Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

1. I'm sorry but that has to be the funniest thing I've heard all day and the only good pun to ever exist!

2. I hate hate hate smoking >o But for some reason Adramelech demanded a cigarette and a beer o.O Lol and I HATE both o.o It just fits him I guess.

Edit:
LMFAO! That's the greatest thing I've ever heard ><

3. I personally don't smoke (okay, I've had 2 cigs in my life and do plan on having one or two more, but that's IT.) No one in my family smokes.

However, my doll Mistral does smoke. A lot of smokers find smoking to be calming. Mistral's character is kinda messed up and in turn she smokes to help her relax and calm down. In turn, her almost bf (Vincent) will occassionaly have a cigarette. He's not a fan of smoking or her smoking, but being a vampire it really doesn't hurt him... Sometimes I think he just does to see if he can figure out why she likes it so much...

IMO smoking isn't bad if it's just one or two cigs every now and then. Now smoking all the time, that's not my cup of tea. And glorifying smoking to look "cool" and "bad ass" and all that isn't my cup of tea either (though Vincent will tend to say he looks good with a cig, which is funny, because Mistral's convinced she looks utterly stupid while smoking)

4. First of all, I find this to seem a bit like you are attacking the people who use cigarettes as a prop. It's a tad offensive and harsh.

Cigarettes create a mood, as has been said. Using them in a photo gives some information on the character without directly spelling it out. It also adds realism, as smoking is very common habit and many many many people do it. Yes, they are a health risk, but honestly many things are. And a doll with a fakey cig is NOT a health risk. They have no lungs. The cigarettes have no chemicals. There is no smoke. It is a prop. Nothing else. They aren't hurting anyone, and not using them as a prop simply to avoid glamorization is ridiculous if you in fact feel that they should be used. Photography is about expression, as are the dolls themselves. Attacking photos portraying something such as a cigarette or attacking the people behind the camera for using it as a prop is attacking their form of expression.

/end rant

5. As a General statement:
To heck with labeling smoker posts! I agree to a possible 'mature content' general label, but labeling everything specifically because of the potential to offend is ridiculous (and smells of a nanny-state tendency to pad the universe so our precious snowflakes don't get hurt). Some people abhor homosexuality. Or Anthros and furries. Boys in girls clothes. Heck, some people find the concept of drinking cow's milk do be disgusting. You HAVE to encounter and deal with things you may not agree with (It's called 'life') , but that NEVER gives you the right to tell other people how to do it or to see them as lesser creatures for doing it in a way you don't like.
Back on topic in a specific way?
Two of my three boys smoke. Why? Because Ajax is an ex-homeless poet who spends his free time drinking whiskey and Vermin is a total party boy who picked it up in the 80's because he thought it made him look glamorous. I wouldn't have them any other way.

6. I have to say, I partially resent your statement, just because a lot of the people I know smoke.

I don't, but people like my best friend and my mother smoke. So, yeah. I don't see it as completely disgusting, and I think you should be more careful with how you phrase things, so you don't really offend some people.

I've posed my DZ Shoyo with a "cigarette" before, though it wasn't technically a cigarette.

It was a cut piece of insence, and when it was lit, it made my room smell nice and provided the illusion that it was a lit cigarette.

Anyway, I honestly have to say I did it because it was cool, and a test to see if it would work. To my luck, it did.

Anyway, again, I think people do it because it's in the character. It doesn't matter how disgusting it may be to some people, or even if the owner approves or not, if the character is a smoker, there's not much that can be changed, right?

Ne...

7. It's madame ;)

Laoky (thought she had such a girlish avatar )

8. I don’t find it unpleasant in the least to see a doll smoking I find it sexy always have and always will, that’s one reason I started, six flags sexy guy smoking friend offers me a hit and I have been hooked ever since 4 months ago, has to be the stupidest reason for starting smoking, but I have been quit for a while now which is good. Also smoke will yellow resin and if I plan to have the huge resin family that I want I can’t smoke, but some of my boys will be smokers, because like I said I find it sexy, and its part of their personality and as some others have said on here it portrays a certain mood.
Also on a side note I have always found smoking to be a social thing, I never heared it being called an antisocial thing maybe I just don’t pay attention or something

9. Whose to say the doll isn't supposed to be a filthy and disgusting character? Not all characters are good, clean, likeable souls... the world is full of villians, and smoking could be used as a tool to make them LESS likeable, not more so.

I do, however, disagree with your statement that smoking is an antisocial habit. Smoking, unfortunately, is a very SOCIAL habit, I think that's why so many kids, despite knowing the health risks, still pick up a cigarette at all.

I don't smoke, and none of my dolls are characters that smoke, but I'm not going to write someone or their dolls off if they do... and I have found that in some photos on this board, smoking is used as a tool to represent the doll as an evil or bad character, it's part of an accepted and recognized iconography of "bad ass"... and seeing as how dolls have no lungs, using a visual cue like that doesn't bother me at all.

10. The opening post here made me laugh. That whole "I don't like this, it's off putting thing" followed by an extremely off putting statement about smokers. I'm still snickering.

