Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. I don't smoke, and I don't think my dolls will. When i see pictures of dolls smoking, it either adds atmosphere or character. It's their dolls, so i can't really do anything about anyway.

    2. I don't smoke, and I don't want my dolls to smoke either, lol. I hate it when people smell of cigarettes.

    3. I totally agree with what you said.
But their are still people who are out there smoking. It's their hobbit.
      Natural stupidity...a habit.
So,if it's part of the character for the doll to smoke,i love it.Makes them more human.
      A real fetish.

And because it's fake on dolls. And there's no harm,or AWFUL smell.I kinda like adding that touch to them.

    4. I smoke and only one of my nine dolls is a smoker. It's in his character. He smokes because he's got a lot on his plate and I smoke when I'm stressed out. It's a thing normal people do, and it's not to "be cool". I don't intend on glamorizing it, especially not with my doll's character; he's smoked for so long and so much that he coughs up tar if he tries to run a mile.

It's fine if people don't understand why have dolls pose with cigarettes. Sometimes it's just the atmosphere, like a good like film noir movie from the 40s. Anyhow, I prefer being a smoker and having my doll smoke as long as it means not assuming silly things and making a sweeping statement about people who choose to do something that eases them, however unsanitary and risky it may be.

    5. I honestly hate smoking also, but my most recent boy I am going to make him smoke. The only reason I am going to do this is well his long back story, he is very hard minded and depressed and is using smoking as a way to shorten his suffering. So no, I don't use it because it looks "cool" or even "bad ass" but because of my Taylor's back story and that is the only reason I would ever pose a doll like that.

    6. Wow! Old post, but it seems I never actually responded. Why not?

I hate the smell of cigarettes. They give me a really bad headache and I hate the smell of residual smoke on clothing, hair and whatever else. That being said, at least three of the characters my dolls represent smoke. When Patrick and Ron were young, smoking was something boys their age in their social scene did to be cool (it was the late 60s, early 70s). While it started out as a social thing for both of them, it turned into a habit they detest and they have both been struggling to quit for years. Patrick has quit several times, but at stressful times in his life, has gone right back into it. He probably will never be able to quit for good. The third character/doll who smokes is mostly a stress smoker - he picked it up as a teenager, stopped for awhile, but then became a full-fledged smoker in university due to the stress of the work and other things that were going on in his life at the time. He's still fairly young, so I don't know if this is something he's stuck with for life just yet. The doll representing his young self does not, and never will smoke. He's far too young in that depiction of the character.

I have another character/doll that hates the smell of cigarette smoke (and alcohol, but that's not the topic of discussion we're having) because of a bad association with a smoker in childhood, but she has to learn to accept it more as the story goes on as she's around more smokers. The other dolls are just fairly neutral about the whole thing, but don't smoke themselves - as far as I know at this point.

I'm certainly not trying to glorify smoking in these representations, and I'm willing to bet the biggest majority of people who have smoking dolls also don't have that intention. We're creating characters, and there's bound to be diversity and some realism while we do so. The reality in our world is that smoking exists. Smokers also exist and they choose to smoke for a variety of reasons. Some don't care about the health risks, some do, but can't quit. To paint all smokers, and characters, with the same brush is actually a little unfair, IMO.

    7. Nope..I hate smoke, so non of my dolls smoke...

    8. No, never! I hate smoke, I can't stand it at all. I don't even have friends who smoke, I hate the smell and it gives me headaches. Never would my dolls smoke! On the other hand they are all tinies and pretty young characters so they wouldn't smoke anyways.

That being said I have no problem with dolls who smoke and there are a lot of great pics of smoking dolls around here.

    9. I think most people develop characters for their dolls based on feelings (concious or subconcious) the have about themselves or want to have about themselves. I smoked for several years, quit for several years, and recently started back again. My dolls would never smoke, but I think its because I don't want that for myself. I guess my dolls are like idealized versions of me, and I wouldn't want to see the same weaknesses in my dolls, that I see in myself. I used to see smoking as "cool", its part of the reason I started smoking, but now I see it as a vice, or evidence of an internal struggle that can't be overcome because of a flaw in character. I'm definately not saying everyone should feel that way, I don't judge other people that smoke, but my feelings towards dolls smoking is related to the way I feel about ME smoking... Maybe it's the same for others?

