Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. omg that was frecking awesome XD i love you right now seriously. i'm in love with your boy.

and just to add i will soon have tinies who smoke XD and it will be fun props to make.

    2. I've smoked a few times, but I'm not going to make it a habit. It's relaxing when you're stressed. I've probably only smoked about 5 or 6 cigarettes ever, and I haven't smoked since June or July. I'll admit, I'm one of those people who does find it "cool" looking at times. However, I know the health risks and know people who have died from those health risks, so I will never become a serious smoker. And I don't think smoking is an anti-social habit at all. I think I would consider myself a "social smoker" in fact. When I'm around other people who are smoking, I might have one myself, but that's the only time I ever have, especially because it's an expensive habit and I don't want that drain on my wallet. Drinking in excess and driving fast are dangerous too, but people still do those things. I think people will always smoke, even though they know the health risks.

It doesn't bother me at all to see dolls smoking. If it's a habit of theirs, it's part of their personality, so who cares? It is the doll owner's choice so no one else really has a say in it. I don't think Tae-Jun is going to be a smoker, but a future doll of mine may.

    3. Because our dolls' lives are not our own. I don't smoke because I don't want to risk my health, but maybe my doll's character doesn't feel that way? Maybe he is from a different time and place? To me, having my dolls smoke doesn't make smoking cool or glamorous, it's simply part of their characters. And those characters don't necessarily share all my opinions, my life style, my beliefs etc. You're making the mistake a lot of people make when they try to make too direct a correlation between a doll's character and the owners actual life. Yes, my characters came from my brain, but that doesn't mean they are just like me. That's the beauty of fiction. They are themselves both good and bad--that's what makes them more like real people to me--they aren't perfect and have flaws.

    4. I have one that does, yes.
Why? Because it fits his character.
      Next?

    5. smoking whether or not by owner or doll is just another one of the many habbits people have grown accustomed to. it's something that's been around for almost forever and it's not going away. everyone has their reason to smoke and i'm sure they know of the health risks, they're not stupid. i see more anti smoking propaganda than i ever did smoking ads and i still sell $7 packs at my store to people who are well aware. smoking is kinda a personality trait. i just think it's kinda ridculous how people keep attacking smokers when they didn't do anything to you. whenever i see those THRUTH and NO STANK YOU ads i feel like they're all saying one thing - YOU'RE STUPID!

and you know, we don't attack fat people like that... you may say to me, "put down that cigarette!" well, i say to you, "put down that cake!"

this is prolly something i can go on and on about. i'll try not to though...

    6. No, my dolls are all very young characters and I feel it would be in bad taste.

I also strongly dislike smoking because both of my grandparents died from lung cancer before I was born. Smoking is not seen as a positive or interesting thing for me.

    7. my granddad has lung cancer and still smokes. he feels the same way i feel about anti smoking propaganda. he's the kinda guy that fixes his own roof in spite of his health and i'll still call him a hero. people who smoke do other things too...

    8. Personally, i don't think it's a matter of the owners trying to make the doll look 'cool'. I think it's more a characteristic. I mean violence does nothing for me either, but plenty of people portray their doll's as violent. It's just a simple trait that some people have one of their dolls doing. I don't think it means that the owner CONDONES that behavior, but the character does it regardless. Prime example: My Mykal is a Vampire. At one point in his story, he killed his lover. VIOLENTLY. And he reaped the reprecussions of that act. It does NOT mean i condone people going out and killing people. And i think the act of harming another individual is one of the most heinous things you can do in our society. However, in his story, this is a horrible thing that he did, and now he is tortured by what he did.

Like i said, i think it's just part of some dolls' stories, and not necessarily something that the owners always condone doing themselves or to others.

    9. My dolls will never "smoke". I am against smoking.

I do take a little offense when smokers say that it doesn't hurt other people besides themselves. It does in some cases. My mother smoked heavily when pregnant with me, and smoked in the cramped house all the way up till my highschool years. I suffer health problems to this day because of that, and it was not my choice.

    10. It all depends on how smokers interact with nonsmokers. Some people are very polite and make a genuine effort to keep their smoke away from other people, while some are either oblivious or just don't seem to care. I think the most correct answer would be that some smokers do hurt other people.

Cigarette smoke didn't use to bother me when I was in college and around it a lot. I had roommates who smoked and I smoked a little myself. However, I stopped smoking about a year and a half to two years later and moved into a non-smoking environment. Now that I'm never around it (no one in my family smokes either) I find myself much more sensitive to the smoke than I used to be. I can't be around it for long in an enclosed space without getting a headache. Luckily pretend dolly smoke doesn't bother my sinuses ;)

    11. If I ever save up for Josiah, he will smoke. Why? Because he was from an 1880's setting. Not smoking would be a lot odder contextually.

    12. None of my dolls currently smoke, though I have one incoming who could have it suit his personality.

Do I think smoking's bad for your health? Sure. And it smells bad. But the same question could be asked of drinking alcohol! Just as many health repercussions for both the drinker and potentially for those around him.

      And yet, people still drink.

*shrug* It's up to a person whether or not they drink/smoke/whatever... and it's just as much up to them to do what they want with their own doll.

    13. None of mine smoke cause its just not in their character. My grandmother has smoked for as long as I can remember and she's still kicking. I personally think its a nasty habit. Quite a few people in my family smoke and most of them agree as well. But hey, its your dolls and perhaps it fits them perfectly.

    14. Someone takes dolls way too seriously : /

I smoke yet my dolls don't. There are people here who don't smoke yet their dolls do. So...how exactly can it speak of the owner's character?

