Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. My dolls don't smoke, it just doesn't fit their characters. Nor their world... (In my characters' stories they live in another realm) I don't think there's smoking in the realm...

    2. I smoke.
The character of my first doll smokes. The other one doesn't.
Smoking isn't cool (though smoke and cigarettes can look esthetic if done right).
For real people, smoking is an addiction and a habit, but it is also a choice, and shouldn't need to be explained to anyone.
For dolls smoking is.. nothing. it's a prop to communicate a fictional representation of a fictional charachter's addiction/habit, just like a tiny gun,a miniature wineglass or tiny plastic food.

To be honest, I really don't get the point of this discussion...
it's like nagging about dolls having doll-sized cars because real cars pollute :?

    3. I have two dolls that smoke....one possible smoker in the future. Really I'm 100% against smoking but I believe that when I make a character they shouldn't be the perfect little mary sue. And smoking is definatly an imperfection in my book...but that aside I know my harang smokes because he's a skitzo. According to psychological study, skitzophrenic people are more likely to smoke...and drink milk too X3 he's also a bit suicidal and believes that smoking will help him die faster since his other attempts failed. Er.....well my lishe I'm waiting on is a smoker too. Thats mainly because in her story she started as a teen because she thought it was cool but now its just a way to relieve stress. None of my chars smoke a lot tho. I see no reason to pose them with cigarettes.

      but that being said is it really so wrong to have a doll that smokes? IRL its bad but ummm....a doll isn't likely to damage their lungs from it since they don't have them n.n;;

    4. I've grown up around smoking. My mother, my dad, and my step-mom all smoke. My sister started smoking when she was about sixteen. Most of my grandparents smoke. My friends smoke.

I don't. I just don't like it. I mean, the smell of cigarette smoke has become a comfort scent to me, but when I think about actually smoking, I start gagging. That's just me.

On the other hand, though, a lot of my characters smoke. Maybe it's a reflection of my life. I don't know. Most of my characters, though, are really horrible people, and they have reasons to smoke. I dunno. I personally don't really give if someone or their doll smokes. It's their choice, and people shouldn't bitch about it.

    5. Okay, to be honest, yes smoking looks cool on a doll because you know they'd never die of cancer or get yellow teeth or emphazema (sorry about the poor spelling >.<)
But why take offense? It's one of those interesting things that people use to express traits in their fictional characters that a real human being would never really get away with. Smoking, like sex, like being a bounty hunter, like having committed some hugely disgraceful act or having had such an act committed on you, like being a vampire, is typically a way to express the complete and total isolation of that character from the typical norms of society. I did say typically though- the other stuff is usually the kicker, smoking when tacked on just places even more emphasis on it.

I don't think about it in the realistic sense at all- I'm an asthmatic so I don't and never will smoke, but if one of my boys thinks he's badass enough to do it then that's a different story. It's all about hyping up that element of fantasy- we all know that there's not really anything glamourous or healthy about real people smoking, but that's what makes it such a perfect target for fantasy- it can't/doesn't happen the way it does in real life.

Personally, I think: doll+ciggies= cool/badass whereas real person + ciggies= icky habit, dangerous health concerns
fantasty rules the world of my ABJDs- so they can smoke with no problem, but since I live in the real world (most of the time) I can't and don't condone it in people who's every aspect of being I don't directly control. ;)

    6. Absolutely not! I'm allergic to cigarette smoke so I wouldn't even play-act that my dolls do. Seeing cigs in the pictures really kind of turns me off.

    7. It isn't so much posing a doll with a cigarette as it is an individual who prefers to smoke, for me at least. I never "pose" my dolls [hypothetical dolls] - I just aid them in their movements and motions. Cigarettes are harmful but so is resin dust. We all can choose our vices in life.

I don't quite get how smoking can be an antisocial habit. Especially considering it's a learned behavior picked up from social interaction. But hey, some characters are "filthy, disgusting [and have] antisocial habits" so wouldn't it be fitting?

These questions seem to stem more out of naitivity and vindiction than a concern to debate, but whatever. Some characters I have in mind do smoke; although, so far, none of which I've obtained do. Two characters I've been saving for are chain smokers ~ one is a chemical junkie. <3 She can always be found balancing a cigarette in one hand and in the other, a cup of black coffee with Jack Daniel's Whiskey as cream and sugar. She may even do heroin, I'm not sure..wow that was off topic. She does these things because they render her life more livable, ironically enough.

Does smoking make her "bad-ass and cool"? I don't think so..? She's more of a lover than a fighter so I wouldn't call her a "bad-ass" per se. She fumbles with relationships and I don't think that would constitute as being "cool." So, no?

      Do I smoke? I have but I've long since quit ~ probably before the BJD thing happened. I can't waitress in some restaurants because I can't tolerate it anymore. ^^;;

I have nothing against smokers myself as they mean more social security for me. Well, perhaps not anymore..

    8. Well, I think in an image, smoking does add something to the mood and it certainly sends a certain image across, which is why, if I do use it, I use it for that purpose in all of my art.

    9. That's a bit of a leap! From smoking a bog standard cigarette and drinking a liqueur coffee to heroin...? *_* People die slowly from cigarettes and alcohol, heroin pulls you to pieces quite fast, it's not something someone does for the occasional thrill, even if they happen to be a totally-not-alive doll. Sorry, but I find this flippancy offensive.

