Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. No, never. I'm allergic to smoking and everything associated with it is the cause of a very bad reaction...

    2. I dont think i could ever make my dolls smoke. Besides the fact that All but one of them are either underaged or a robot, One of my uncles smokes two packs a day, and it has a really terrible effect on him. I couldnt ever put my dolls through that, but if anyone else does i guess i dont mind. As other people have said, it does give the setting a bit of a mood, and i kinda enjoy that!

    3. One of my upcoming dolls will smoke. It's not a habit that he's proud of (or one that I take part in or recommend personally) but it's something that I imagine his character doing and I want to stay true to the image I have of him in my head despite my own personal feelings.

    4. I agree with you :) I don't think dolls should smoke.

    5. Since my dolls are in MY house, they won't be smoking. No way, no how! Both my parents were killed by smoking and my mom never smoked herself.

    6. One of my dolls does since he's supposed to be in a band and makes their music and lyrics so the pressure piles up. He's also a womanizer. :sneaky

    7. Yeah NO my doll does not smoke. When I started actively saving for her around the beginning of this year, it was because I had QUIT smoking in January and I made a deal with myself that I would reward myself for sticking to it by applying the money I would have used polluting my lungs to finally getting my dream BJD. She was a gift to myself for sticking to the quit and she is something tangible that I can look at and say "This beautiful doll is what I have now instead of a harmful habit." So it would be really messed up for me to put a "cigarette" in her hand. I have not touched a cigarette for seven months, am looking forward to a full lifetime of being tobacco free, and have no desire to ever have any doll of mine act out something that I worked hard to put out of my life.

    8. I understand that smoking is bad and I personally have a mild allergic reaction to tobacco and tobacco-related products and despite that I've got a pair of dolls that do smoke. Neither of them view it as a cool thing to do nor is their smoking portrayed as something exceptional or cool; it's simply a bad habit the characters have... not to mention one has been trying to quit as far as his story goes and only smokes once in a blue moon nowadays.

    9. My dolls don't actually smoke because they're made of resin and can't inhale cigarettes anyway.

Their characters do, though. Why? Because most of them are characters made up by a rebellious teenager who grew up with a very troubled childhood. This troubled teen has grown up to be a mature adult who does not believe smoking is a good thing, and doesn't think anyone should smoke... but alas, characters live on in that adult, and their CHARACTERS are a major part of him ;)

    10. Two of my dolls (one is an upcoming doll) do/will. I used to smoke, and will still socially smoke. But my dolls do it for different reasons, Zarafi does it because it's relaxing whilst he's working, and Ruki does it because when he first joined the "gay community" he thought it'd make him look cool :I

    11. I personally am against smoking in real life, but I do have a doll that smokes and has posed in several photos with a fake cigarette and pack (and I have gone as far as to edit in cigarette smoke) The main reason, I suppose, is it is a trait that goes along with the doll's established character and personality. While it's not a habit I support, I do think in some instances it does look cool in photos. In photos, while trying to accurately display your dolls character, it represents a habit and adds to the real life effect.

    12. I don't smoke. I just don't like how it taste and I like to put my money to dolls instead. :'D Many of my friends/relatives smoke, but I don't hate them for that. It is nothing off from me if they want to smoke.
So about my doll characters, yes. One of them smokes. He is adult and it fits well with his personality. He don't hate or be ashamed of it. He started it because he wanted to. And no, he does not even want to quit. He is not chain smoker, but smokes when he is angry or bored or walking or when he feels like it.

    13. Best response to this thread -- funny and some personal psychological insight.

I do not smoke. Never have; find it pretty gross. However, I have one doll who "smokes" because his character is self-destructive and, underneath his "hard"/devil-may-care façade, he's actually very troubled and vulnerable. It just adds a layer of complexity and verisimilitude to his character.

    14. I think smoke in art and photography can look beautiful when done well, and is worth using for that reason alone.

I don't see any issue with dolls smoking. They're characters and what they do is not necessarily what we do, or condone ourselves. If I did half the things some of my characters (not dolls) do, I'd either be on the run or in prison!

My character who is going to be a doll smokes occasionally. If he started because he thought it was cool or bad, that's not why he does it now. He smokes sometimes because he enjoys it, and all of us enjoy something that is bad for us now and again.

    15. Nope, none of my 3 smoke. Their personalities don't allow for it, and I don't know where to get a hold of bjd-sized cigarettes anyway.

    16. "Smoking" can't hurt the doll, obviously, but I wouldn't participate in any glorification of the habit. But I don't judge. Each to her/his own.

    17. So much this:) I have a guy who smokes, he's conscious of the damage done to his body because of it but he just likes it and as Tristiahna said, is a trait that goes along with my doll's established character and personality. I think that it makes them 'more human like' because not everybody in the world dislikes smoking after all... I personally don't smoke but, yeah. Having an smoker among all your crew who have never smoked, gives it a bit more of diversity, at least I see it this way but I also think is completly okay if your dolls don't smoke at all ~

    18. My msd, Dean, is a teenage ex-smoker with anger issues that he struggles to deal with without a cigarette. He doesn't smoke because he has found himself caring for and leading a group of kids who have lost their families and he wants to be a good influence. It does mean he has to sneak off and kick inanimate objects from time to time.

I don't smoke, I did until about three years ago, and quitting was hell. My husband does, but only outside, and I'd love for him to quit. But I admit, I use his cigarette spending to justify my doll spending - we both have our habits to feed!

    19. One of my dolls is a smoker, although I still have to buy him cigarettes (so it's actually just the character that's a smoker at the moment). He's a magician and a pickpocket, and smoking makes for a nice excuse when plying his trade (asking for a light and pickpocketing the other person, taking a smoking break when he wants to go get rid of stolen goods, and using cigarettes in his magic tricks). I don't smoke, never have never would, but it fits the character. Another character of mine uses hard drugs, which is also something I wouldn't dream of doing, but it fits his character as well.

    20. I personally dislike smoking too. However, it doesn't bother me the least to see dolls smoke. It isn't particularly uncommon so I don't see anything unusual about seeing a doll "smoke." I don't think people mean to advocate smoking by getting cigarettes for their dolls; it simply helps portray their dolls' character.

I don't have my doll at hand yet but I already have his character sorted out. He's definitely not a smoker and neither am I. Though just cause I never plan on smoking doesn't guarantee that none of my dolls ever will. They can smoke if it's in their character, it's not like they actually exude 2nd hand smoke.
