Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. I HAVE smoked in my past, but I'm not a regular smoker, except for the occasional hookah. :) But I have quite a few dolls that do, though not all. Their "reasons":

Mikko and (formerly) Hansel: Work in a top secret agency, high stress job, it "calms" them (note that Kaid also work in this agency and does not smoke)

Amir: Used to work at the agency too, but picked up the habit from an ex-boyfriend (very abusive relationship) and has been unsuccessful in quitting, prefers hookahs EDIT: he has quit smoking cigarettes, but nothing else

Axl: Part of that crazy wild rockstar life

Blake: picked up the habit in art school, though mostly only smokes now if he's really upset or drinking. mostly

Billie: that's not tobacco...>.> SoCal liberal, likes the feeling

Mike: picked up a lot of nasty habits in his dark high school days, never quit most of them

Mige: only smokes pipes or cigars, very rarely. he enjoys the flavor and nicotine, picked up the habit while traveling abroad

Mithra: Will on occasion if he's with friends that are, but rarely does on his own

Spike: only when he's really upset or stressed, he's mostly quit and prefers chewing gum

Ryan: Only in very rare situations, not at all a habit.

So of my 27, that's 10 that do smoke something at least occasionally, 1 that did and 16 that don't. I think that's a pretty realistic ratio. It has nothing to do with "being cool", I never saw smoking as "cool". It's all about character realism. I wouldn't stick a cigarette in a photoshoot with a doll that wouldn't smoke in character just for the look. I think Loki might kill me in my sleep if I put one in his photoshoot. lol

    2. I think it's based on the character of the doll mostly, I imagine. I have been creating a character recently with an oral fixation and considered his habit being smoking... but ultimately changed it to lollipops instead. I don't really want a smelly character.

But I think it's all based on personal feelings. I get as passionate and angry when I see dolls doing drugs. I'm certain I've seen a doll recently smoking a bong... but I know I only feel that way because I'm so against drugs personally. I'll admit it's offputting but for the most part I just try to ignore it.

    3. I don't smoke, nor do I condone smoking, heck, inhaling cigarette smoke sends me into serious coughing fits. But alas, my dolls really don't give a fig about what I do/don't approve of.

And really, only one doll smokes. But she's also based on a character of mine who had serious drug problem during her teen years(she's 25 now), and smoking is her way of getting her fix without having to resort to something more ... hardcore. Now if I could just get her to kick the smoking habit without her telling me to f--- off. :|

    4. Nope. Because I don't smoke, and I don't know why anyone would smoke.

    5. Nope, but Kadan is 12 and allthough Chiisa is ageless, she's got the maturity and body of a small child. They're both kids.

When/If I ever get older dolls will they smoke? No, I don't like smokers that well. I have bad asthma, the smell is horrible to me, the breath it leaves behind is worse, and I don't really condone it much (even though I do cosplay characters that smoke, but I have realistic fake cigarettes from a costume store that I use.) so I don't really think my dolls would.

    6. Where are you getting anti-social from? Cigarettes are unhealthy, yes, stupid, very, but that doesn't mean smoking is anti social. All the smokers I see at my college are quite chatty. Not all people who smoke think it's cool, for many, it's a way for them to relax. Ever see Hell's Kitchen? But I digress, smoking is a nasty habit and is certainly not cool. Now about dolls smoking, there are other reasons than simply doing it for fun I'm sure. For example, the character some one might be trying to replicate might be a smoker.

    7. No, none of my dolls smoke, nor do I, heck, I'm allergic to cigarette smoke.

    8. I'm allergic to smoke - cigarette smoke more strongly than wood smoke, but even wood smoke can cause me to have a reaction.

That said, yes, I have at least one doll character that is a smoker, of the "always has a cigarette in his hands" sort. The doll is a resin incarnation of a fictional character, and the smoking is part of his character. The doll is not me, and the doll does not have to conform to my values. (I also do not drink, or murder people - the doll's character does both of these things. Why would smoking be any different?)

    9. Calling smoking an anti-social habit is a bit much. :| Blanket statements about the personality of any group is generally a bad idea...

I can't stand smelling cigarette smoke... but it's not like the dolls' cigarettes are really on fire (because then I'd need to worry about possible burning resin fumes which are pretty bad too).

Niccolo is a smoker. His character is from a setting where the effects of cigarette smoking is not all that known and he picked up the habit while he was trying to show the adults around him that he was "mature." Smoking is probably the least of his vices as a member of organized crime and the sort of person who thinks child abuse is fine because it will "toughen the kid up."

I assume many of the dolls people have are part of some sort of story and most character creation involve giving a person some vices. It would be pretty blasted boring if all our characters were perfect people or always exactly like us in values.

