Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. Yes, one does. He has grown up without parents and been living on the streets, where it's cool to smoke, yeaaaah. Even if he knew it is cancerous to smoke he still would, because it is cool and he never expects to live to tomorrow anyways ^___^

    2. Bleh, no. Just no. While I can understand some people's views on the atmosphere or whatever it is that adds to a character or scene, I just couldn't have a doll that smokes. Smoke gives me terrible migraines, makes me dizzy, and nauseous. And I'll never be able to get past the negative health aspects. I just don't understand why anyone would do that to themselves. And honestly, I consider smoking a very selfish, rude, disgusting thing to do. When I walk past people smoking, I have to cover my face, or else I'll get the migraines and everything else. I hate seeing cigarette ends everywhere, people smoking right outside buildings despite the '25 feet away' "rule" which is usually in effect in my area, and so on.

So no. I don't have any dolls that smoke, and I won't. Ever, period. I could probably go on more...but...yeah. :/

    3. No. I'm a health and fitness fanatic and I think it's gross. :goldstar

    4. Not all people are perfect, not all dolls are perfect. My dolls don't smoke because of the prevalence of lung cancer in my family.

    5. I'm an ex-smoker. I find smoking an awful and unhealthy habit. If no one could ever smoke again, I'll be happy. I find drinking an awful habit, I come from a family that almost broke because of it. I'm against guns and war too. Not particularly keen on mafia, assassins, sexual deviants and murderers.

A doll 'drinking' doesn't offend me, a doll 'smoking' doesn't offend me, a dolls with a gun wearing a military uniform doesn't offend me, an assassin character doesn't offend me. It's a ridiculous thought. Dolls, characters and art are not here to save humanity from anything. If you gonna be offended with anything that ins't 'nice' and politically correct then art really isn't your thing.

    6. While I'm not into smoking at all (the smell is terrible and the health risks are too), if people want their dolls to hold a cigarette I have nothing against them. It doesn't necessarily mean that the doll owner is glorifying the use of cigarettes. It's just a prop, and as a lot of people have said here, part of the doll's character.

    7. I'm too young to smoke or drink, and frankly have no desire whatsoever to do the former and would never overdo it on the latter (addiction runs in the family), but one of my dolls just seems determined to be a smoking character. I don't think she would smoke, but it's very fitting with her general look and personality quirks. It doesn't suit any of my other characters at all.

    8. Yeah, it's most definitely a character thing I would say. I HATE smoking (but I don't hate/judge smokers (over the age or 20 or so XD)) but my first doll will be a smoker as it's one of the flaws of his character. I would never have one of my dolls/characters smoke just because "I thought it was cool" because 1) like I said, I don't think it's cool at all and 2) that would be some poor character development (kidding XD).

    9. My doll is a werewolf and so he knows smoking won't hurt his health. He doesn't like to smell like cigarettes so he doesn't smoke often but he will when he's stressed out or wants an excuse to leave.

    10. None of my dolls smoke, but that's largely due to their settings. Either they live in a fantasy realm where health is very well understood and people's health is considered a common good (due to organ transplants - and not always voluntary ones - being a very common occurrence), and smoking being seen as a crime against the state, or they live in a fantasy setting without tobacco or similar plants to be smoked. I'm not a smoker, and so it doesn't seem odd to me not to have any smoking characters. I'm honestly not that bothered by other people having dolls that smoke, though, and I think it's a bit strange to be so emotionally invested in it =/

    11. I could see doing it for a character thing if it is key to the character...but mine do not. I did in real life for a long time and struggled to quite (but did) and don't advocate glorifying it.

    12. I think it could add to the character of the doll if your on the story side of the hobby, I don't think smoking is cool either, but it can add to the story of the doll.

    13. I do not smoke, but I do have a doll that does--cigarettes with the holder. She's meant to be based on the style of the 1920s--robe de style, cocoon coat, etc.--and it fits with her personality. Kore does it specifically because she knows it makes others angry--she was told once that she was just a little lovesick girl, so she turned it on its head and gave her husband exactly what he asked for--in the most unpleasant way possible. Acheron is kind of a sleaze, with a weakness for fine things--velvet, silks, etc.--so I imagine Kore going around leaving ashes and cigarette burns on all his nice things. Then she blames the dog.

    14. I assume Sin would smoke if he could get his hands on a cigarette. He's an immortal demon, so he doesn't really care about lung cancer. He'd just do it to look cool, because he's a rebel like that.

    15. I have a doll that smokes due to her being modeled after a 1920's woman. Smoking was the thing back then and the elegance of her cigarette holder against her red lips make her classy, classy, classy.

    16. Only one of my dolls (Hikaru) smokes. I think it makes him look more mature (yes, the old cliché) and even a bit sexy. Besides, I think those small packages and tiny cigarettes are just super cute!

    17. I watched someone die from CPD so no, I wouldn't have my doll smoke.

And to be frank the only character I'd put to a doll that does smoke defies the laws of physics with that stuff and I'm not that great with photoshop.

I wish I could get incense to burn like that. (I'm fairly certain putting incense in a tiny bjd pipe isn't the safest thing but its safer than inhaling tar...unless something catches fire. Then that could be really hazardous.)

    18. Eh.... Personally, I think it looks attractive not "cool". For some reason I am attracted to smokers...Especially if they are hot haha.
And to be honest, the doll could smoke just because he/she wants to smoke. It's not about the owner usually. I haven't put a cigarette to my mouth in my life, but I do find it attractive when a doll smokes for some odd reason. I know it is bad, but I think it just adds to the appearance and their story.

    19. I, too, find it a bit silly to judge owners of smoker dolls, and, honestly, smokers themselves (simply because it's extremely presumptuous and naive to ever think you understand someone else's life and choices.) My longest running character and former doll is/was a smoker. It's not fair to assume the owner is trying to glorify smoking; in Tristan's case, he suffers from many forms of anxiety and depression. He used to be on drugs, medications, and tried once to take his own life. Do I do those things? No. (I also don't drive fast, sleep with women or ever went to medical school, for the record; characters are characters and don't necessarily reflect their creators.. just saying.) Anyway, his smoking was a physical representation of the lack of consideration he takes for his own self. It's a character trait.

Also let's not forget that this hobby draws lots of people. Some folks might do it because their perception is that it looks cool; and that's fine! Some of us are very young, some of us are older, and those perceptions of the world will always change depending on the condition and life experience of the collector. For whatever reason people choose to have their dolls/characters drink, smoke, wear mumus, wear lingerie, dye their hair, have no hair... it's all good. It's all a form of expression for that individual. :)

    20. I personally don't like smoking and I finding rather choking if I have to be in close proximity of one even when they're not smoking since the scent is just stuck on them. It's mostly because I've never been around smokers so I'm more sensitive to the smell and strong smells in general I hate. So for me, I don't see the appeal to it, even if it's one of my boys posing for a photo.
