1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. Does age affect the choice?

      I think Yes and No.

Yes, I imagine it will affect certain choices as I do notice that our younger members (and by that I mean under 20) seem to go for the more stylised BJD faces whereas over 20s seem more open to realistic scuplts and childlike tinies.
You also tend to find a lot of the younger members are more into buying a doll to fit a specific character than just buying it because they like the sculpt.

That's just a generalisation though, everyone is different and has different tastes which is where the 'No' part comes in.

Me, I'm the wrong side of 40 now, have no kids, am not even that fond of kids and yet most of my dolls are tinies so that blows part of the kids and tinies theory out of the water!! However the fact that most of my tinies have elf ears and do not look like children tends to follow the not attracted to childlike dolls/tinies part.

Any childlike ones I do have I tend to think of them more as facets of my own persona rather than treating them as substitute children.

As for larger dolls as beautiful as most are I tend to find a great deal of the more popular ones lack that certain something that would make them desirable to me. Maybe it's the artist in me as well as my age but I prefer dolls that have something a bit quirky about them, something deeper than just beauty in their features.

    2. I will be 50 this year and I dont think age has a thing to do with it. I like the big dolls and I tend to go for the odd or nonhuman dolls or the ones with elf ears. I think it is just a like dislike kind of thing. I guess it is all about the fantacy for me.
      Kym :)

    3. I'm 52, have two sons 22 and 13 and I have dolls of all sorts and sizes and have quite a motley assortment on my wish list. Although I read sci/fi and fantasy voraciously, I'm not into the hoovies much (OK, those pukis with the Daisy Dayes hooves are sweet) or the super tiny dolls. And I prefer realistic to stylized sculpts. My dolls are a reflection of different facets of my personality. Noelle, my Beyla, is my first tiny and she's the one that will allow me to feed my love for fluffy little girl clothes. Fauna and Kestrel are my little fae couple that I can design fantasy clothes for. Danica is my punky rebel teenager. Florian is 1000 years old and very self-assured and will let me design almost anything for him, though he loves historical get-ups. Nicolette is my everyday, art-student normal girl. I've got a little boy tiny on layaway to be a friend for Noelle as well as the head of my first actual character doll, who will allow me to actually make some of the clothes I've described for her in my stories.

I've no idea if my "advanced" age is the reason I've got such wide-ranging taste in dolls or not.

    4. I don't think a persons age has anything to do with their likes or dislikes in ANY matter.

    5. I have a child and i think it does influance me my baby is a toddler and i get attracted to yosd sizes but i also like sd sizes actually i like all sizes

    6. I am pretty new to BJD's and I'm 32. For me, I like the tinies because I like miniatures. I'm in the process of building a 1:12 scale dollhouse that my Elfdoll Tiny is the perfect scale for. I have a Lati White Pury SP that I'm not that into because I happen to have two young kids (4 and 2) so I see sweet little faces and sticky jam hands all day. My dolls are supposed to be my escape from that :)

    7. Isnt this a great hobby! Such a wide age group. I do so love my dolls. I started collecting just play dolls then vintage and antique. I was on a Crissy doll group when someone started talking about the BJDs. I had to check them out! WOW did I get hit hard. I found an El on ebay that stole my heart. I didnt win him, but I have one now... well I guess I have 2 one is an elf.

    8. Revisiting this thread (I last posted in 2005!), I think my age has affected my taste in dolls some. Now that I'm in my mid-20's and farther from my high school years, I am more interested in dolls that are meant to be a bit older. I still love my teenage characters and tinies, but now I also have interest in dolls that are more adult. It's sorta like how my tastes in manga/TV/books changed as I got older -- I still enjoy some stories that are focused around high school age characters, but I tend to like grown-up characters a lot now too. ^_~

I have also come to like more realistic (but not too realistic!) sculpts too, in part because more stylized dolls tend to look younger. This is probably at least partially due to me simply expanding my horizons over time, though.

