Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. Arkady, I'm right there with you. I just don't get it either and I skip or delete all pictures like that.

    2. Whether anyone "gets it" or not, it can be part of a character, because let's face it - if you get a group of people as large as my group of dolls, SOME of them are going to be smokers. So yes, some of my characters smoke. Besides, most of my characters are from the 1800s, when the health risks weren't so widely known.

    3. Among my whole crew, only one "smokes" and that is because the character he is - Sanji, the cook at the Strawhats from One Piece - does. More than once he admits he should leave the habit so it could be taken as a good advice of how bad this addiction is.

    4. Parker smokes because the character he represents smokes. I haven't smoked in a long time, but I don't think social or recreational smoking is "gross". Smoking is a habit real people have, and if you're going for realistic characters in your dolls, smoking is one quirk you can give them. I don't feel like people do it because smoking is "glamorous" or whatever; the idea that smoking is sexy isn't a widespread thing anymore in this day and age.

    5. I don't smoke, and quite honestly, I hate smoking. But my doll Ren does, and he smokes because quite frankly, he doesn't give a d*mn. He knows all the risks, but he won't drop the habit simply because he doesn't care enough to.

    6. One of my boys is a smoker. He likes to party hard, he drinks, he smokes and gets up to other questionable activities too but thats just who he is. Likewise I have another who carries a sword and a gun and his character has done things that are way worse than smoking. Thing is though I see it like writing a work of fiction and it would be pretty boring if all the characters were to good to be true.

    7. Huxley is a clumsy, ditsy sort of follower-friend sort of character. Part of his backstory is that he developed a long lasting 'Social Smoker' sort of habit from hanging out with smoker friends in high school, he's also only a 'Social Drinker'. He doesn't carry around a pack of cigarettes, but he always has a lighter handy in case a friend or colleague offers or asks.

(I, myself, am not a smoker. My older sister had bad asthma when I was younger, so I used to get so angry at my parents when they smoked in front of her.)

    8. It's a character thing. I have a few that do or have smoked in their lives, Sebastian has quit pretty successfully and Brody smokes to this day. Sebastian started as a teen because he was dumb and rebellious. His father never smoked and hated smoking so it was a way to anger his father. He struggles with elapse in times of stress. Brody is a long story, but I don't think he'll ever quit. I also have dolls that don't smoke or even drink at all. They're 'people', they aren't perfect and that's how I like it. It's not an aesthetic reason. I feel like this is more of a character driven thing.

    9. One of my dolls smokes, I think it just happened that way because I bought him second hand and when he arrived he positively REEKED of cigarettes, and even though I cleaned him very well, and all his box and clothing, and then aired them all out it took many months for the smell to go away, so it sort of became the explanation for him smelling of cigarettes in a way, like he was smoking in his box, and it just kind of stuck. In a way transferring the habit on to him I think made me feel a bit better about the whole situation, that instead of dwelling on how he was obviously treated in his former home, and being annoyed that his owner stank him up so badly, he just became the doll that smokes, and even though I am not a smoker myself, I don't have a problem with that, it's become part of his character, just like it would in any person you know who is a smoker.
Being a smoker doesn't make someone a bad person, and having a doll with a character who smokes doesn't make someone stupid, or trying to make their doll look badass, I think that's a pretty ignorant comment, the world is full of all sorts of characters, and so is the doll world.

    10. i have a one that smokes i dont have him home yet but it is part of who he is, im making him from an anime called Kamisama hajimemashita. And the carecter in the story smokes so my boy will to, i smoke myself but i dont do it beacuse its cool or so i do it beacuse its keeps me from doing other bad things. smoking is bad for you yes but i dont think that the dolls will die of cancer or so so calm down ^w^ we are only humans

    11. Yes! One is because they find it to be a stress reliever, the other is because it is just part of the character I'm basing him off of.

