Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. I guess my age does affect the dolls I like. I'm 18 and I don't necessarily like pukis or kid dolls too much. I mainly like SDs and older looking MSDs. Although I lean more to liking SDs, I like MSDs for their size. I think that if I was younger I might lean more to smaller/youger dolls. If I was older I think I may like some of the bigger/more mature 70cm range dolls.

    2. Im almost 22...
Jainey is 19, Morgan is 17, Bru is 12, and my un-named lati green coco is 14...

I know I want to have 4 kids IRL... but my dolls (though i call them my kids) arent really that... I feel like theyre more like friends... or siblings...
speaking of siblings, my real brothers are 17 and 3. My sister is 12... so that may have something to do with ages...

I do tend to go for curvier mature looking dolls and yo sized kiddies.... no boys really... havent managed to bond with one yet.

    3. I'm 15, going on 16 in August and only have a Minifee Shushu. I don't really know how old she is, I'm thinking maybe 18 or 19, however I don't think my age influenced the doll itself. It just all comes down to peoples' tastes. I know I at least want three: A girl(which I have, Amalia), a boy(which I'm saving for, Frederick, a FeePle Riff, who will probably be in his early twenties), and a small/mini/puki/etc. sized doll(who doesn't have a name because I won't be looking until after Frederick).

I guess I just sort of look at the doll and a story just comes over time for me. They could be old, young, immortal, who knows? It just really depends on what comes to me. My family has always said I'm just very imaginative, but I suppose it's more of a trait than an age thing?

    4. The only way my age [16] effects my dolls is the money! I don't have a job and in the economy crisis you'd be surprised how many people don't want to hire a teenager. D;

as for the dolls ages versus my own, nope not at all.

    5. In my case, it has nothing to do with the age of the doll and everything to do with the look of the doll. I'm middle aged, but I like rock n' roll looking dolls of all ages. For a "child" doll this usually means it has to have an attitude or else look else wise beyond its years. The "cute" fat faced baby dolls do nothing for me. Any doll that looks too pretty or too bland, including most of the mature male Dollmore dolls and most of the Volks mature female dolls, also does nothing for me. (Before someone chimes in and says those sculpts don't look pretty or bland with the right faceup, I have now owned enough dolls to have a pretty good idea of the range a faceup can add, and I'm rarely surprised.)

While this is an interesting topic to consider, I think people need to beware of generalizations, such that younger collectors want high school dolls and older ones want cute babies or pretty "fashion doll" girls. The reality is that people are all over the map, and not everybody feels a need to run around advertising their age or their collecting preference, so just because you see people of a certain age with certain types of dolls, don't make assumptions about everybody else.

    6. I'm 15 and so is Oliver. He'll be 15 forever, though. He doesn't age- even in the 'story world' he lived in. The other dolls I want would be 16, 17, and 20/21 or so. I have a bunch of other characters that I haven't really... found perfect sculpts for or really wanted to get and the oldest is 22, and the youngest are toddlers. My dolls are all going to be based off original characters, most of which are teenagers or young adults. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm more familiar with teenagers than adults that my planned 'family' are all clustered around the same age.

    7. I don't know if my age reflects on my dolls or not. I do tend to choose dolls that look like they are in their late teens/early 20s, I am 26. All of my girls are around 22. I used to have dolls that looked much younger, and a couple that looked older, but I found that I didn't enjoy them as much. The older ones seemed too serious, and the young ones were just too... young :P Even was I was a child, I never really got into dolls that were children. I have always loved fashion, and to me, kids clothes are just not that interesting. That is definitely the main factor. I like kids, but I will probably never have any (I have health problems and it would be quite dangerous). Plus, the stories I like to make up with my dolls mainly only involve adults. I've always been this way, even as a child, and I seriously doubt that that will change much (it hasn't in 20 years, so why would it?).

    8. I'm still in my early teens, but i also like the mature-looking boys -- i'm actually currently saving up/shopping for a Migidoll Miho head and a Souldoll body. but i also have a mature MSD-size girl and a Puki, so i guess not. I mean, i'm sure peoples' tastes can change with time, but for me, i'm not sure age has too much to do with it.