    10. Ive always hated smoking. Not to mention im allergic! Haha. Well In any case, my doll took it up for a shoot once. But that's about it =P On occasion because it fits her look. Though it makes me sad, because her totally straight edge sister/bestfriend thing is not nearly as popular as her T.T that does bother me.

    11. Yes, some of my dolls 'smoke' or at least pose with the cigarettes. I'm not a smoker, but the main purpose of my dolls 'smoking' is to add something to the mood of the photos or their character but that's it.

    12. oh no ! :o I just think my dolls don't look cool when they smoke, and I think the same thing for human beings, especially girls ;)

    13. It's in her personality and very nature of being to do these things. She is what she is and I can't change her for what I deem better or worse. Creativity is like that, pieces of art [I consider these dolls to be just that] are organic and cultivate themselves freely. As an artist, you merely harvest these ideas and communicate them through different mediums and vessels.

Also, I'm not condoning cigarettes, alcohol or heroin. I'm even an adamant member of preventative drug abuse organizations so the last thing on my agenda is to inspire others to be addicts. But despite this and despite my own convictions, I'm an artist first and foremost and this is what came to be of her character - to alter it because it doesn't fit in with my ethics would be an injustice to my art. Perhaps I'm just too liberal artsy to be palatable for some. I don't know, it's like having a gay son when you're against homosexuality ~ you have to accept it for what it is.

Be offended, it's art. Its purpose is to move you.

    14. It's the manner in which you said it, not that you have made your doll do it. Plenty of people have dolls addicted to a whole array of different things and I don't object to that, your doll = your choice, but I haven't seen someone so easily tack on 'she may even do heroin...' as if it is as simple as picking a book outside your usual genre or taking a different walk home from the shops. Cigarettes and alcohol are pretty much a part of everyone's lives, you can't move without bumping into someone who has experience of one or both, but heroin is a lot more serious a 'lifestyle choice' than having that dash of whiskey in your coffee.

It's not about being liberal/conservative at all, I am quite liberal (believe it or not), and as a writer and an artist my characters do go to dark places but none of them are beyond my control. I've done some awful things to my characters  but I've never touched on the subject of drugs because it hits too close to home. A very good friend is now lost to me because of heroin and I can't let flippant remarks about it pass by.

    15. Nope... mainly I have tinies that are too young ;) And my mini would not smoke, it's not in her character. She's not the kind to get addicted to anything but candy lol. My incoming girl is another story.. perhaps not smoking, but maybe another addiction of some kind (mainly "harmless". For myself, I could never have a doll addicted to something terrible, it just conjures up bad images and I'd rather not subject my thoughts to that (that sounds weird I think, but makes sense to me).

    16. I have three dolls that smoke. One is from the early 20th century when smoking was still fashionable and people didn't know cigarettes kill. One smokes as a bad habit she tries to kick now and then, but fails. One has a complicated story, but it comes down to him hoping to shorten his life span of several centuries to several decades.

I don't like smoking myself. I don't like people smoking in my presence. I don't like the horrible smell that comes with smoking cigarettes that clings to everything and keeps on reeking days after. To me smoking is disgusting, but smoking dolls don't bother me personally.
Yes, it may give the wrong image to young impressionable minds that smoking is cool, but with these kind of dolls the same young minds may also get wrong ideas about sex, drugs and rock & roll through this hobby. The extremes leave a bigger impression than the average and there are quite a lot extremes in this hobby. This does not make smoking right, but let's put it in perspective.

Back to smoking and why a doll would smoke. I agree that people not always want perfect dolls and may give them a flaw by letting them smoke. I have one smoking doll who doesn't know any better, one who is flawed and one is just plain stupid. It is part of their characters and I made them that way. It's not that I say smoking is okay, but it suits them and they are more than just smoking dolls. The cigarettes are only a small piece of their total characters.
My other 13 dolls don't smoke, btw. ;)

    17. I don't smoke. My grandfather and grandmother both died of smoking related diseases. I have severe allergic reactions to smoke and I tend to choose friends who don't have the habit. I find my habits in Japan to be much more reclusive than in NY because I find smoking so abhorrant. Strangely, my father is a bit of an alcoholic but I do not find drinking so repulsive.
My characters (of which I am slowly building up my doll collection around) do not smoke because in their world in my head, it has never been an issue. Jon is only 14 and not a "bad boy" by any means, though his mother spends most of her days sauced and his father has... shall we say... issues. But the one issue I will not touch is smoking. I always wondered why, when excessive drinking has harmed people far worse than I've seen smoking ever do.
Then I realized that I never worry about my characters having body odor either. All I can think of when I see a cigarette- whether a doll, a real person, or an anime character is holding it is "boy, that must STINK!"

    18. My boy is 14 and sweet as pie, so I don't think it'd fit very well. Maybe someday when/if I get an SD, it would be an interesting quirk for his character. ^^

    19. I'm sometimes allergic to smoke and my dad is a heavy smoker who's suffered from the habit, also my grandfather died from smoking-related disease...but, if I had a character in mind that smokes I don't see why not?

    20. I think I only have one or two that smokes tobacco.

Most of mine smoke weed simply because it's alot healthier and less addicting. As for why, well they each have their own personal reasons. None of them smoke because it's "cool", "pretty", or badass.