    12. I don't smoke, but my doll Dexter does, his character is from the 1920's, and as a grown man from that age, he would be considered an abnormality of he didn't

Personally I think smokers are being put down way too much in western society, there are so many other ways we destroy our bodies, like me being an over-eater, I would much rather be addicted to cigarets to be honest.

    13. Interesting question - okay so I can't stand smoking. It smells horrible. I have never smoked and never will.

BUT I do have a doll (actually 2) that do smoke. In my opinion it's way more interesting to see a believably flawed character because humans are flawed and it creates a gut reaction in us either pro or con.

    14. Can I just say I love this? Big One Piece fan here ^_^

I don't know if my doll will smoke or not. I assume he would in certain situations as a way to "blend in" with certain crowds, but I doubt it would become a habit. I smoke occasionally, usually only when I'm out with friends that smoke.

    15. Thank you so much, RubySpitfire. Gorgeous avatar, I must say.

I really love this thread. In every line I read it, it shows that there may be as many reasons to have a doll "who smokes" as people who own "smoker" dolls or even more, as in some of the cases there are people who own several of these smokers and even belonging to a same owner they do so for different reasons. Really interesting.

    16. I'm really not into cigarettes but if anybody is going to smoke I would rather have it be a doll. :)

    17. I have a character I may someday shell who smokes, and he does it as a form of self-medication and because it gives him something to do with his hands/mouth. I don't really approve of smoking in general--my parents both used to smoke, and I think it's pretty nasty. I still think there's something sexy to it, as well. But when it comes to other people, I can't really stop them, I can only request that they not do it in front of me. I also think it gives something to the atmosphere--it can make a character look somber, or sexy, or careless, or sophisticated. Think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's; would she look half as iconic without the long cigarette holder? Though I don't condone smoking, some of my characters (and therefore, my dolls) do smoke because it adds something to their character.

    18. hmm, 1 or 2 of my doll smokes, but I do not. Some of my friends do, but I do not think that it makes you look any cooler generally.

The odd thing is, smoking in some pictures look great, but that's mostly because of the composition. The same pic might look as cool with gun, flower, coffee mug or pen if it was placed correctly, but we tend to use the cigar.

One of my dolls smokes a lot, but that's actually because he is addicted to it, not that he looks cool with it. I don't think I have ever taken a photoshoot of him smoking (yet, suddenly I feel huge urge to..), but he tends to carry a cigar with him in photostories like an accessory. He's usually holding a cigar if he's annoyed, bored or feeling crappy, but he does not usually smoke when he is feeling fine. When you smoke a cigar, you'll get easily addicted to it, so you can't really stop smoking even if you'd want that.

And that's ultimately what is happening with my character. He would kinda want to stop smoking, but he doesn't have the willpower. He isn't a human and he's high ranked demon, so he has never had to suffer from addiction before nor give up anything. He just isn't used to things like these.

So he keeps telling himself that he can have one bad habit, and he could stop whenever he would want to, even though he knows it's a lie. And he keeps on smoking. Maybe I subconsciously want to show the bad sides of smoking and it gets you addicted? dunno. Maybe it would help if I'd write how he actually sees smoking somewhere in the stories..

But for example, here's one pretty old photostory where Syxnian smokes and smoking doesn't particularly make him look any different, but the cigar is there.

But good thread. Maybe I need to start showing it even more in bad light, I wouldn't want to give out good example from smoking. xD

    19. That sounds familiar. I know I've posted here before so whoever's read my post knows that I neither smoke nor think it's cool, yet one of my dolls smokes for part of the story. Not because she thinks it's cool, but because it's an addiction and she's prone to that kind of stuff, and all things considered smoking is probably still the most socially acceptable addiction there is. She knows it's bad and she's tried to quit off and on (mostly thanks to significant others making/helping her) and succeeded for a while, but as soon as she gets stressed out she'll inevitably relapse, and she's not proud of it. So basically what I want to convey is the exact opposite of what the original poster thought people with smoking dolls were getting at.

    20. Jany, yeah, that same is with me. :) Sometimes bad things must be shown to show that they are bad.
