Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. I think my age is more reflected in the type of characters I create and the background stories I write for them, than the age my own dolls are. I have a character who is born in my story (she isn't even 1 year old) and one guy who's in his mid 40's.

The stories I write now (at age 26) are different from the stories I write when I was 16. They're less filled with standard teenage angst.

    2. Well, I'm 18, and I like alot of the different dolls. I do like more of the mature looking dolls. But there are some of the Tiny's that I think are adorable and wouldn't mind owning. So, I don't know. I think it doesn't matter what your age is, there are just certain likes and dislikes. I'm a teen who like mature older looking dolls myself.

    3. Well...I'm 15 and usually go for "mature" boys and girls but hey, there are lots of tinys and minys I'd love to have.

Yeah, in some way it's possible that age reflect kind of doll you purchase. For example...8 years old girl would probably go for some cutie tiny like pukipuki or so and not for some Iplehouse Super Hero :)

I can't tell very well 'cause I don't have and don't plan to have any dolls with human age (well...maybe one or two...:sweat)

    4. ....This really is an interesting topic. And it's interesting to read the answers.
But am I the only one who's never really thought about how old my dolls are?
I'm 23, hmm. No I have no idea. One of my dolls looks really young but will be adopting a daughter soon....I have no idea!

    5. You have a point.

I'm 17, almost 18 (3 days). My incoming MSD is going to be eternally 17, but my SDs, once I get them, are going to be 21-23.

    6. My two dolls are adults, though younger than I am (31). They are singers and performers of classical music. One of them is on her way though. We share a lot of the same interests :)
I'm really curious how my girl will look. She's a normal head BBB Charisma and judging from pics I've seen, she's rather cheeky, even naughty. I wonder whether Shinta can handle her ;) It certainly is no wonder why the Charisma is also available with horns :P

    7. I think my resins kids personality has matured overtime as mine has too. The older they get the more mature they look you could say. So I would say age does have an effect on your dolls at least for me. But it mainly goes with what you are interested in and of course that changes over time which has an effect on your dolls.

    8. Yes, my dolls are a family, reflecting on my own pretty much. I am still on my early 20s. but i had my kids very young. My female doll reflects that, my male doll too. I am beyond teen dramas now, and i do get amused when i read very young teen comments around, makes me think they still have a long way to go ^^

    9. I don't know if the dolls I like have any correlation to my age but since the beginning of the hobby I've preferred younger, cutesy looking dolls and still do now. Of course, over time, I started wanting "art doll" style dolls that I've admired for a long time but never wanted as a BJD. So there are definitely tastes I've gained but not any that have changed.

    10. I don't really think it does for me. I'm 19 and I love mature looking dolls, the tiny baby looking ones, the adolescent ones and any in between. However, I do notice that the characters I create and draw have a sort of theme.. Rarely any of them are over maybe 20something.. unless it's a vampire character, lol. I think it's because I'm better at drawing more effeminate boys rather than masculine, mature-looking men... which I'm trying to practice on.. >< But with the dolls, I'm game for any kind.

    11. I am not sure, some of my dolls are more childish than I would be now. So I think they're reflecting how I've been and how I hope to be, rather than how I am. =)

    12. absolutely. when i was a teenager i like the dolls with big bright anime-ish eyes, now i really dont like them. (age 14-17 maybe)
Now i like the dolls with a more realistic and beautiful face and body. i think Supia Rosy is a perfect example of my preference. (age 19-20 now)

    13. well I'm fifteen and yet I would rather have the mature looking dolls. I don't have one yet :( but when I do get one, I think I'd get one that looks older and mature. but I woiuld still buy the adorable ones.

    14. I think my taste in dolls have remained relatively the same. I am 23 but ever since I can remember I have always liked more mature looking dolls that can model really pretty clothes. If anything, my taste has gotten too expensive recently much to the regret of my bank account.

    15. 21 here, and I don't think my taste in dolls is a reflection of my age, at least it isn't now (it may have been when I was younger). I have one character who's 13, I'm going to get one who's supposed to look about 30... I see beauty in sculpts of all "ages" and sizes, realism or not. I do have my picky side so I won't claim to like everything, but my likes span all sizes, types, and appearances.

    16. This is a really interesting question...First, let me admit that I've only skimmed the topic so my impressions might be wrong; I have a feeling that I'm one of the "older" collectors here. I'm 50-ish and I see a lot of young members posting here.

I'm very picky with my doll choices and I've always preferred more mature looking dolls. With specific regards to bjds I'm delighted with being able to find realistic body sculpts. I know that I have been heavily influenced by my time spent on a co-ed swim team and in life-drawing classes with nude models.

I've tried owning a few very young dolls, but unless they are realistically portrayed, I have a hard time with them and wind up letting them go.

So, no I don't think my age has anything to do with my choices other than it reflects my life experiences.

    17. Nope. ^_^; My dolls will be a whole range of ages, from five to...well, aesthetically somewhere around thirty. I suppose I usually lean towards ones that could be aged from late teens to early twenties, though.

    18. Answering to the main question: a huge YES I guess!

I'm about 29 and all my characters are adults. My 'main' dolls are 27, 25, 26 and 37, and I'm waiting to find the right mould for a 50yo man (like George Clooney if I have to reffer) and an about 40yo woman (like Madonna's fourties).
I think the teenagers' stories are nice, but they're not for me (in my dolls, because I still like to read comics and novels with teens as main charas), and I just need pretty adult dolls because I want them to work, to travel, to love, to sex, to fight as adults would do.

If I need some child to complete my characters they are just that: 'complements'.

Hard for me as I only like MSD sized dolls!

    19. Well, I'm 22 and I have bounced around on what dolls I prefer. But I think I'm finally settling on SD boy dolls. My first doll was an SD-sized boy, than a mini, some tines, finally back to SD boys again.

And my SD boys are... fantasy story-lined, but they look/dress/act as twenty-somethings. So it's probably actual attraction on my part *feels like a dork*. So yes, my age probably has something to do with it.

    20. I don't know if it is age or life experiences. The majority of my characters are adults, early to mid 20's (except for the immortal characters who are considerably older though they appear in their 20's-30's). However I have several child characters which I think stems from being a mother myself. I see a further extent of human interaction than I did as a teen and so my characters have more relationships. Not just intimate relationships but friendships, and familial relationships which I find easier to understand now that I am married with children of my own. All of my dolls are shells for original characters so most of the sculpts I chose are adult, with a few tinies.
