Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. I dont smoke myself, and none of my dolls are chronical smokers. I might do one or two cigarette photoshoots when I get down to photography, but for now, no.

    2. None of my dolls smoke because I'd give them hell for it until they quit the nasty habit. ;)

I don't mind if other people's dolls smoke, drink, do drugs, use medication, use weapons or do something else that might offend me if a real person was doing it. I don't judge the owners of dolls who have these nasty habits either. It's their doll so in the end it's their choice. It's like saying someone else's doll can't wear a certain color wig because it offends you...bit odd, don't you think?

    3. My dolls would never smoke - why someone would want to give themselves a risk of cancer and a plethora of other diseases is beyond me.

    4. Being that smoking isn't allowed in so many places, and no one in my immediate circle does it when I'm around, it just isn't something that ends up anywhere in my thoughts of what my characters might want to do. Plus I've never really connected smoking with being cool. So it is unlikely any of my characters would ever be smokers. That said, I'm certainly not offended by pictures of dolls who are smoking. Sometimes it fits and sometimes it looks silly or forced, but it's not a really big deal.

    5. None of my dolls smoke, drink alcohol, or do recreational drugs. Honestly, the thought has never occurred to me. I've seen a lot of smoking dolls in the gallery, and it's just gotten old and cliche. I guess Amiga looks old enough to drink, but I don't have the props for it. And recreational drugs are definitely OUT of the question. I guess none of this stuff is in my interests or any of my girls' personalities.

I personally don't smoke or use recreational drugs, and I'm cutting down on the drinking. Trying to keep a closer eye on it at least. I try not to judge people for their vices, but sometimes don't hang out with them if they use those vices excessively to the point where it's not fun to hang out with them anymore.

    6. My doll "smokes" (or he would and will once I have the prop and his face) because his character does. So I would pose him with cigarettes if I wished to portray a moment in my character's life where he might realistically light one up.

Why does my character smoke? Because my charcters are given attributes based on what goes on in real life. Smoking, yes, is a bad and rather nasty habbit. But people partake in it for their own reasons, even though many of them know it is bad. My character happens to be one such person. Not because I think it's cool, but because it is a human habbit.

And, no, I do not smoke. But I have many friends and family members that do. I am not interested in doing it, but that doesn't mean I won't explore humanity in my dolls by having their characters adopt habbits that I might personally find gross or off-putting.

    7. I don't like the idea of smoking myself and none of my current dolls smoke, but that's not to say I won't one day have a doll that does. For me it's just a matter of individuality within my group. I want each of my dolls to have a different personality and different habits, good and bad. My dolls are humans and humans have flaws.

    8. I don't smoke myself, I've had a few cigarettes but it just doesn't float my goat.
      Either way!
I have a male character and he's a smoker, it just fits his personality.
And i just can't imagine him as a none smoker.

    9. Plain and simple, smoking is a vice.
If one is offended and disgusted by a doll with a fake cigarette, I should assume they will have the same feelings about alcohol, especially dark alcohol.
I'd take a world with cigarettes over a world with alcohol any day.

That being said, nothing can take me out of a panic attack quite like a cigarette can. Not proud of it, not in love with it, it just is. I picked up this learned behavior from my ex. Not a very good ex, but as I said: It just is.

Edit: I suppose I should add relevancy to the hobby:
Dolls may be smokers by character due to the fact that there are many psychological reasons a human would smoke, and we as humans like projecting real-world problems and activities onto our dolls, especially if it is something we have experienced or suffered from, ourselves.

    10. Kira, my only longstanding character that originated from a BJD and will soon re-manifest as a BJD, was very much a smoker. I understand that you and other people think of smoking as a "filthy" and "disgusting", but Kira is a filthy and disgusting kind of girl, so it works.

That said, her smoking isn't a reflection of my feelings toward smoking. I grew up around a "two-packs a day" dad that wouldn't crack the window when he smoked in the car and didn't give a shit about smoking wherever he wanted, regardless of his three young children and their very delicate lungs. I'm lucky I didn't develop long-term issues and symptoms from the secondhand I was forced to live in and because of that, I never smoked as an adult. Does that mean that I abhor smoking? No, it just means that it's not for me. I agree with many that smoking in fiction creates a certain atmosphere, a mood that's hard to replicate in any other way. Smoking in fiction is sexy and cool and dirty and a little bad, but usually those characters fit that description nicely. Or it provides a good juxtaposition for stress and anxiety. Again, it's fiction. You aren't hurting any real lungs here and most of today's youth think smoking is pretty gross anyway, so it wouldn't be much of an influence.

    11. I wouldn't mind cigarettes photoshoots, i mean, they could look so sexy and mature holding a cigarettes but just that. I don't want my Yuki to actually smoke, it's not a good habit for him, not to mention risks of cancer and other diseases T^T

    12. Not really.

    13. Never! I won't allow smoking in my house.

    14. I don't think I'll ever own a doll that smokes, it just doesn't appeal to me. I don't have any issue with other people's dolls being smokers though, it's just personal preference, and I can see if the owner smokes why they'd want dolls with habits that reflect their own.
I don't think I'll ever own a doll that drinks either for the same reason, I don't drink myself and don't see the appeal, but I'd still love to see peoples photos of their dolls in a pub setting drinking and smoking if that's what appeals to them and suits their dolls characters.

    15. My girl lives and grew up in a urban area with a lot of drug use and smoking. She doesn't smoke, but she does weed very occasionally when she's with her friends.

    16. One day I might have a doll "smoke" but for now none of them do, it's just not in their characters nature.

    17. Does your doll smoke? If so, why? Does your doll smoke because you do? Or because you simply think it makes your doll look bad-ass and cool (FSVO)?
Currently, none of my dolls smoke. They are all 1/6 size and look like children so you can see the problem there. I am a non-smoker, but if I had a character that did smoke it wouldn't be because I consider it bad-ass or cool, but would be an aspect of the character or related to their story.

    18. No....all of my dolls do not smoke...haha
They dislike smoke as they're very sensitive about it...

    19. I used to have two chain-smokers shelled into bjds, but none of them ever held a cig actually. I mean, no offence, but I just find it terribly tacky looking - a cig in a resin hand with some fake, photoshopped smoke... I just hate it v.v

    20. I have not read all 23 pages here, but I am not wild about seeing pics of dolls smoking generally. There are some dolls like the old boudoir doll smokers that are pretty cool but they were made in the 20s well before we knew all the risks of smoking. And some pics do have that film noire look to them.

They are dolls and they are just pics, but I am old enough that I have seen too many people die of cancer from smoking. I hate it when I see young people smoking. They think nothing will happen to them, and it may cost them their lives later. I am pretty anti-smoking, so don't want my dolls to smoke.