    10. Yes, My killer smokes. My girl Sistole smokes on ocassion but everyone else is smoke free.

      Why?
I don't smoke personally but Surgeo my killer smokes cigs but mostely black and milds. I just always pictured him doing that.

    11. My girl, Aria, is a total pothead! No cigarettes however...but close enough!
That's just her character:) Nothing more nothing less.

    12. I do not smoke. I have several dolls that do smoke (actually, about half of my collection) because I love styling them around the 1940-1960's. Smoking was socially acceptable during that time period and very common, hence it has become ubiquitous for my dolls when styled in that era. In turn, it has become a part of their character. I also have one doll that is based off of a character from literature and television, and that character smokes, so my doll also smokes.

On the other hand, the other half of my dolls would never smoke because it does not fit their character. For instance, even if I style Bea (my Faun) in the era mentioned above, I have not and never would give her a cigarette because she has something very innocent and nature/health oriented in her character and the two things would clash to me.

I don't think that having a doll smoke makes it "a bad doll", nor do I believe that people who smoke are "bad people". It has been/is/will be something some people do. To be honest, it makes even less sense to me to consider a doll "bad" because it smokes...because none of it is real. There is no actual smoke. There are no actual lungs. The only thing left is the glamor (and I mean that in the sense of the illusion, if not the perceived status of smoking in any culture today).

    13. One of my dolls probably will smoke, but that is because it is part of who he is as an OC. He started when he was young because of his older brothers and it never really been that bad, he can stop whenever he wants but at some point he does have the urge to smoke again because well...its an addiction, when you do it for years or a long time you will long back to it. Though, in the RP/Story he is trying to stop because of the woman he fell in love with...and recently he isn't allowed to either because of an accident he is in...

    14. None of my dolls will ever smoke. It just doesn't fit any of their characters, but I also don't approve of smoking in general. Now that I think about it though, I can see ONE of my characters smoking, but only until her girlfriend talks her into quitting.

    15. I actually don't mind the smell of smoke most of the time (although I do hate getting a faceful of it unexpectedly), nor do I have an instant negative reaction to it. My dad smoked for most of my childhood so it's just something that's familiar.

I do have characters that smoke (and not all of them smoke tobacco) for a variety of reasons. One's an on-again, off-again stress smoker, one's from a culture that's a lot more lax about smoking, etc. It's certainly not just because I think it's "cool" or "glamorous". It's something people do. My characters are people (or as close to it as figments of my imagination can get).

The non-smokers outnumber the smokers anyway. If I ever have a display space I'll have to have a smoking section to banish them to.

    16. Ow, btw, i disapprove smoking, it's smelly, bad habbit and it doesn't even effect alone you but also the people surrounding you. My boyfriend smoked, A LOT, but when i told him that i would leave him because of it (good reason, ill tell just a moment) he threw it away in that same minute. He gave up his whole addiction in one second without thinking twice. The reason for this is, i'm very asthmatic and allergic and i just can't go anywhere near him when he had smoked what so ever and the smell, yech, the icky smell that stays into every piece of clothing. Horrible...but, i am not going to tell other people what they should and shouldn't do. I explained my bf why i had gave him that choice, keep on smoking and i would leave or stop and be happy together...and he choose the second one. I do have friends who smoke, but it's their business and not mine...if they want my opinion, then i'll give it. My mom stopped recently because my dad has a heart condition and it's much healthier for both of them, my dad smoked sigares...

    17. My Roger will probably be a smoker. He has a lot of pain and tension in his life, and has always been something of a rebel, so he smokes.

    18. I don't see the problem with dolls 'smoking'. It's part of the character and in photography it can be used to add to the mood and ambience.

I, personally, hate smoking. It sends me into coughing fits, the smell makes me nauseous, and I'm far too stuck in my habits from being a sportsman to damage my body like that (instead I just do it with binging on junk food).

But. One of my dolls (will) smoke(s). Because it's in his character. He is a heavy smoker and a heavy drinker and a drug user (though mostly only weed), simply because that is his character and that is who he is. And because of that there will be photos of him drinking and/or smoking. Simple as that.

    19. My new batch of dolls are based on me & my friends. We smoke. So, our dolls smoke.

If I had an issue with it, I probably wouldn't make a doll "mini" me. ;) I smoke, so of course my doll is gonna, too.

    20. none of them smoke but I want my boy to smoke, I think its for no particular reason other than to look classy or sophisticated.