I know plenty of smokers who know how bad smoking is but smoke anyway because they decided they don't mind taking their chances with the effects of smoking. People pick what they are willing to risk. Not every smoker ends up getting a giant hole at the base of their neck like how the anti-smoking commercials always try to scare people with...

    10. Loiso does not smoke, beacause he is elf:) I never imagine him with cigarette.

    11. Yes, several of my dolls characters smoke. There are also those who take drugs, engage in questionable sexual activities and some that even commit murder.
I write adult stories about adult things and sometimes that includes sad and destructive things or stuff that makes people crinkle their nose and judge.

    12. I've never been a smoker myself, but I have a few who absolutely do in-character....

See, my Victorian fairy court guys (Julian, Ashley, Fergus and Rone-) are sort-of the designated "Bad Boys" of my crew. They play at being human, fancy themselves Decadents and scoundrels, and so gleefully embrace all kinds of vice.

When I pose them as a group, it's always with props of a... questionable nature, let's say. Alcohol, tobacco, fire-arms, gambling items, vintage girly-pictures, you name it. They have quite a collection, right bunch of rogues that they are, and both their hookah and a set of cigarettes and cigars are part of that.

    13. I don't smoke, never have. The smell of it bothers me greatly. I had an hour-long bus ride to school from 2nd grade through high school graduation and was surrounded by so many smokers I could hardly see two feet in front of me. I smelled like an ashtray all day, every day, and it bothered my allergies horribly. At work I used to sit next to a guy that smoked every break and reeked up my desk with the stench coming off of his. I hate the smell and I have found smokers themselves on the whole to be incredibly inconsiderate. As recently as last year I had to stand in line for a ride at an amusement park between smokers who didn't care which way they blew their smoke or next to whose shoes they dropped their cigarette butts.

That being said, I think smoking looks cool. It's just one of those unexplainable things. I could never live with a smoker in reality, and I don't even like being next to one, but there's just something sexy about the idea of it. If it didn't smell so horribly (and yeah, kill you) I'd probably be a smoker. I got a cigarette accessory for my doll because I think it looks hot. It's just a piece of plastic, and it's not hurting me or the doll, so I don't see what the problem is with dolls 'smoking' in photos.

What's a whole lot more disgusting to me is the fact that people take pictures of their dolls posed in front of mounds of trash, stacked dishes, half-eaten plates of food, and open toilet lids. That's utterly disgusting to me. Those are real germs festering there.

    14. I used to smoke, and sometimes do still indulge in a hookah. Haven't touched a cigarette in quite some time, though.

Of my 28 current and/or planned adults, only one started because of peer pressure or thinking it was "cool".

Spencer - used to be a chain smoker. Quit because his husband has a high intolerance for it. Still smokes hookahs, and will indulge in the occasional cigarette, but it's rare anymore. Started in his teens, as a coping mechanism.

Lily - used to, on a regular basis. That slacked off when she met her fiance, and stopped completely when she got pregnant last year. Since having the baby, she hasn't picked it back up. Started when she began modeling, as a way to keep her weight down.

Hunter - hookahs, and non-tobacco.... one or the other, several times a week. He likes the taste, and the feeling he gets from it.

Gunnar - does, but it's rare. And usually only when highly stressed, a holdover from his wild youth.

Uriah - will have the occasional cigar, but it's not often. He just enjoys them.

Mitchie - keeps a pack around and will sometimes have one. Not a common thing, mostly when she's bored.

Amrynn - is an elf from another realm where smoking doesn't have the stigma it does here, and loves his pipe.

Jaye - usually, it's not tobacco. >.> Though sometimes, she does. Now that she's pregnant, she's quit. At least for now. Time will tell if she goes back to it or not. Started in her teens as a bit of pissed-off rebellion.

Nathan - social smoker. He smokes a bit when he's drinking, and chain smokes when stressed. Otherwise, they sit in his car untouched. Started out of stress.

Vivi - smokes cloves and flavored cigarettes, because she has since she was 12, picked up the habit from the crowd she hung out with, hasn't bothered to quit.

Tyko - another clove smoker, only one brand and won't touch anything else. Picked it up in the Underground. He's the only one who started out of peer pressure, but not does it because he enjoys it. (Though with his health problems, it's not the smartest thing for him to be doing. >.>)

So, that's 11 out of 28 who do or did. Given what I see in the world at large, that's a pretty accurate portrayal of life... at least around here.

