Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. The only effect my age (51 1/2) has on my collecting habits is that after so many years in the same job I have enough play money to buy way more than I need.

I see around me "little kid" looking dolls, elves, demons, anime-ish faces, fashion size dolls and more mature boyz. I'm an equal opportunity resin lover, I think.

Edit: Tumble, isn't that a hoot? I get the same response from my two co-workers (one of whom is significantly closer to retirement than I am) when I take one of the dolls to work (which I do rarely). Fascination, giggles, squeaks of joy and gleams of naughty in the eyes when they ask if it's an anatomically correct boy ;) . And *loads* of admiration for the artistry in the faceups (not the ones I've done) and the clothing. It's a great feeling.

    2. Eh heh heh heh heh.:lol::lol:

    3.
    4. I don't the my age reflects on my dolls age- I'm 27 and I don't have any kids, but my dolls are liking the sweet, childish kind of style. My MW Junior is 9ish.

    5. Hmmm. I'm not sure. :sweat I'm still fairly new to the hobby, so maybe I'll wait a few years and then see if anything has changed. XD

I'm 26 right now. It seems like all the dolls I have and the ones I have planned for now all fall between the looks and ages of 15-30 (...or for Dr. House at least, a mental age in that range ). Also, all favor the same types of clothing styles as I do now. Really, each doll in a way seems to embody a small part of myself. So at this time maybe I'm mostly attracted to dolls that seem like myself, or people I might be friends with in real life? Currently I'm not really considering purchasing any very young looking dolls, or any type of fantasy character or anthro dolls...but then again I'm not put off by them either....

In general I'm curious about any BJD, really. So I dunno. At this point I can't really say whether my age reflects my taste in dolls or not. Only time will tell, but I have a feeling that wherever my current interests lie moreso than my age will always determine my choices in doll purchases.

    6. Not really, I could say it is a destiny!
I order dolls by judging by my personal style and taste.

    7. My age doesn't effect anything else i do so i doubt it will influence my love of BJD much.

    8. depends. but i think not. i was always totally allergic at children :P so i dun like young young resembles boy/girl/children dolls (face, body etc) i prefer "mature" or over 20 resembling dolls ,better if is big size.
but i do like pet dolls , specially cats, even if they are tiny.

    9. I will drift as far away from the more childish dolls as much as possible. I do have a few tinies that some people do see as children, but I see them as more muse-like, certainly not young (one of my planned yo-size dolls is a character old enough to be my grandfather). Very few of my doll's characters are young, none are under 20, most are over 30, so I can't exactly have them looking like kiddies. Does that have some reflection on my age? I have no idea, 22 and I have only a handful of that age

    10. I don't think so..I'm 47 so most of my dolls are older..mid 20's-30's with a few immortals thrown in...I'm not into the cutesy childish looking dolls...but I did fall for a DT Seola 7yr and she is my little girl..about 7-8..and her ghost is about the same age..but that's it.

    11. In my case, age did reflect in my choice of what dolls I wanted to buy. I never really gave BJDs much of a thought because the ones I've seen are the large-eyed, cute and young-looking ones, and those weren't really the type I'm attracted to. It was not until I was browsing someone's site where they posted links to Dollmore's and Iplehouse's older-looking dolls that I started considering that not all BJDs have young anime character looks, especially in the body of the dolls in IH's case.

    12. Hmm... well I don't have a doll, but I guess it does reflect on the ideas I have for my doll. I'm 14 and I'm always falling for the shocking-blue/pink/green colored wigs and moderne punkish kinds of clothes XD and I'm all for piercings, haha. I don't know, though... a lot of people my age like dresses and suits too....

    13. Not at all. The only thing that doesn't appeal to me is very babyish faces, but then they don't appeal to me in real life either. I have more mature dolls, and teen-looking dolls, and some younger-looking than that. I'm a happily demographic rebel, enjoying picking sculpts, looks, clothing style and whatever else seems to fit the characters I come up with, whether or not they fit the general trend or might be seen as age-inappropriate. Age is the LAST thing I base anything on.

    14. I'm 20... and I really do not know if it really reflects my age.

I think that it may when we are younger since I do not really see a 12 year old running around with a 70cm mature male.....

After a certain age I think it is just our taste that changes through time =3

Like right now I do not really like muscular sculpts, but that may change =3

As for my dolls age groups.... they are mostly in their 20s, more adulescent looking.... some immortal or really old... and a few children =3
I have about every ages group then XD

I may just end up having every kind one day =3
But, like I said, its more because what I like or not and not really because of my age as I can like something now, not like it next year and fall in love again the next.

    15. Ha ha Catdancer I can't believe you are my age or I'm your age babbling now, I pictured you as being an almost thirty ish young woman, very artistic. It' s so strange how I get images of people that I "know" on line that are sometimes completely off.
In any event, I don't think it has much bearing, one of my best dollie friends (that I actually know IRL) has a few "kid" dolls, and she doesn't have any real kids, where as I have human kids, but only a few of my dolls are children.

    16. I'm 19 and I must say, I do like the more cartoonish style dolls. However, I do appreciate the more mature-looking dolls. I just like big eyes. I've been a big anime fan (a tasteful one though) for about...seven years now. So that's been a big part of my life for pretty much my entire memory. That's influenced my aesthetic a lot.

    17. I am a 26 year old and as someone who has been into bjds for years but only now realistically thinking of getting a bjd (or 2.. or more.) I can say for myself, I first wanted to get a one and him after a SPECIFIC Japanese Rock Star. Then I wanted to some to be based on my older Original Characters... sadly there are just WAY TOO MANY of them.

Now, I think I have an idea for a boy but more of an unknown character I've been toying with for some time. Nothing is fleashed out just yet but I have some time untill I am totally saved up for him.

Age really depends on the STYLING of the bjd in some cases. I would say this is negated by an author with various ages groups for thier characters and in turn, their bjds.

Sort of OT: I really love reading all of the responses on this topic. Really awesome stuff.

    18. My dolls are all mature sculpts, but I don't think that's a matter of my age. The dolls I had when I was very young were also adults; I never had any interest in childlike dolls or baby dolls even when I was one.

    19. I'm pretty young and i have been into BJD's for ev!

    20. I am honestly not sure if I personally think my own age reflects on the dolls I purchase, since they are based on original characters of mine that range in ages; but I'm sure it does have some part to do with it. I'm in my early twenties and have dolls that make me think of men my age, or slightly older. However, because I do not feel that young women are appealing, I have a desire to buy female dolls that look like they are in their late 30's and early 40's - for example, in my opinion, the IP Jessica fits this well.

I'm sure that being this age probably does have some bit to do with the dolls I buy because of the styles of clothing I can put on them; but I don't think it has much bearing when it comes to the size a person buys. - I know people my age who love children, have never had them, and love tinies. - I know people who are my mother's age that have SD sized "boyfriend" dolls that look like they are in their twenties.

I think personality reflects in what you are attracted to and why you buy it far more than your age. However, as I've said, I'm sure the generation you came from probably reflects some bit as well- just not as much in my opinion.
