly manages to land on her feet no matter what. He's rather the flipside of her lalala nature, younger ...although I don't know how much... and wishes she'd just act her age ~__^

My plans for another doll involve someone who is older yet....heh...I wonder if that's a reaction of my having children and needing my escapism to reflect something other than my life or....playing with concepts of eternal youth with ageless dolls?

    2. I am 56 on the outside and 16 on the inside. So I guess my dolls are closer to my inside then my outside:lol: I enjoy dressing them in all sorts of clothing from Victorian to punk. I don't know that they are a representation of me as a person but I don't care.

    3. I'm 23 and have a just-over 1 year old son, but I tend to be attracted to the tween-age female dolls. That's probably because my affinity for sewing/knitting cute, lacy pink things and my active, messy toddler don't go together at all. When I was younger, I was more attracted to the curvy adult female dolls so I could pretend they were grownups with babies. But now that I'm a grownup with a baby, I want the younger-looking innocent dolls so I can pretend I'm care-free again. Or something.

    4. not really.....its whatever i like, mostly. i want to base my dolls after certain characters most of the time.

    5. I dont know if your age reflects the doll - I know the Narin dolls appealed to me for my first doll because while they are beautiful and sweet, they have some character and are not babies. (I am 46 with no children). I am currently still making the excuse to myself that I am buying it for my niece......

    6. First... THANK YOU.
I have felt a little "too old" or the "adult in a room full of college/high school kids" in this hobby sometimes. I'm 35, yeeek, how the heck did that happen?!? [mumbling] Could have sworn that I graduated High School just a few years ago. [sigh]

I agree with that "life experiences" give me a certain viewpoint, but did do not feel that my age has influenced which dolls I buy. Of course I am my age and my experiences. So I'm not sure how I can separate. I buy the dolls I like, appreance and design.
I like this hobby because I can use all the things I've learned and am interested in.
I'm interested in mechanics (gears, joints, mold making etc), am a trained jeweler (apprentice level) and wax carver, design drafter/renderer, can sew but still learning about clothes construction, was/am into miniatures ("doll houses" and horses), model making/assembly (cars, figures, etc). So this hobby has everything I've ever done plus all my other likes (shoes, clothes, color, bright shiny objects, photography, etc).
I can also appreciate the enjoyment that they bring me as a relief from stress and as a creative outlet that I do not have at the "office".

I have recently, ok this week, decided to really look at what I want from this hobby and have decided to reorganize my dolls (their looks, molds etc)
But I still have a puki (cute), a littlefee on order (cute again), mnf Des (anime inspired/asian aesthetic), migi heads and lati red boy M (so older teen/young 20's realism), aod 1/3 girl (who may leave) but will be replaced with realistic 60cm gal (still looking) and a 60cm anime aesthetic goth(?), mnm Nero (video game character, realistic mid-20's).

So I am all over the place. The only thing I do not do is create "People". But I think that is more "me" than my age.

My clothing styles are all over the place as well, modern clothes, streetwear, gloth, Japanese Goth/loli, reproduction, etc. The only thing I require is quality. Maybe that is my age?

    7. I don't think that there's a correlation in my case. I'm sixteen, and my doll/doll concepts all fall between the ages of sixteen and twenty-eight. I think that I treat them more as peers than I treat them like children, because they're original characters. And I don't feel like the reason why most of my doll concepts are older than me is because I admire those who are older. These characters certainly have substantially more autonomy than I do, but they do destructive things with their freedom. I currently only own the youngest of the lot, who is my age. I haven't mothered him yet, nor do I feel any particular compulsion to.

Even though I'm of the age that seems attracted to anime, gothic, emo, etc, fashion, I'm not personally interested in that style. All my dolls, unfortunately, will have to suffer from my love of v-neck sweaters, cardigans, skinny jeans, and blazers.

    8. I am 18 and I tend to be attracted to two separate age groups in dolls. 8-11 and 16-18. I think this is because those were my favorite ages to be, so I made my dolls look that age too. I don't feel like I can "relate" to anything older, but I'm sure as I age that will change. It always has.

    9. not sure haha.
i'm 15 and my current doll is like, mid 20s.
my first doll was 18ish? maybe? don't remember haha
and my last doll before i sold her was supposed to be...in the general "entering adolescence" vicinity of age ^_^
dunno about my next dolls. they're probably gonna be spread out from teens to 20s. nothing older than 30, probably~

    10. How does your age affect the dolls you enjoy? How does it affect the style of dress they wear?
Well, I'm 24 and I have an extremely large range group. They range in ages 5 to 32 to 5000 year old vampires. I have a family and I have fantasy creatures. I have both the immature sculpts (luts, AR, souldoll kids) and more realistic (Unidoll and Limwha) I love them all equally. I dress them in clothing that is suitable for their characters age and time period.

    11. I'm almost 18, both of my dolls ages range between 18-21. I never really give my characters a specific age because I like to think that I have a little space to work with if I need them to respond in a certain way.