I used to smoke! Like a month ago. I quit because $8.50 a pack is horrid and evil nevermind the $9 I'd have to pay for menthols! I was smoking cloves, as was my boyfriend. The price is evil, its the only reason we stopped. We've had a lot of fun and run into a lot of interesting people because we were out smoking a clove. And they smell so good! We've had a number of people ask what air freshener we used in our cars that smelled so nice and spicy when it was just clove smoke.

Goes to show not all smoke smells like those horrid $2 packs of cigs. Okay I'm a snob, I hate the smell of cheap smoke. Sorry.

Anyways, dolls smoking. It's a sedative, it's one of those lovely affects smoking has, which is why my older girl... When her body gets here (when I can afford it) will end up with some prop cigs. Or cut and lit incense cause that idea is so neat! But yes, it's calming and nice and hence why she'll do it. My girl who'll get here on monday? Probably will on and off. Cause her family does it and she started and likes the sedative effect sometimes.

Calming effect, some people like it. Go figure.

11. I like the idea of the cut and lit incense sticks for photos--I never thought of doing that.

It's kind of funny, all my dolly smokers sit together (it's completely accidental), it's sort of like they have their own little smoking section going on, lol. If only they'd stop losing their cigs under the furniture *sigh*

12. Just so long as they don't accidentally set the house on fire!

13. I personally don't like smoking, because I'm exposed to it all the time among my family. (Seriously...everyone in my family smokes.) However, I find the smell of cigarette smoke oddly comforting, probably for the same reason.

In terms of dolls smoking, I...really don't care. ^^; It's not like they can hurt themselves or anyone else, barring some strange and unfortunate incident which causes a house/forest fire. Alec smokes occasionally - he's mostly quit - and only retreats to the cigs in times of desperation, extreme trauma, or extreme stress. Kitty hates it when he does that, so he tries not to.

I think that artistically it provides anything from an interesting prop to an important plot point; I've used it as the latter while writing (incidentally, something for Alec, which I may put in photo-form later).

14. I really don't like smoking, but have come to accept that lots of people do. No one in my family smokes but my Aunt. I've seen how sick it can make her and the affects it has on her physically. That has turned me away.

I don't have my boy dolls yet but I'll never have them smoke. I see smoking in anime/manga everyday but still don't like it. Even though it wouldn't be real for my doll to smoke, I still won't have them do it. But I have no problems with others doing so. It's their doll and they are free to do whatever they like with them :3

15. Eeew, disgusting and trashy! No to both! XP

16. This.
I could be quite offended by the attitude people have towards smoking here, but if I get annoyed, I'll take it to LJ.

People portray their dolls as having all kinds of habits and tendencies, as Korebeast said, some people find homosexuality or cross dressing "disgusting" but wouldn't dare comment on it here as they know it would be innapropriate.
Again, as mentioned above, life sometimes goes against what you believe, so deal with it.

On topic: My MSD doesn't smoke, but my SD does :)

17. ^ This is exactly along the lines that I was thinking. I don't smoke, and I agree that it's a physically 'nasty' habit and that is precisely why Luce's character smokes. I chose that as a character trait/flaw because he isn't *supposed* to be terribly likable. He's a snarky bad-ass and a little bit anti-social and really rather insufferable. ^^;
I'm not about to make judgement calls based off of weather a person's doll smokes or not. I think, with good calculation, that a bad habit like smoking can make a character more realistic. Just my two cents.

18. Personally, I get nervous and unnaturally agitated around smokers. I hate the smell of it, and I simply don't think it looks cool. However, when I look at some dolls with a cigaretter in their hand, I kind of think it's cool and badass. I guess for one, it's not real smoke and I'm not coughing up my lungs from the fumes. Another thing, I guess it doesn't look as scary (for me) when real people do it. Same thing with movies. It looks cool when they do it on the big screen, not in real life.

19. I know what you mean about it being oddly comforting. Both of my parents smoke, and although when they're actively smoking I can't stand the smell, I find it comforting to hug them and smell the cigarette odor on them xD

Anyways, back on topic. My boy Nyxem smokes because it's the common thing to do where he hangs out. In the back of a store, playing a game of poker with a thick air of tobacco overhead is what Nyxem thrives in. Thats just the kind of guy he is.

20. I don't smoke and I never will, as it is I got really bad asthma from the smoking my dad did in the past. But I don't see smoking as a anti-social thing. If anything, my dad is a very social person. And he just happened to smoke because it was a "man" thing all Korean males did back in his day. And I honestly think that without a stress-reliever of some sort during his times of incredible stress and depression, he wouldn't be here with us today. So I'm even a bit grateful to that habit he had and see me and my brother's asthma as a price for him still being here. And as a bonus, it made a good memory for us of how he constantly raided all the candy in our house in order to stop smoking for our sake. And I believe that just because he smoked, it doesn't make him a bad guy. In fact, I find it especially incredible how he stopped like that after some 30+ odd years of smoking. No medication; just about 1000 tootsie rolls. xD
As for our little resin friends, I don't mind when I see them smoking because it doesn't do any harm to them or to the people around them. But does that mean I like to smell people smoking in real life? Nope. If I don't want to find myself keeled over on some pavement I always get away about a good 50 foot radius from it all. :)
And as for overexposure, I think that the easily influenced would pick up the habit from friends and family rather than doll smoking pictures. I think that this is a minor influence compared to the connections and pressures people have in real life.

My 2 cents. :]