    15. smoking is both aesthetically pleasing to me and i love the smell of cigarette smoke. that said, i have not smoked more than 20 cigarettes since i was a teenager (and i barely smoked at all back then, it was more of an experimental thing from time to time).

i love smoking. it's calming, it smells good, but i cannot allow myself to smoke knowing how harmful it is to both myself and others. this is why [in her bio] i decided that one of my dolls would be a smoker. why? it's called living vicariously.

i do not condone smoking in any way, shape, or form in real life. i am extremely envious when i see people smoking but having a full knowledge of all the disgusting, life- and health- threatening effects of it, i no longer smoke at all.

but dolls aren't real, and a doll depicting smoking isn't real. i never look at a picture of a smoking doll and thing it condones or glamorizes the habit. there is a difference between real life and fantasy. i chose to make one of my dolls a smoker, because i can't allow myself to be one.

(and for the record, i don't even have any pictures of her doing it as of yet- its more a minor story element than anything else)

    16. An anti-social habit and anti-social person are two different things.

The definition of an "anti-social habit" is anything a person does that causes harm or irritation to others, smoking is considered one of those types of habit. It wasn't always considered an anti-social habit but it is increasingly recognized as one. An anti-social person is something else, a person who dislikes being around others, two different meanings. A perfectly social person can have an anti-social habit.

I was a smoker from mid high school into college but I haven't smoked in at least 15 years. I completely lost my taste for them, last time I time I thought to try one it made me nauseous as hell.

As a character trait I use cigarettes to say something about the my dolls. Magnus smokes but he's immortal, same with Bainbridge who is immortal and fidgety. My other smokers, one is a cat walk model and the other is only a smoker when he's out drinking.

    17. While I don't smoke myself (aside from the rare hookah and once upon a time a bit of MJ) several people I love very much do and despite all the horrors of smoking and second-hand smoke, it never fails to bring up fond memories when I get a whiff. None of my dolls smoke, and only one future possible character smokes, but I have no problem with people who have characters that do. Maybe it's cathartic - a way to keep themselves from smoking - or maybe they're living out a fantasy, but more likely they just made a character that smokes. I don't think it's antisocial or disgusting or any of the other things I hear thrown around a lot.

    18. While I do not smoke myself, neither do my bjd's- their characters and age do not have smoking as one of their traits or habits.

I do not mind dolls smoking- it kind of sets the mood. And I don't get bent out of shape or have judgemental assumptions about the owner of the doll- I look at it at the character of the doll the owner is or has created. No big deal.

I have to say though, I do think it is dependant upon what your character/storyline is. My 1:6 scale fashion dolls (fashion royalty, Silkstone Barbies) smoke quite a bit and drink too...Maybe it goes with the runway and modeling....and cigs are the easiest prop to make.

I have a problem with this antisocial behavior judgement of smokers-....I grew up in the 60's and 70's as a kid and everyone in the family smoked except us kids...it was considered the 'in' thing back then at parties, dinner, etc. my dad and grandfathers smoked cigarettes and cigars during the day, and had a pipe while reading the paper after dinner with their coffee....and they were extremely loving, friendly people. I never remember anyone in my family blowing smoke in someone's face, etc...while I do not condone smoking as it is bad for one's health=-= all in all, I would say that is someone's personal decision as well as their dolls' decision....

    19. and I've been totally put off Luts' Breakaway because the site photos show him with a cigarette in his mouth.---->yeah, and SDF IDO also posed with a cigarette, a friend of mine actually claimed that's the reason why IDO so enchanted her very much, she ordered one IDO from LUTS site and two she got second hand, she's so much into IDO because he's the only SDF that smokes in the site photos.

Does your doll smoke? yes, she's a volks cristal and she smokes all the time

Does your doll smoke because you do? I dont' smoke at all

If so, why? Or because you simply think it makes your doll look bad-ass and cool (FSVO)?

I bought her second hand and she just came, at the box opening, with a cigarette stucked between her fingers, I was glad she did not burn her box on the way here..

that cigarette seemed has been there for years which means she's smoking 24/7, and the color of her lips doesn't look good:( from doing that much, obviously it's too late, she's beyond any help, I've decided to leave her that way.

    20. I don't smoke, and really dislike being around smokers. It's pretty rare that I think someone actually looks cool doing it. I agree with what someone said a few pages ago about thinking it was "something people USED to do."

The character for my next doll smokes, and will eventually manage to quit as the story progresses, as part of a mastery over his past. He's a nervous person who picked up the habit during particularly low part of his life. In this case I see it as a tool, another way to show people his weaknesses.

I think it does make some dolls look cool, but only the very mature ones. Occasionally I see some more childish sculpts with a cigarette in hand, and even if they are styled as being more mature, something about it seems very wrong... :huh?:

Anyway, I think it may be just another way people 'live' through their dolls. They can explore that territory without risking their health.
