Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. I for one have children from other doll artists and have baby dolls from Ashton Drake doll company. I have barbies and as well as kelly(ies). I personally prefer my BJD's as mature (as in older than 17 yrs.) I also think of BJD's as fashion models in a sense.(which is what I collect mostly: Fashion Royalty, Madame Alexander, Tonner, American Girl, Pauline Middleton, Himstedt, and others)

Collecting dolls has nothing to do with having or not having children. Its just an hobby, like collecting stamps, cars, baseball cards, shoes and or handbags.

As far as the question goes, no my dolls does not reflect my age, they reflect what I like: Diversity.

    2. 'Agree with that 100%... It's just a matter of getting people outside of the hobby to recognize that that's occasionally a challenge. o_O

    3. hmm dunno on this.. I am a 50 something person.. my preference is largely for MSD and tinies with an occasional SD and always female.

    4. My boy is 3 years my senior, which makes him 18 this year. But im hoping to get younger kids like MSDs to make me feel older. im the youngest among my (biological) siblings, so i wanna feel older than someone for once. ^^

    5. I don't think so...

I'm 50 with two kids and I have a little of everything. Elves, vampires, tinies, biggies..

Oh I take it back. I'm not big on baby-baby looking dolls. My tinies are more quirky than infant. Infants... just aren't that interesting, frankly.

Probably the only effect my age has on my collection is that I'm financially able to buy a little of everything. (??) Really, it's more a matter of my background loving fantasy stuff than of my chronological dysfunction.

    6. I'm in my fifties. I find I acquire my dolls mostly to 'dress' them & make elaborate costumes & jewels, etc. for them. The 1/3s don't seem to have any specific age, except that they seem to be youngish adults; the 1/6s, on the other hand, have very specific characters & ages, ranging from an infant all the way up to an extremely elderly lady, from a schoolboy all the way to a towering security professional, and including artists, a financier, a courtesan, a doctor, a politician, and a couple of retirees - so most of THEM tend to be adults, and solidly adult at that, altho the children (4 of them ranging from 6 months to 11 years) figure largely among the whole group.

I would have to say this does indeed reflect my age; I can't envision myself having developed such a cast of characters when I was 20, or even 30, when most of my characters tended to be my own age or younger. Hmmm...on thinking about it, I guess they still are, for the most part! ;)

    7. Hello! bjd newbie here! I have been collecting dolls for around 20 yrs.

My collection so far does not reflect my age. I think it is about personality. I am into dolls with personality and emotion (other than the generic smiling and cheerful face, typical of other dolls.)

I think that is what bjd dolls have by default, that other dolls don't--innate character (with or without an owner.)

    8. I think there is some reflection, but not that much (but I can't look at myself real well and give a true honest answer). I prefer some child like looking dolls, but that is often due to me going for an anime look or liking the bigger eyes on some molds. Plus with my characters I have to reflect more innocence in the female dolls over the male dolls (which is why, if looking at my list, the boys have more drastic differences than the girls).

But at 22, I can't exactly say if they are reflecting my age. The dolls are dressed as close to their "assigned" age along with a little of their personality in there. Rhiannon is dressed with a simple style and some eleborate gowns and dresses as that is what her character calls for. Simi is a baby (in the form I chose) and is being dressed and treated as such. It's all about the characters rather than myself.

    9. I'm 15, and my dolls ages are like 15-16 because I feel I can "relate" to them more. ^^

    10. Not really. My dolls are all pretty much in the 'young adult' or 'young teen' range. Most of them are older and more mature since I am (I hardly think young dolls would accurately show the darker story I want for them), but I do have younger dolls. I try to vary my characters, but age doesn't have to relate to my own, or even maturity. I plan on having a few wild and out of there dolls. :)

    11. Hmm...I'm 21 in a few days, and my 2 current dolls are SD and about my age (20 and 18).
My previous bjds were all younger than me (8, 15, 12, 1, 1), but they've all been sold, so...
      Maybe my age does effect how I can relate to them. ^^;

    12. I find that I am drawn to MSD and smaller dolls and fantasy related ones. I think it's the nurturing mom in me that prefers those BJD sizes and then the fantasy fanatic in me that likes the elves and vampire like dolls. I don't think it's age but more the type of person I am and my interests. I am in my 30's.