    9. being over 50, and with my first bjd, I tend to lean toward realistic, feminine dolls, and strong- featured boy dolls. who knows what the next one will be. I do enjoy the mini.

    10. My Yue, is.. well just born. Even though he looks like a young adult... I don't think my age has much to do with him and his story or appearance. He does enjoy more elegant articles though, and so he's getting some rather lavish tings created. But, that's just because what else could suit the moon? ^-^

When I'm able to get Star, She'll be slightly more gothic then Yue(his colors are blues, greys and whites) and she'll be more bedecked in dark blues and purples wiht silver highlights.. think, the night sky.

They're not meant to be contrasts to each other, and in fact she's much older (a lady will never giver her age) though they appear to be the same age.

Yue's older 'brother' is actually an ancient mage prince of which he's the sole survivor(that he's found) of his race. Both our boys have the same feel to them, and we nearly picked the same model until I spotted Zhouyu from dollfamily(I believe...) on Ebay and fell in love. (star, will be the star model companion to Zhouyu <3) And, seeing how theres 8 years inbetween our ages. I'm not sure if
it's age, or just... maturity level and personality.

    11. Jam hands!! Lol! Do you like gilmore girls too?? Luv that show!

Anyway, I am brand new to bjd's. My first two are on order from DDE. I couldn't decide between piki and chuchu. I am pretty much only drawn to the elf-eared dolls. I am really into fantasy and scifi as an escape from the real world, and I just love their look. Size is more about price for me right now I think. I started with the pukipuki size because the others were so much more! I know as I get into them, they won't seem so bad- that is what happened with my My Child doll collection as well. I already have my eye on a pukifee.

      It starts...

    12. My age doesn't affect much my dolls purchase because it's more on my presonality. {The character's presonality to be exact.} Maybe except for the expenses, calculating and all that before buying anything doll related. And if the character's around my age then it may affect my dollie purchases. :3 noms

    13. I don't think age has much effect on what dolls I purchase, so much as what I do with them. I'm 22 (near 23~) and I'm drawn to lots of different looks in molds. Mature molds attract me as much as immature molds~ I like all the sizes, though I own mostly MSDs.

    14. hm..... This is an excellent question. I've just turned twenty five recently, and I seem to have a preference for the more youthful looking heads and mature looking bodies. Especially on the male dolls. The female dolls I like are all over the spectrum though.

    15. it would be cool to have a poll...
      like

I am under 20 and like msd size
I am 20 and like msd size
I am 30 and like msd size etc...

then we had a proof if it depends on the age or not. but this would go to far as there are so much answer possibilities lol

    16. I'm 22 and I definitely think my age affects what type of doll sculpts I like. i find myself going for the more mature doll body and a not quite so young head. Also, i generally tend to like the dolls who are past their teen years, and into their 20s as well. I find the younger dolls cute but i wouldnt really want to own one just yet.

    17. I had to think about this for a while, but I came to the conclusion that my age has no bearing on which dolls I buy at all. Since my guys are representatives of characters I've had for the last fifteen years, I imagine that if I'd bought my dolls at age ten (if I'd had the money/crazy parents who'd let me spend it at that age, and if the range of dolls available now had been for sale back then) I'm pretty sure I'd have bought the exact same sculpts as I have now at age twenty-five. That thought is quite pleasing, actually :)

    18. I'm fifty and I have a son who is now in his twenties. My dolls are mostly very young, and yeah, I would say that I am a parent to them. I didn't like dolls when I was young, and it is kind of strange to me that I like them now!

    19. I am 41 I have a 5 year old girl.

I don't think those things reflect on the dolls I like. I have a 1/6 Cherry castle doll.
I like some of the older looking dolls i just can't afford them as easily as i can the 1/6 size.

    20. Hm, this is a difficult one. I really like Yo-sized dolls, and they're certainly not in my age group. But I really like SD sized dolls too, and they are closer to my age group. I like MSDs too, though a bit less. So for me I guess it's a no xD
