Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. i suppose it does. my wishlist and the dolls i already own are mostly mature sculpts....i find the child like sculpts very beautiful, but i don't think i could ever own one

    2. Well, I'm one of the "old folks" around here, even was just about 50 when I started. I'm not sure my age really affects my choice of dolls so much as I've always liked mature or quirky ones. Even as a child I didn't care too much for baby dolls & those reborns that folks are doing scare the bejeebers out of me.

I have noticed though that the longer I collect the more I find a doll has to be more than simply pretty to attract me. That wasn't so much the way in the beginning. Then all I looked for was a pretty, mature doll. Now I'm finding that I'm drawn more towards dolls with lots of character. When I started my great downsizing, the merely pretty were the first to go. Now don't get me wrong, I still like mature, beautiful dolls but I'm finding that there has to be something a bit quirky or stylized about them to hold my interest. Have no idea if that's because I'm rapidly approaching 60 or if it's just a natural progression in my doll collecting habits.

As for my dolls' ages most of them are some type of fae so their actual age may be in the thousands of years but they mostly look as though they're 20-30ish. Definitely not teenagers but not old as a hill of beans like myself. LOL

    3. I'm 17 with two maturish-looking SD's and one MSD; I prefer SD's, especially mature looking ones and plan to buy more of them. This is mostly due to the fact that my dolls are based off of my character, which are all adults except a few. So I guess I would consider my age is not related to the kind of dolls I buy/will buy. I do not go for smaller dolls since most of them just do not appeal to me right now and I do not have many young characters.

My age does not effect the way they dress either since I am into the vistorian style clothing and as for modern clothing I mostly like young adult - adult styles.

This was an interesting question to answer :).

    4. I'm 24 and I have dolls in most sizes, from 1/12 up to 70cm. I dont really have ages for them. they're just young lol. Well Cassie my 1/6 BBB Isabela is under 12 and my little 1/12 goblin Tricksie is even younger. Other than that my others dont really have ages they just are lol.

    5. I'm not sure about age per se, but I am pretty sure the fact I have little kids now has made me suddenly squee a lot over the tinies! I seem more inclined to want them now than I do any other molds.

    6. I've been in the hobby from ages 17-26, and it's kind of funny because I still love the same dolls I've always loved, and still dress them the same way I've always dressed them or wanted to dress them. I've only owned tinies within the past year, though. I think that's because I've come to realize that bigger isn't -always- better, and am less concerned with getting a better resin to dollar ratio now that I don't have to scrimp, save, and beg quite as much as I used to.

    7. My first few dolls I got when I was 17, I never really thought too much into them other than that I wanted them to look a particular way..now I put more thought into my dolls...I even spent time thinking of their characters, rather than just getting them to look pretty...so I think age has changed that aspect of my doll buying.
Another thing is I seem to want smaller and smaller dolls...maybe a yosd next....

    8. @Gwydion: I know exactly what you mean!
I'm 28 and I have actually really tried to like and love the sculpts "everyone else" has, but they are just too pretty.
My first BJD was an expensive male, but when he came, he was just too pretty for me being able to bond with him!
The second one also was an expensive male, but he has loads of character and is in his fifties(he even has gray hair) and that's the one I am "playing" with.
I can go for smaller dolls, but they have to have a very strong personality and distinct features to be of any interest.

    9. It doesn't. I am 50, not the maternal type, no children and I have minis, tinies and teeny-tinies...

    10. Try 82!

    11. I don't think my age has any influence when it comes to the kind of doll that appeals to me ^^ My dolls don't even have defined ages... If I were to decide what age they are supposed to be, they would probably be on their late teens/mid-twenties.
The years go by, but my taste (at least when it comes to dolls) remains pretty much the same!!
My taste in doll clothing also hasn't changed... And I doubt I would like minies, with or without children around me.

    12. I don't think that age affects the dolls you like/buy, their character, the way you dress them or anything of the sort.
There are people here on the board that are older and like younger dolls AND there are also younger members that like more mature dolls (the same can be said for the opposite and any other type of doll).
Me and my friends are around the same age and we all have different tastes when it comes to the dolls we like and how we like to dress them.

    13. Does it count if I'm 20-something but sometimes feel like I'm under ten? LOL I collect Lati Yellows and I feel that my age has nothing to do with the particular dolls I purchase and collect.

    14. I don't think it does really. I am 23 and my dolls fashion etc varies from doll to doll. I have a grown up MSD, a punky MSD and a very childish Pukifee. I think it depends on how you want your dolls to be.

    15. No. I don't think yor age reflect to the bjd your buying. It's more a question of style. I see for me i have a compagny i prefer cause i love pratically all their doll.

    16. I think yes. I am young, have no plans for marriage, my dolls are 20-25. In my humble opinion, people older then me (or anxious to become mother or grandmother) prefer kids.

Well, to tel the truth, I have 2 vampire kids from iplehouse

    17. My age effect my choice as I'm more attracted to Iplehouse EID dolls they look more mature, the way I dress them up as well is more like Hollywood celebrities on the red carpet, elegant classy outfits, I guess this have something to do with my age as well, also I buying dolls is connected to age for my age I can afford this kind of expensive dolls, actually I bought 8 of them within a year, If I were younger I couldn't afford that much dolls in short time so I guess age is a big factor at our hobby

    18. I think so? I mean, I like different kinds of dolls, but the ones I consider getting are young-looking boys.

Yeah, I like some of the girl BJDs but I don't see myself owning one, so pretty much boy dolls that look my age? And some MSD boys because I think they look rather adorable.

      WOW

    19. 29 with no kids and 3 cats.
My dolls are mostly mature and I love realistic features.
I think that age affect the way you collect. Guess my BJD are artistic material... a way to create and learn new techniques and a get-a-way from stress. Taking photos of my beauties and precious is really relaxing and makes me happy. Also, I have a better gestion of money due to adulthood responsibility and would never spend on BJD without thinking through.

    20. I'm 25 and I have dolls from baby (3-5 years old) to older than me (around 29 years old). So I don't think that my age reflects anything on my dolls. But the preference...I like a doll with his/her look around late 20s. Mature look makes them more interesting! :)