    13. I'm 20 and I like my dolls to look young, not like babies but aroung 10-15 so they look cute. I don't think that reflects my love for children or anything because I simply despise human children but that doesn't mean I don't think they look adorable sometimes. My dolls are the perfect children I think, they look cute but they stay quiet and don't puke all over the place.

    14. Being unmarried and childless all of my dolls are adults. At my age any child of mine would be between the ages of 32 with the VERY LAST child at the age of 11. Each one so far is married or about to be. Sorry no grandchildren as of yet.

    15. My selection of a doll is most often made at a visceral level. If possible, I'll mull it over for a time before bringing anyone home. Each doll comes to me with no pre-conceived character, personality, nothing--just a blank slate. As I interact with him/her while sewing clothes, changing wigs, eyes, etc., the personality evolves. Sometimes it takes just a few weeks, sometimes months.
I'm indeed fortunate to have a variety both in size and age and depending on my mood, I can choose the one that matches my feelings for that moment. My resin kidz represent a safe haven where there is no strife or stress. I have a real family, including an adult child who is priceless to me. Even so, it's very special knowing I have a secret world of my own.:daisy

    16. I like mostly mature dolls, but as far as expenses go, I can only afford a MSD haha. I don't mind it too much, so I'll just make do with the best that I have until I can get a larger doll. I don't think this necessarily connects to not having or having children. It's just personal preference really.

My first doll will be around 18 years of age if I can get her to look mature enough. :3

    17. Hmmm, could be...

I've always found myself imagining characters older than my own age. When I was around 12-14 these characters were in their early twenties. Now that I'm in my early twenties my dolls - and the characters behind them - mostly are closer to thirty (some deviation included - two are even younger than me and a few are over forty).

There may have also been a slight change in my taste of styles. I've always been attracted to the fantasy world, and their stlye/character reflects it. But my dolls are definitely less eccentric, 'special looking' than those earlier characters. They look and behave more average, though of course they all have their own special attributes - I guess you could say that my dolls are less 'Mary Sue'-ish now than they would have been a few years ago :)

    18. I'm 29 and my choice of dolls is varied, I have one of each right now, and one on the way, two of which are tinies, but I prefer mature Mini's to child like ones. Mostly because I view them at around the ages of 15 to 16 instead of 10 and 11. I also don't compare sizes like "well my bigger doll is an adult, so everything smaller then her is a child" I view each doll for itself. I don't have a character in mind, and then find a sculpt for it, I create each character as they come to me, or I name the doll, and wait some times she'll have a past some times she won't.
I love all sizes for different reasons and I don't think it has anything to do with my age.

    19. Oh certainly, I won't deny it! Of course age is just one factor, there is also personal preference, style... Likes and dislikes and all that but sure, my age has something to do with it.

I notice that I am not likely to be attracted to a doll that has an “older” feel to it as far as its styling is concerned. In other words, I probably would not want a doll whose styling seems to reflect something my mom would have thought was fashionable.

In much the same way, dolls that really give off an ultra young and super modern feel don't really appeal to me either since these current fashions are more like something I observe and not something I admire or partake in.

As for being attracted to certain time periods or past fashions, I think that's a completely different case because the way I view these past styles is not 100% accurate to how they really were. It is a heavily altered image that I change to suit the idea I have in my head.

      That makes sense, right?

    20. I think it does, especially when you look at the clothes that owners put the doll sin.
In my opinion older collectors like the softer looking dolls, smiling and such, also tend to go for girl dolls rather then boy dolls. whereas the younger collectors seem to be going for boy dolls more and more.
I am a fairly young collector and for some reason seem to bond more with the male dolls myself... possibly because i look like a boy xD
