Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. Smoking is still "cool" and on the rise in Japan... so maybe that's why it's so prominent in the anime/manga pop culture? But smoking as some kind of counterculture statement... is sort of lame... because obviously that's just the image the cig companies put out in their advertising...

My boy doesn't smoke, but he likes to drink plum wine! (my favorite...)

    2. The smoking really doesn't bother me much at all actually, I never really look at it as being a REAL PERSON smoking a cigarette...

    3. I think cigarettes can be used to show time passing, since during a series of pictures you'd see the cigarette getting shorter. This interests me because it is a very simple way of conveying time, which can otherwise be difficult to portray. Also, I do think cigarette smoke is beautiful and creates a hazy mood. Doll hands are also beautiful, and this gives an reason to draw attention to them.

    4. I hate smoking and of course know the risks, but I have Edmond smoking...he doesn't have lungs nor can he get cancer...there is no smoke...so, yeah.

    5. I don't smoke, I used to long long ago, but the smell always got to me so I quit. I could never see Jun or Megumi with a cigarette, yet with Jenova maybe, I can see it.

It may be a nasty habit in real life, but there is a sort of elegance when the right person or dollfie is holding one ^_^

eta: I did end up with one character that smokes; Lan - his partner never let him do it when they were home and now that she's gone, he's sort of free to. And since he's now together with a chain smoker, he doesn't bother holding back anymore xD

    6. Bingo :) I quite agree.

    7. I can't stand smoking, I think it's a dumb thing to do, I would never want to encourage anyone to do it....

...but it's just a fact of life that for some reason, anything humanoid holding a thin white stick between its fingers looks cool. Sorry

    8. There are a few instances where a cigarette might add to the 'feel' of the picture, but no way am I condoning smoking. I feel the same way about it as you, Arkady, and I speak from experience (whole familie smokes; mom is a huge chainsmoker too :c ). My dolls and I are straight edge, lol. <3

    9. I don't smoke - never have, never will. I don't like the smell much.

      That said, Vincynt smokes. XD

      Only rarely though, when he's really stressed out, because of past bad habits. I can only guess that it's really hard to put up with Justyn and Jocelyn all the time without something to fall back on. =^^=;

    10. that's also true. I mean no one complains when all the food we pose our dolls with is mini cakes/cookies/ice creams/etc. they could get fat!!! =O

seriously though to get back on topic, it's a fact of life that there are people who smoke. which means that there are some characters who will smoke. It's part of who they are. Maybe it's sending the wrong message that smoking is still cool, but we cannot take responsibility for how others react to our pics. If someone is foolish enough to see a photo of a doll "smoking" and then goes "hey I'll smoke too!!" then they're...well. Not very smart. =P

I think you were a bit overly harsh and accusing in your wording. Thinking smoking is cool/having a character who smokes doesn't mean that the person smokes themselves or that they endorse it. Also having one doll character portrayed with a cigg shouldn't put you off the doll itself really...I mean the whole point of BJDs is that they are what you make them right? so what one person/company poses their doll with has nothing much to do with the doll itself I think. Anyway that's just my opinion on it.

      hope I didn't offend you or anyone else. ^^;;

    11. I don't smoke, I don't like smoking, but if people choose to that is their problem, just don't expect me to put up with it near me, that is my choice to walk away from a conversation if someone lights up, and I am not ashamed to tell them why. BTW yes I can be rather antisocial at times. Sometimes it annoys me to see dolls smoking, but once again it is their problem, I hope they wise up and manage to quit, but if a guardian has a doll that smokes it is their choice. I will still look at photostories that include smoking and understand atmosphere, but I still don't like it.

Corpselight does not smoke, he does worse things though, I want him to stop but he chooses not to. At least his wife is a top Biotechnition (doctor-ish future world OK?) so his health is at least well in hand.

