Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. Sometimes, I do think my age affects the dolls I buy and am attracted to. I definitely look for more mature features and bodies. As far as dressing them go, that is more dependent on the character of the doll and my mood.

    2. When I first encountered BJDs I was about 15. Now I'm 20 and my taste in them has changed to some extent. When I first saw them, I preferred the medium-sized dolls - MSD and similar - and I liked cuter faces with wider eyes. Now that I'm actually collecting them, I prefer dolls around 60cm and I like somewhat more mature looking faces, especially for female dolls (although I don't necessarily like the more realistic mature faces and I still have a weakness for some of the cuter boy dolls). I will never have children (both because of my own will and a personal situation that would make it rather difficult) and I'm not especially fond of dolls that look like children, especially the baby-type dolls. I do like the fantasy-type tinies though, with pointed ears, hooves etc. but I feel that's more a lifelong love of fantasy than a liking for childlike dolls.

For clothes I've really gone off a lot of the modern goth-esque clothes that are all black and fishnet and straps etc. and I'm fond of more historically-inspired fantasy outfits. Casual clothing I don't mind, but I'd rather have elegant things, such as Victorian-inspired outfits.

    3. Mine do, my girls will be DD(Large bust and DDdy). I like that mature DD dolls and am not into minis or very young looking dolls, I like mine to be full-figured beautiful adult woman. Even when I was younger I liked the Videogame/anime mature sexy girl characters(like Lulu,Mai Shiranui,Millenia,Chloeri etc)

    4. I definitely prefer the mature-looking dolls as opposed to the younger dolls. This is actually probably because I get my characters as dolls, and I don't play younger characters. Of course, exceptions exist, and I just can't be die-hard anything.

Even when I was younger (oh yes, so long ago) I always played older characters (didn't know about dolls then) and even now I tend to have older or at least my age characters I plan to put into doll form. It might be a reflection of my age (23) or simply that I can't stand to have a younger main character (my stories/rps are graphic and I feel bad for the abuse I'd put them through).

    5. I'm 30 now and I got into this hobby after my son was born... I have almost exclusively tiny girls - I think I may be making up for living in a male dominated house ;) I don't think of them as my children though. I just like having them round.

    6. Considering the age ranges of my dolls is from a few years to a few centuries, they definately don't refelct my age. Most of my main dolls, the ones I bought to represent characters I play, are within the 16-35 age range, though that's technically the 16-35 age maturity range, since I have many fantasy characters that are well over that range, but look no more than a 15/16 year old. I think my dolls represent more of my mental age maturity. I definately don't act my age, and most of my characters are closer to 16-20, which is pretty much my mental age range. ;)

    7. I preferred more mature looking dolls when I first started out in the hobby and even sought out a mature mini as my first doll. Guess back then I was looking for a an upgraded, BJD versions of Barbie and Ken! :P Now though, I'm in my late 20s and find myself gravitating towards the younger, cuter, more innocent looking MSDs. Maybe it's due to nostalgia or influences from the otaku culture --- as I still enjoy my share of shoujo and don't mind my BJDs being characters in a fantastical/high school romance. ^^

    8. Does your age reflect on which dolls attract you?
My own age of *cough-- creaking antique--* is reflected in how I structure their back story, which affects how I choose when I acquire new dolls. My youngest-looking dolls are characters at the upper end of the age range for a lot of the folks commenting here; only one floating head one is intended to be a teenager. But they aren't "mature" in the sense of inflating their chests, either. I tend to go for realistic faces with smaller eyes. I try to match the heads on heavier, wider bodies than you see in a lot of the 65-73 cm dolls right now. I'll add that all of this is subject to change, too. I've noticed some of my friends who've been into bjds a long time, who were into the Big Boiz, have been migrating back toward the classic childlike sculpts such as those among Volks and CP dolls.

How does your age affect the dolls you enjoy? How does it affect the style of dress they wear?

Some of the folks whose faceup work I admire give great 3D portraits of types of people in their work. When it's a fantasy creature, it's a convincing one. It makes me aspire to higher realism. So I work on getting proportions right (such as the size of their eyes, or their heads vs. their bodies), I try to pick so that I keep the dolls in scale to one another, and to their surroundings. I'm still working on improving my faceups!
re: dress, my work experience is reflected in choices for clothes, like ordinary work suits, casual clothes, and fabulous sweaters. I don't want massive oversized buttons on shirts, for instance. I want them to look in scale. There are enough fantasy elements showing up in their stories as it is.

    9. I'm not really sure if my age reflects on my dolls, but I am finding that as I'm getting older the things I find attractive about dolls is changing. 5 or 6 years ago I only really liked the younger, wide-eyed-, animesque molds but lately I'm finding I have a great appreciation for the more mature/realistic sculpts as well. I also didn't like anything that was smaller than an SD, but now I've been totally sucked in by the cuteness of tinies!
That being said, I'll never get rid of my beautiful melon-headed, doe eyed Soo.

    10. I go for the teenage-looking dolls. I got one who's 21 though, but I think he should be a bit younger! My youngest dolls are 10 and 11 years old, and I love children! My favorite doll will always be my Kara Klum, though. I got a total weakness for the teenage-dolls.

    12. Oh my...I'm "older" than most posts I read, though I do not think my age has any influence on which dolls I choose. I've been collectiung since 2000 and of the ones I chose, there was something about them...I guess you would have to say that "speaks-to-me." They are all unique and special in their own way. I do tend to prefer the larger 60cm + size dolls which vary in age from 12-19 years except for my Unidoll Ark who is an old-soul.....

    13. I haven't really thought of this before actually, haha. I do like the -slightly- young, but mature look. Maybe within the range of my age I guess. 4 to 5 years ago (just when I entered my teens), I'm finding that I like the same features that I was looking for then. Though I'm more open now to other features in a sculpt now but the "basics" of what I'm looking for generally are there. The ones that I truly like are probably under 20 or rarely very, very earlier 20s. So... I guess it's kind of within my age range?

    14. I think it definately affects my taste in dolls. I only really go for mature dolls (apart from Leeke's Mihael who I've surprised myself by falling in love with), and I'm nearly 26. It's like my taste in fiction, when I was a younger teen I liked fluffy highschool romance BL manga, now I find it hard to connect with those sort of characters and I like to read about adults (I find I want gritty men, not sparkly bishonen!). And yeah I like the cute child/teen dolls but I'm not as interested in them as I am adult dolls which I can style in more mature ways and can set up photos that are more than just cute.
Having said all that even when I was a kid I never liked baby dolls.

    15. I love sweet looking dolls!
However I don't think that has anything to do with me being 15.
Age is just A number, not a mental state or preference.
Now tell that to my Mother >.>

    16. no, I am still a tad unsure why I like dolls

    17. I would say that age only affects your taste and way of thinking, but not sure about the boy/girl/tiny preference.
For example, I never had a true interest in having a male adult looking doll.

    18. I'm in my mid 20's. Im not sure if it's an age thing but I do go for the more mature looking BJD'S. But I guess it's because also my OC characters in a book I'm writing are more mature. So I tend to recreate these characters in the book I'm working on.

    19. I'm in my 20's but I've been collecting BJDs since I was 15. I don't think my age has anything to do with it. I've always wanted more mature looking dolls but yet all my females are flat chested and have boyish figures to me so...I've always seen my characters they portray as more mature too but I think for me my first was an MSD and so all that followed were >.<

    20. Well no I prefer the teen-adult aged dolls but I also love the little childish ones cause they're so cute. X3
