Does your age reflect on the dolls you purchase?

Oct 22, 2005

    1. hmm i'm going to be 26 soon and i noticed most of my boys are the older looking ones... my saint and my dollzone 70cm are the oldest of the group but when my unidoll jace comes he'll join them as well as my f31... i think my teenish looking ones are my moon and my volks mark... then there's my younger one who's my mini dz fei.... i also have 2 tinies so i think the age range is spread out here.... my age or how i dress doesn't reflect who my boys are or what they dress as.... Quin for example whos my SA Saint... he's older then time it's self but he dresses up in his gothy bondage clothes because it suits him... i'm planning on perhaps adding a little girl to my bunch but it's up to how she'll fit in my stories....

    2. yeah...i'm going to be 20 on Saturday but my social age is much younger than my real age...I look 12 and it's deceiving sometimes because I am in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (high functioning autism) and I often act younger and have interests that are younger than my age group.

My Lilly is 15ish, my Baha is 9 and my So-Ji is 6...my Isabelle will probably be around 10/11 or so...

    3. I'm 38 and I've got a wide range of doll-types, too. Just last month, I finished painting my Volks SchoolHead B, which is an extremely rudimentary anime schoolboy face... and a few weeks later, I finished painting my Limhwa Tan Mano, which is an extremely lifelike face full of crags and crannies and irregularities. There's a Sweet Dreams Fetal-Position Rei-Tenshi, who is chubby and unreal and naked and has pink wings... and there's an SD16 Yukinojo, who is all angles and muscles and cheekbones. There's a fleet of SD13 Tokyo Boys, who are slightly-more-stylized but still cute & anime-like... and there's a gaggle of tanned Iplehouse men, who are willowy and elegant and mature-looking. There are normalskin schoolboys, and beautywhite goths, and rock-stars and ex-cons and demons of all colors.

For the dolls' ages: Most of the 'human' characters are teenagers of indeterminate age between 16 & 20; some look much older or younger than they are; the oldest one is 25; the youngest are 14-15; and the demon/imp characters don't have ages. None , interestingly, are children/babies. Hmm! I can't make an assumption about the "child substitute" thing one way or the other-- among the other Child-Free Female collectors I know, about half of them shun all child-dolls, and the other half love the chibis & kids. I'm sure there's a study in there somewhere for some scientist.

For their clothes, I'd like anybody to make any kind of solid assumption based on the stuff these guys wear. XD They range from bluejeans to uniforms to leather hot-pants.

I just don't think I can make up my mind, is all. And as I get older, why should I have to? I like all 31 Flavors of boy doll out there! So even though I only collect boys (Cadet, I'm sorry to wreck your "old ladies collect girls" theory so completely!! XD), and I have a definite preference for large dolls, I still find myself with a melting-pot of a collection.

    4. Hmm...seeing that I am a 16 yr old who is trying to get out of the house and admires people who have made a success living on their own, I believe that is one of the reasons I adore the more mature dolls. I usually don't take a liking to the MSD or Yo-SD. I think that is one of the ways it affects my boy. I want him to wear casual clothing, suits and ties and such.

    5. I am 13 now and my dolly is 16-17ish haven't really thought about her age to mine....

    6. I am 13 now and my dolly is 16-17ish haven't really thought about her age to mine....

    7. My doll are my age or just a tad bit older, except for Lacuna whose a vampire

    8. I'm 20, and my first doll will be around 18 yrs old, a senior in high school. I like the teenage looking dolls personally (I only like SD's) and I feel like I'm still a teenager myself. I definately do not feel like 20, and heck, I don't even look 20. I look a few years younger. Maybe thats why I like the SD's. Also all of my characters are teenagers. I feel like I can do more with them too...and I won't feel like a pedophile if I pose then naked. I also dislike children and don't really want to have any. I had baby dolls when I was a kid, so I don't want them now. I want a more mature doll.
So yes, I feel my age does impact the dolls I buy/will buy. I relate to teenagers more, and that's what I will buy.

    9. Am I the only one whose dolls don't have defined ages? I never look at them and think they're xx years old :sweat

Maybe it's because I have no dolls smaller than SDs and therefore all my dolls are adults anyway. I find some tinies adorable but I have no desire to own one.

Regarding outfits, I notice that I buy two kinds:
      - punk, goth and similar styles that I wore as a teenager
      - bohemian, gipsy, cute, casual styles which I wear as an adult

In other words I get them the kind of outfits I would (or used to) buy for myself.

    10. I'm 18 going on 19. My little girl is 14, and my bodiless boy-to-be is going to be a couple of centuries old. So I don't see any relevance of my age being reflected unto my dolls.

I do prefer the younger ones because I know I would feel uncomfortable with adult dolls and their size. :sweat

    11. Heh. Only in the sense that ALL of the human ones are younger than I am (who wants a tired looking middle-aged doll anyway? Although ... that *might* be interesting without the tired part...)