    9. I don't think my age effects my choices to be honest.

    10. Not sure if age has anything to do with my collection choices either. I just started collecting BJD's and I am really diggin' the tinies and I am 34. I have always wanted a decked out dollhouse soo maybe that is why the tinies appeal to me.

    11. I don't think my age (35) affects what I choose. I mainly go by looks. Right now I am really interested in the tiny dolls and definitely the anthros.

    12. I think so. I'm 20, but I don't like being 20, so I like dolls that look younger than me ^^;; My one girl's character is supposed to be 14.

    13. I think it's when you join the hobby. From what I see, generally, newer people seem to like younger dolls, where as people who have been in the hobby a while are moving more toward more mature models. Maybe it's a reflection of age, then again, maybe not.

    14. I really don't think my age reflects the dolls I want to buy. I like anything from puki's to more mature looking 70 cm dolls to tell the truth. ^^
I only have one doll character that is even near my age.

    15. Hmmm... this is an interesting topic.
I'm 26. I currently have 2 dolls that look to be in their late teens, early 20's. About 2 years ago my husband and I started trying for kids. We've had 3 miscarriages...
I wasn't interested in the really young looking dolls until we started having trouble having our own kids... (No, I'm not one of those people who think of my BJDs as kids)
I'm thinking that if we weren't going through all of this I wouldn't want one of those dolls so bad.
      Or maybe I would :P

    16. I'm a kid (Not going to tell the exact age)
      And I'm a girl,
I like the younger looking girls
But I also like the mature look on a girl,it depends on what look I'm going for really.
      For the males I would say more mature,the tiny guys kinda look like aliens to me ^^;

    17. Im in my latter 30s. I guess I started late in this field of collecting :sweat
When I first started in 07 I liked the MSDs. They were smaller, I thought more my size. I even liked the tinies then. I really wasnt certain that I would enjoy a large SD. I was intimidated.

Now three years later, I love the mature looking BJDs. I prefer the SDs because they seem to focus on that. I like a girl with curves and a guy with pecs. My SD Girl is in her late 20s, my SD male is in his 30s. My MSD girl is in her late teens (though she still looks a bit more immature than that in her cheeks). My DZ Fox has no set age though I have him older in attitude, more like latter 20s or so.

I would have to say, yes. When I started my BJDs were dressed in school outfits, cute outfits. With my change in attitude towards mature looking dolls, I love now dressing my girls in form fitting outfits that show their curves (even a nice jean set which hugs). My boys are dressed to match their characters. I have my MSD girl still but I find because of the SDs I have, I tend to dress her more mature to match but keep a bit of innocence to her because her character is younger (she is more of a rebellious teen now).

    18. Hm I personaly like younger looking dolls and older looking dolls:aheartbea.
For example I love minifee's ( especialy shiwoo), they look really cute and young, but I also love the look of soom sard/soom dia boys ( beautifull face!) wich has a really mature look in my opinon

What I really dislike are the dolls that have really baby-like faces, I personaly think that little fee's look baby-like, due to their face, mouth, nose and hands( the chubby fingers), but ofcourse that my personal vieuw on them.
( I just dont like babys O.o, and no, I dont want to have children :sweat )

So, i'm 20 years old, and does my age reflect on the dolls I buy?...I have no idea:doh

    19. I have 2 of Rainman's dolls, Red and Yumi, and I'm in my early 50's. What I get a kick out of is when friends my age come over, serious businesswomen some of them, they turn into 10 year olds. They are all over my kids, (yep, I call them that, so do my kids and grandkids - it just kinda happened) :sweat gushing over the wigs, the clothes, I swear they have to tear themselves away. I get a giggle over that.

Somehow my two seem more serious, and I could see perhaps avoiding the tinies because they might seem less impressive - but personally I plan to get a PongPong. My only criteria is whether I fall for the face. Something in the face tweaks something inside of me, and that's all I need to know. :aheartbea

    20. I'm 21. I like dolls that are a bit younger looking, perhaps 12-16? I guess my dolls' personalities are also child-like, because after all they sit on shelves all day and amuse themselves with tea parties. ;)

For me, dolls are form of escapism into the idealized nostalgia of childhood. I'm at a point in life where I have to grow up and take on grown-up things, but I want to retain this magical, secret make-believe world with talking toys and pretty things. That's the role that bjds play for me.