    12. i don't smoke, i hate people who smoke and i'll always walk away from them. i wish cigarettes have never been invented but kiku smokes.

i don't think it's cool or anything but it is true that a lot of japanese smoke. (oh yes, kiku is japanese!) his character settings requires him to smoke. he's "trying" to quit but he still smokes. -_-;; (all in his past and all but we'll save the bishounen angst flapping trenchcoats in moonlight for later.)

i don't think of posting a picture of a doll smoking as advocating smoking, personally. i trust that we're all intelligent enough to know that smoking is bad and in the gallery, if someone chooses to use cigarettes to bring out a statement then it is all fine in the name of art. a rolled up piece of kitchen towel doesn't threaten anyone's health and we don't mean to advertise smoking, really. some people may not like it, but well-- whatever makes owners (that includes me) happy!

    13. Jeremie smokes because he's male, in Japan, and it's what most men in Japan do. Seriously, it's something like 80% of Japanese men who smoke. If he didn't smoke, I'd need to come up with a reason, like "he's a foreigner," "he's a goody-two-shoes," "his girlfriend made him quit." It's THAT common among men. Just about any ordinary normal guy smokes. When you see people smoking in Japanese media, whether it's movies or manga or doll photostories, it's not "glamorizing" smoking, it's simply realism. If anything, the media probably downplays it.

I smoked myself when I got Jeremie. Now I'm quitting. I think I'm going to give Jeremie even more cigarettes now. It's an important part of my quitting process that I feel I'm doing it for myself, not because I've become obedient to anti-smoking propaganda. I still hate the propaganda. (LOL) But I won't let the antismokers make me so angry I fall off the wagon! I'll take it out by letting Jeremie chainsmoke. XD

    14. Hm... neither of my boys smoke since I was in an anti-tobbaco group...but who knows their dolls could have the same out look on life like my dad who smokes four packs a day, "everyone dies sometime" so if the doll has a personality like that then it works, ne?

but I was kinda offended at the comment about smoking, because in some places it's a social event. Yes it can kill you faster, and most likely will, but you must remember that some find it relaxing or are trying to quit... or some just don't care (like my daddy!) But that's my two cents. >^^<''

    15. I'm a social smoker. Smoking really isn't that anti-social, the social aspect is usually why most people start. I have been told by people that they sometimes wished that they smoked because of how easy it is to start conversations with people.

That said, one of my dolls is smoker. His character is that of a very troubled teenager and it was an aspect of his character that I wanted. I starting smoking as a teenager because of stress and so did my doll's character. Why should it matter if I take pics of him smoking? He isn't alive so the health consequences don't matter. And I don't think that it is a "cool" thing, more like a choice that some people make. I don't judge your choices so please don't judge mine.

    16. A doll holding a fake cigarette isn't going to give you or anyone else cancer. As for real life, I think most of us here are old enough to decide whether we're going to smoke or not.

    17. I bought Camui a lighter because he likes fire. If I ever picture him smoking, it would not be for him to look cool or badass or glamourous. Just empty.

Personally, I detest the smell of cigarette smoke (or perfume for that matter). It was hell staying in China where everywhere was a smoking zone... not to mention the pollution.

I think it is an unhealthy stereotype to propagate that smoking makes guys look bad-ass. Nothing wrong with a doll 'smoking'... just the stereotype and the message sent...

    18. Fraud is a smoker. Well, he used to be a druggie which is... worst in this case I suppose. Least after he got here he just takes a puff or 2 once in a while and not injecting stuff into himself like every couple of days. He got to quit sooner or later I suppose. Its a non smoking family he had came to stay with >D

I guess he can't stay away completely drugless still >.>
Maybe he'll go into caffine next time

    19. This is so true, almost all the Japanese men I've seen smoke.

I think it's a little judgmental to think people are trying to make their dolls look "cool" by smoking. True, it is not a healthy habit but everyone has a vice (overeating, anorexia, drug use, alcoholism, anger management, anti-socialism, yaoi fangirlism -just kidding don't hit me-) I never judge anyone for that because we all like to indulge in something. I myself am not a smoker, but a few of my friends are and so is my doll. When I am clubbing tons of people smoke around me it's something I just deal with. My doll is rebellious fourteen year old boy and when I was fourteen all the rebellious fourteen year old boys I knew were smoking. LOL no great explanation for it, it is just the way life is. I think giving dolls human flaws makes them seem more real. And as mentioned before, he doesn't have to worry about all the health effects like I'd have to