They don't have any particular age, except for Kenshin who is 28 and Battousai who is about 10 years younger. But that's because those characters are pre-defined. Never really thought about it, truthfully except that they are all too wrinkle-free to be much older than 25 - 30, tops.

Now MAYBE that is partly why I get elves? I don't think so but... obviously elves can be ancient.

      Ditto vampires and demons.

I obsess over having turned 50 last year for the same reason some of you who have just ticked over into the 20s do. It just doesn't FEEL that old inside - most days I'm just a big kid as far as my psyche is concerned. (And frankly... some of the more 'grown up' adults I know are a real snooze. They've forgotten how to play.) My mirror says "you look like your mom" and my scale says "one of you get off."

So yeah, I don't worry about the dolls. We wear what looks good at the time around here, we like kimono and punk and classy stuff and sock clothes... whatever works.

      I suspect what

    12. I've never liked pinning a character (resin-bodied or otherwise) to a specific age...although my dolls do have age ranges--Vasya is sort of mid-twenties, Rada is in late childhood/preteens. but as with you, that's kind of because of the sculpts/sizes.

    13. Hmmm, let's see, does my age reflect my dolls? No, I don't think so - considering that Miep is about 4 or 5 years old and my Sprite will be ageless as she is an elf. Growing old is mandatory and growing up is optional, I like to live by the latter.

    14. Nope, not for me. ^^ I love the more mature looking ones, rather than the cute and teenage like ones. And I am 17.

I like the guys to be.. kind og ruggid and more tough looking(They are hard to find in my eyes.. ._. ) and the women to look.. mature and look like they are full od wisdom. I do love cute and adorable molds, but.. not really my thing.

    15. I am new to all this bjd stuff (first doll is on her way - Fdoll Amber), but I don't think age has much to do with it (I am almost 24). The dolls that I have pegged for potential later purchase are a variety of ages. I think I hit on the personality in a certain mold rather than the age factor. But for some odd reason I don't think I will ever own an SD sized doll. Just don't want one. My favorite is the MSD size, but I got a tiny first just to start the whole experience. That seemed to work out ok in my mind :) And I didn't get too small of a tiny, so I figure she and someone MSD sized could interact on a pretty good level, yes? And I guess I am lacking in the creative department, cause I just can't develop a character without seeing him/her in person. Go figure.

    16. I am 36 - no kid. I have 12 SD, 1 MSD and one tiny. I just started this hobby last year, so I am pretty new to this. I do not think it is reflecting my age, but my favorite doll companies are Luts, CP and Volks. As my preference changes, I also like realistic molds as well.:clover:clover

    17. I'm a 25 year old female with no children yet. (and deffinately not planned for awhile at least.) My dolls are a pretty big range. My youngest character doll is 5 years old, my oldest is 29. As far as how my age plays into this, I'm not sure it does. I do think my gender and preferred family structutes are what more strongly influence the dolls I gravitate towards. I love yo-sd size dolls. I see a cute little tiny and can't help but coo. But I can't immagine my tinies without a big brother/sister, cousin, or someone to take care of them. call that my maternal side, loving kids and wanting to immagine them in cute little families.
If you had to say which dolls I gravitate towards, it would be big boys (63-70 cm) and cute tiny yo-sizes (26-30 cm). But even that doesn't describe ALL the dolls I have...

    18. I am 17 years old
but when I bought my first BJD i just turned 16. I had my entire family involved with the purchase. My sister helped me pick my doll. But I though she was helping me pick one that would suit my character but instead she was a spy for my mom. She was making sure that I didn't spend anything over than 150? Which I mean it isn't bad to find a MSD BJD thats 150 but the really good ones that I wanted where more around 200-1000 bucks? So I think my age really did in compact me getting a doll. My family thought I was going to buy something that was just going to collect dust. But now that I am turning 18. All my responsibleness are over the hill. I have also matured in my hobby I am now developing charcters and a personality profile, when before it was more of "oh thats pretty I want that". Also I have just learnt that I don't always have to have my families acceptance for the things I do or buy. I think at the time when I started this hobby i was looking for my families okay. Now I am kinda like what ever I make my own money and I do what makes my happy and that doesn't need anyones approval. So now I am selling the dolls I have to get the ones I really wanted.
The ones I have are more 2-5 year old, when I really want ones that are 18-20 year old.

    19. Well, I don't really care if I have any really young child dolls or not. I have a few, but they are more my mom's than mine. I like kids, but I don't have any, and I really don't have any desire to either, so that's probably why. I like to pretend that my dolls are dating and stuff, but having kids? Not so much.

As for the clothes, I like anything from historical costumes to ballgowns to casual stuff that I would wear myself to really sexy stuff or costumes. It just depends on my mood. I don't think it will change much with age though, I used to dress my barbies the same way when I was little. I had this obsession with lingerie, even when I was a kid. Strange...

    20. I'm 30 (not planning on having kids) and i prefer tall male dolls, 63-70cm that look older.... not old ><, but between 20-30. I do have young characters that would fit younger looking dolls and if one day i get to collect all my older characters, i'll probably go for the young ones.