I really think that I like for my boy dolls to have a very mature and grown up look, and for my girls to look innocent and pure. I suppose I follow a stereotypical boy/girl personality, but I really think it's because I'm the total opposite of my female dolls. I'm very much a tomboy, but I would love if my girl was always dressed in pink frills and little cute shoes and carried around some sort of little toy. On the flip side, I'm dating a guy who is very emotional and caring, but I like my boy dolls to be tough and at times heartless.

I guess that I really see my dolls more on the level of me. My (soon to be two) boy(s) are treated more like my best friends (because I get along better with guys) and my girl is treated more like a sister, I respect her and I'm glad I have her, but I really don't care to see her that often unless I need to do something with her or take pictures.

hehe, interesting question though! I know I'll be thinking about this all night!

    12. I'm 32. I have dolls of all sizes - from puki to unidoll's men (as mature as dolls ever get, IMHO). As for characters - it's the team of immortal mages, so I don't even start to count their age. ^_^ Youngest is 40-something ))) oldest - many centuries )))
I don't think age matters. You just do what you want.

    13. i haven't put much thought into that. im 22 right now. i like MSD and SD at the moment but it might change :)

    14. Next month I'm 19 and Aki is in his 200's, sooo, my age doesn't relly reflect his. :sweat But his style kind of does. A lot of times I wish to wear girly clothes, like cute skirts but I don't so I guess his clothes are a reflection of stuff I wished I wore but don't. His hair now is jrockish which my hair is once it's been to the hair styler. :XD:

    15. I am 21 and all my dolls' characters range from 16 - late 20s. I think it's easier for me to relate to them based on my own experiences and my perceived experiences based on people I've known who are older than me. Although I am good with children, I don't have any immediate plans for any "child" dolls, nor do I have plans for older dolls (though I'd be hard-pressed to find a doll that looks a day over 30).

    16. This is a really good question and one I haven't thought about. But, I think my choice in doll was really a reflection of my personality and not age. I believe I would've chosen the same doll I have now nine years ago because I've always liked young, pretty boys (no perverted connotation intended). I also believe I would pick the same doll nine years in the future. Maybe it's not so much due to personality as it is due to consistent tastes, but I couldn't imagine the two not in relation to each other. I also have a husband and one child, but neither have seemed to have much of an influence on my doll hobby.

As for clothing, I know that will change. My style has changed so much already that I'm certain my doll will reflect that in the future. For me, clothing has kinda been a reflection of age. I mean, I love lolita wear now but I couldn't imagine me wearing it past age thirty-five. So, I wonder what my doll with be wearing when I'm thirty-five...?

    17. I'm 14 at the moment (15 soon), and my only boy is around 18-19. I have no idea why I chose that age, I guess it just suited his background, and how he looked. The majority of my characters are around that age too, I think for me, it depends on the sizes, and of course, how they can be linked to and react with one another. I'm not sure if I'll go much older, but I'm pretty sure i'll be staying away from dolls younger than 12. I just don't know why x3

    18. This is interesting and makes me smile. When I was in my teens and 20's, I couldn't imagine myself having kids--even though I worked with kids and eventually taught science. Then came that moment--omg--what if I never have any? Ended up with four--the joys of my life. And this is sort of how my ABJD experience began--an adult doll--then onto minis and soon a tiny. I think of my dolls in terms of family groups--they all will be partnered up or have kids or siblings.

    19. What a great topic for discussion. I'm 47 *gasp*, but I've always felt no more than say, 21. I do have 2 kids, and lots of animals. No baby dolls at all, never did care for them... but I do have a number of childish looking dolls although I never stamp any of my dolls with ages, as that's too confining. I like mature dolls, too, and I like to dress them in both contemporary fashions and historical style. Although I've never been into the vampires I'm actually looking at getting one now that I have seen a sculpt I like, so I do like a wide range of type within my dolls.

But there's been an alarmingly growing attraction to CUTE as I get older. I am liking the tinies very much, and starting to go more in that direction. I live in fear that by the time I'm 60 I'll have garden gnomes and cement lawn ornaments everywhere, OMG. My kids are getting older and will soon be moving into their own lives. The cute syndrome is probably a pathetic attempt at delaying that inevitability, I'm sure. But then again, I have always loved baby animals and fuzziness, so maybe it was always lurking in my psyche somewhere and is just now beginning to take hold.

    20. I don't know that my age has a lot to do with it. I'm 30 and I really have a variety in doll sculpts from very realistic to highly stylized. Half my dolls are characters from my stories, and as characters some of them existed as far back as my late teens, though some didn't become fully fleshed out until they became dolls. In age, their characters run from their late teens up to 38.

Their characters really decide what styles they wear--a lot of mine are average casual guys, but I have a bit more fun with my girls' wardrobes. Because I'm limited in what I'm allowed to wear to work (well, I'll be changing jobs, so who knows now but in the past...). so it's fun to get to play around more with some of my dolls' clothes and wigs (the one's whose characters are a little more adventurous in the clothing department anyway).