Yes I know smoking can kill me...but I also know that everyday getting into my car I can get killed as well. I smoke to calm myself down and I am courteous to those around me. None of my close friends smoke so I always leave the group to have my smoke. I do know where to throw them away when I'm finished...like anyone who doesn't smoke has never littered before :B

If I had a doll that smoked it wouldn't be for the 'cool' effect. It would be for several reasons such as the passing of time, contemplative thoughts, the character sharing my ideal of 'everyone dies sometime', to give a forlorn mood, or even to give the feel of the old movies.

It's already been pointed out how smoking is not anti-social even to those, like myself, who are shy and usually quiet. I've seen people have their dolls indulging in far worse but it adds to the character and it is THEIR doll.

And to be honest I don't really think people are worried if they're putting you off from a mold considering how you aren't too worried about insulting others.

    15. I haven't gotten around to taking pics of my one with a cig, but I'm planning on it. It's just a part of the doll's character though, and probably not something I'd try to glamorize.

    16. In the case of Patrick, who is the only doll of mine who smokes, it's because it's who the character is (and chain smoke, he does). It's not intended to make him look cool at all, really. He (the character) doesn't like it. His girlfriend doesn't like it, and he tells his kids that they should never, ever pick up the habit, but he can't seem to quit permanently. He has a stressful job where a lot of his colleagues smoke, and so he just keeps getting pulled in when things get tough. In the story, I hardly glorify the fact that he smokes - but like a lot of real people out there, he just can't quit. It's his main vice, and I guess there are worse habits he could have. The character grew up in the late 60s and hung out at rock concerts. It's just something that I see him getting hooked on, as he never was into hard drugs. I hate smoking, but sometimes you just envision that the character smokes, and that's how it goes.

Maybe the intention isn't always to make smoking look cool? The one time I've used it in a photostory, my intention wasn't to show Patrick as cool, but rather as a gritty, wistful old man who has seen and been through a lot of things. He's got wrinkles, probably more than he would if he was a non-smoker, and he's hardly glamorous.

Patrick (the character) lives to be a very, very old man with lungs as black as coal. His non-smoking, teetotaler girlfriend, who is always nagging him about smoking, dies well before her time. And, admittedly, probably because of exposure to the second-hand smoke. That's just the way life is sometimes, so that's how I've chosen to portray it through the doll, and the character.

    17. My angel smokes cause its the embodiment of the dark spot in his reputation. I don't believe in ideal creatures so his character isn't ideal and totally "white".

I'm smoking myself and its just a bad habit now, habit that I can't quit cause I like it, its calming me...

    18. Kinda funny that main reasons people are put off from smoking are because of health risks and the smell. Those reasons apply to me too, but the one thing that puts me off from smoking is the cost. I'm not too keen on spending so much on something that will disappear in due time. :sweat

That aside, my dislike for smoking doesn't stop my characters from smoking. I don't have any "smoking" dolls yet (though in the storyline Hikaru does smoke for a short period of time after he finds out that he's dying from a disease. He has a crappy life as it is so it's like, "oh what the heck," to him. I wouldn't exactly call him a smoker though...), but one of these days if I feel like bringing Genndy home--he'd be my first smoking doll.

You shouldn't reflect too much on the dolls' personalities and habits upon the owner. It's the same for authors with their characters; we can't have perfect little angels living perfect lives in perfect worlds. I hate killing--but Conifer has tortured and killed numerous people. For some of us, the character grows on it's own far, far away from our control.

    19. My boy Raijin smokes.
Raijin is a character I'm writing on, part of a larger universe that I've formed in my head with its own person gallery and such. I write realistic stories, not butterfly stories with happy endings and people that are always smiling. I write the harsh reality as well as the little details that can make humans happy, and therefore I add realistic elements to my characters.
Smoking seemed to suit his personality (please don't ask why, but if you saw a guy like him in the street, you wouldn't be surprised to see him smoking quietly by himself). In reality, many people are smokers, and in Raijin's case it's actually really just one more element to make him more unhealthy for himself. x'P
I don't think smoking is smart, don't get me wrong. I smoke too much myself, and even though I don't feel like giving it up I would never encourage anyone else to do it. I wouldn't give it up because I like smoking *slams head into wall*, and I'm generally positive concerning if I should be so unlucky to get cancer or some shit from it, life has its moments of bad luck. I just really can't bring myself to care
So yes, my doll smokes. But Raijin is more than just a doll I take pictures of; he's a person I've formed in my head, and alter ego that is written in words to make things interesting. - And because I love writing!
When all that's said, I'd like to refer what HikariKun said; the doll's personality and such doesn't have to reflect the owner's. In my case it does, but that's because Raijin is written as a (male) alterego for myself, and we have our similarities.

      So do remember kids; don't smoke. 8D (yes, I suck x'P )

    20. Enki [the doll] is Persian and smokes from a hookah. It's part of his culture, and something that is very much a part of who he is. He was originally an SD sleeping vampire Woosoo. He was always squinty eyed and smiley, so we would joke around that he was constantly high and in a good mood. So the natural progression of things went, that it only seemed appropriate [with him from a Sumerian background (he was named after Enki the god)] that he also smoke from a hookah. We also liked to compare him to the smoking Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland, but that's a whole 'nother story.

There's nothing wrong with smoking being a part of your character doll's storyline. It's all fiction anyway, no one is literally forcing smoke onto his little inanimate resin-self. :goldstar So no worries.
