Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. Im 18 with a D-L Maya, who looks about 15-16. I probably wouldnt own a doll who looked any older than 30, or anything younger than ten. I tend not to associate well with children

    2. I got my first doll at 14 and made him 19 years old. I think that's because I was so excited about 'grown ups' as a concept and because I could do more things with his character. My second doll was also 19 (as was I at the time) but that was more so she could partner up with my boy. My two latest doll purchases will both be in their early 20s (25 and maybe 21/22) and I myself am 20 now too, so I think it definitley reflects in the age of doll that I get. As for styling I don't think that's really much to do with my age - my ideas of attractive asthetics have pretty much always been the same, although I guess they're a little more refined now. As I've gotten older and known more people my characters have expanded and I've grown to add a few characteristics to the things which I consider attractive - for instance, my third on topic doll will have relativley short hair, which I wasn't keen on at 14 (as Cesavier's hairstyle demonstrates). I'm far more open to the idea of girl dolls now than I was at 14 and I'm pretty excited to own a couple of SDs now too. Also, I do want children but I don't use the dolls as replacement children because - well, they're inanimate adults  Like me on a Monday morning.. O.o

    3. I actually prefer dolls in their late teens, but not older. However, I'm 28 now. I don't like really young child-like dolls ether. I created a lot of my OCs when I was closer to being a teenager, so this might reflect the age difference.

    4. I'm the opposite. The older I get, the more I want "younger" dolls. That may be because I already have plenty of mature sculpts already though.

    5. Hmmm....I think my age does effect my doll choices in that I am better able to afford the dolls I want at age 50 than, say, a young student would. I don't play video games, watch anime, or read manga so none of my dolls are based on a character. I simply buy the dolls that I like the look of. I sometimes designate family groups but I have been known to change them up, too.

    6. Yes, age affects the kind of dolls I purchase because as I became older, I was able to afford doll that were higher end or more expensive. When I was younger, I purchased Barbies and Jenny dolls. Then I moved to Pullips and Blythe. With bjd's, its a much higher price point. I am able now to afford one doll which would have equaled twenty or more Barbies.

As far and the age of the doll. I buy dolls of all types or age ranges. I have baby dolls, younger aged dolls and mature dolls. I collect them all.

    7. I think that where I am in my own life influences the dolls I buy. As a mom to young children who are growing up so fast, I find myself drawn to Pukifees & Lati Yellows, who will always remain as adorable little kiddos long after my own are teens and beyond.

    8. I have dolls ranging in character age from newborn to 38. But the majority are 20-27. I think maybe this is due to me not really relating to much older people, and I really don't like kids. But I think that's personality related, not age related. Even as a teen, a lot of my dolls were in the young adult age range.

    9. I'm not really sure age affects my doll collecting. I'm 23 and I love my SD boys and mature sculpts. I've never liked baby-faced dolls, hence why I would never want to own a Volks or Luts (I'm such a heathen, I know.) Philippe is pretty ageless and Alexander is probably in his 20's, give or take.

    10. I don't really think my age reflects upon the dolls I buy. I buy dolls that represent characters, and my characters tend to not represent me. My characters are all ages, from children to adults. I don't have children of my own, and I don't plan on having children, but I've always enjoyed writing for and drawing children. So this hasn't changed when it comes to buying dolls. :)

    11. My boys are in their late twenties, and my girl is in her mid-twenties. I don't think my age has anything to do with it since when I was younger these were also the ages I chose for my characters.

    12. I'm not sure about age, but time and experience has certainly changed my likes in dolls :) I used to like pretty much anything that seemed cute, but now I'm much more picky about the dolls that I would buy since I know if they're just 'cute' then there's still a chance that I might not bond with it. I've lost quite a lot of money buying dolls before that I lost interest pretty quickly in but I'm determined to not make the same mistake again >_<;

    13. My age might influences the dolls I like, but I think it's more just personal preference. I'm 22 and have dolls ranging in age from 17-25(ish). I don't have children, and have never cared for younger, child-like dolls. I just like the aesthetic of mature BJDs.

    14. I've never thought about this before but maybe it does! Most of my dolls are all mature boys (SD's) so they definitely look like young to older adults. I guess 20's-30's. Which makes sense considering I started the hobby when I was about 26 (31 now). I like MSD's but find I have no characters that I'm looking to have dolls for and tiny's are cute but not really a want to own for me.
As for the style of clothing; that depends on the character. Some are formal and some are comfy and some like silly, playful printed T's. Kind of like me... lol

    15. Well, objectively, I like to get dolls that appeal to my aesthetic age-wise, looking somewhere like 19-22. Mature, but still fresh and young :p Though I wish those faces came in MSD size :o

So current style: boys and girls, mature SD, street style clothes

I like other doll styles enough that maybe my tastes will change some day. But today is not that day :x

    16. i think that my mental age (immaturity) determines the ages i choose for my dolls and the types of dolls i like. there are lots of very mature, 'womanly' or 'manly' looking dolls with beautiful sculpts around, but i can't really bring myself to buy them often because they look so adult (there are certain exceptions if i really really like the sculpt).

i don't feel like an adult at all despite being in my mid 20s; part of me still feels like a child or teenager who can't 'grow up'. because of this, i relate the most to dolls who look like older children (maybe 11 or 12 years old) and teenagers (up to maybe around age ~19).

dolls are kind of a therapeutic way for me to evaluate myself as well as being a creative outlet and collector's hobby. i think that if i ever begin to feel like an adult, then maybe i'll be more interested in more adult dolls - but maybe i will also be less interested in dolls? only time will tell.

    17. Hmmm good question!
I'm not aware that it would, but I'm sure it does. Although I have dolls that are younger and dolls that are older, I have noticed that I tend to think that the older dolls are a bit older than they look like.

    18. My age doesn't affect my taste - but my kids age does. My dolls are getting a little older as they do. I wonder what kind of dolls I will have when they are adults.

    19. I am 16 and I generally like older looking dolls. I only have my boy Roland at the moment and I imagine him as being 17 or so. I tend to like teen male dolls. For me I believe that my age is definetly reflected in my dolls, I only have my one boy now but am saving up to add more to the family, I tend to choose dolls that reflect the type of guys I find attractive in real life & I also dress my dolls in clothing that I find attractive on those types of people.

    20. Hmm, that's a good question! I guess the OP mean the doll character's physical age appearance, not their actual age?

My dolls are largely informed by my world-building/roleplaying. Ever since I was a child and teen I was already imagining characters who were older than me. I also find immortality fascinating and explore that with my OCs. Currently I'm in my late 20s, and many of my OCs (including my dolls) are immortal, and look adult but not old - anywhere between late teens to late thirties. I imagine the age range will simply increase as I get older. ;)

So I have strong preferences for that "ageless" look. I love and own 1/3 dolls because they have the most age versatility and don't look specifically like children. Whereas minis and tinies are generally restricted to that age, but those I've bought generally have a mature look and their characters are also old/immortal.
